Part 1: Favorite leisure period: My favorite period about leisure development in Western Civilization is the Playground Movement, due to the fact that churches rediscovered the value of recreational activities for kids outside of their homes. (Dimension of Leisure for Life, page 127). As described in out textbook, both parents were working from full-time to eighteen hours day and their children were wondering around without sense; for sure they were learning bad habits and being in contact with people older than their ages. This period appeals to me, because my nuclear family directly benefitted, by having access to neighborhood playgrounds. My parents, and later myself clearly recall how much they enjoyed going as a family to community playgrounds. Soon enough, people came around selling some food, little gifts, water and soda pop, which children enjoyed with their families. I like this period, because it brought families closer. Families in our neighborhood also began to have picnics and extended families gatherings. Moreover, children enjoyed their weekends breathing fresh air, playing games, and …show more content…
Here in Santa Clarita Valley, we are lucky to possess excellent community parks, walking corridors, theaters, cinemas, Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor, seasonal recreational programs, hiking and riding horses’ schools, ice skating rings, and am amply spectrum of cultural events in city parks and College of the Canyons. Fortunately, their ticketing and parking fees are affordable for local citizens and visitors. Moreover, protecting our wildlife is essential. With this purpose the city recycles 93% of all construction debris and trash from our local river, and spending thousands to provide a green lighting service. The environment protection, it is truly a first priority for our local government. Therefore, Santa Clarita is offering excellent leisure and recreational services for
Kids on my block always loved to play outside. Growing up we always knew each other. We cherished the times we would spend with each other. Whether it being on the Scorching hot days of Summer, the chilly days of Fall, Or the rainy days of Spring. We would be on that street hanging out and spend time with each other.
Colonial Recreation and Leisure: How did changing Anglo-American attitudes about work, labor, and leisure in the 1600s and 1700s shape the recreational practices of colonial America? What does Nancy Struna mean by the “leisure
Leisure at the turn of the twentieth century was a new found type of freedom and entertainment, not only for the children, but for the entire family. It was a way for numerous families to spend quality time together but in a more modern and convenient way. Entertainment before the twentieth century consisted of household entertainment, such as board games, and “backyard games” like tennis, and football amongst others. When compared to leisure in the twentieth century, many of these activities were seen as “outdated”, as more and more people started to adopt the new ways of entertainment. Some examples were the openings of catalogs, sports, cinemas, amusement parks.

When we observe the demographics of today¡¦s society, we notice that there is quite a change in the average age, as well as life expectancy. In 1993, the average life expectancy rose to an amazing 75.5 years, with women living an average of 79 years and men living an average of 72 years (Hawkins, 1996, p. 4). With this gradual rise in age, the idea of therapeutic recreation for the aging population has taken on a significant role. Therapeutic recreation uses recreation and leisure activities to meet the needs of people in order to improve their quality of life. These needs include social, physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual. The experience of engaging in recreation is perceived to have therapeutic benefits. Engaging in
Environmentalism has always been two sided. Nature versus urban. locals versus national. Frequently, large tracts of public and federal land are bought and developed by industry. Pristine wilderness turned to bustling epicenters of human activity, all in the name of progress and economic growth. This tale of preserving natural wilderness is one that begins with John Muir, an advocate against the taming of Yosemite national park and the Hetch-Hetchy reservoir, while the head of the US Forest Service, Gifford Pinchot, insisted on the reservoir to supply the city of San Francisco with water. This timeless epic of conservation or preservation brings us to the Jumbo Valley, a vast expanse of uninhabited, pristine wilderness home to diverse
1984, a book written by George Orwell provides an inside look to the future of a perfect totalitarian society. In this picture-perfect society Big Brother is the face of the Party. To the citizens of Oceania he is the leader of the nation and the head of the political group. When it comes to a successful leader, his regime is a strong structure that wins the approval of the nation. Big Brother is a great example in this case as he is almost spoken of as a god. As well as Big Brother, Infamous Iraq leader Saddam Hussein was another high-powered head. Hussein also constructed a strong regime that was fairly similar to Big Brothers. The key connections these two individuals have in their regimes are their methods of control. These methods consist
It seems the storeroom has two brands of Propofol, but we can only accept the brand name Propofol from the store, this is because generic Propofol contains bisulfite. If any issues, you can always call Liz or Allison.
Almost everyone has some kind of leisure time whether it is a couple hours or a couple days. What varies is the type of recreational activities people choose to do during that time. Although leisure and recreation is chosen based on ones unique individual interests, there are many sociocultural factors that influence the type of recreational activities we do, when we do it and how often we do it. These factors include political,
When I was child growing up in the 70’s children played football in the streets or went bike riding, played freeze tag, and hide and seek. Children did not sit at home. Kids were encouraged to go out and play with their friends. Boys and girls would gather in groups and stay out and play for hours until they got thirsty or hungry before they would come home.
Both Play and Leisure are vital components of a child's life as a range of stimulating play and leisure opportunities will support the physical emotional sensory and spiritual and intellectual growth of the child. It helps them to form and sustain relationships and also improves communication, educational development and achievement.
When most think of philosophy a list of people come to mind. You have your “greats” such as Plato, Nietzsche, and of course Aristotle. However, this does not mean that their ideas cannot be challenged and questioned, as no one is above criticism. Aristotelian Virtue Ethics have a major flaw that strikes at the heart of the idea. There is a severe lack of guidance both in what a virtue is, and what happens when they conflict. The mains question is, is one virtue more important than another?
Overall, I would like to say that most of the points mentioned by the writer in the essay were valid but I must add that some balance must be found between leisure and education, even if it is the summer. The world is not what it used to be and the people have to adapt likewise in order to live up to the expectations
My family invested in antique farming equipment and bought multiple tractors. We got involved in the Little Log House Pioneer Village, which is a three-day-event of tractor parades and flea markets.Eventually my family started hosting a hay ride party for my Mom’s co-workers.We wanted to share how we live in country and show off how beautiful it is outside of the city.
At the beginning of this course leisure was a topic I did not give much thought to and I felt like I did not have the time to spare to put much thought into. To me, all leisure meant was having free time to do whatever it is that I wanted to do. But after analyzing my life I noticed that I had surrounded my life with solely work and school and my “free time” was anytime I spent watching television and anytime I slept. However, after taking this course I learned that leisure meant more much than that. Now leisure to me means, as Richard Kraus states, leisure is “time which is not devoted to work or work-connected responsibilities or to other forms of discretionary or unobligated time,” (Olson et al., 2003, 12). The “time” in which Kraus
