Legs by Steven Polansky was an interesting lens into the relationship held by fathers and sons. While the story uses the traditional relationship between a confused father and an angry son it also juxtaposes the relationship held between the father’s relationship with his son and the father’s relationship with God. While David, the father, cannot seem to connect to his son Randy, he does connect with God. I found this juxtaposition to mirror common faith vs family relationships in media where a parent connects heavily with a faith in God but struggles with or harms their family. I enjoyed how Legs took a different route and had a father who was trying to connect with their child. David was not distant but more so lost in how to communicate

As Bethany underwent emergency surgery, she fell in and out of consciousness (18). The doctors had to stitch the wound to seal it up (19), and Bethany had to stay in the hospital for a week (29).

Thats when she made a promise to be on a surfboard by Thanksgiving Day.

She was attacked on her surfer board out in Hawaii where the tiger shark left a big chuck bit in her board.

On the morning of October 31, 2003, Bethany went out to surf at Tunnels Beach in Ha'ena with her best friend, Alana Blanchard, and Blanchard's father and brother. While lying on her board,she suddenly felt intense pressure on her left arm and was pulled back and forth for a few seconds. Originally feeling no pain, she noticed the water around her had turned red, and her friends realized that her left arm had been bitten off nearly to the shoulder. The process of healing after that was challenging and hard for her, but she overcame it with her faith in God and hard work.
