A famous poet named Henry David Thoreau once said, “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” Moreover, this quote speaks very strongly to me in a sense of having freedom and using it in a term of moving, “confidently in the direction of his [your] dreams.” It is saying that you should always go for your dreams and not have any doubts with yourself, because the life you dreamed of might be easier to get to than originally intended. If you have the courage and passion to strive for success, you may be met with an even greater surprise. I agree with this idea because it is idealistic to life, as you must have the confidence …show more content…
Overmore, Lennie and George have high hopes of owning a farm and land, where they would tend rabbits. It is very important to both men, because it represents their independence and freedom, as they do not enjoy being migrant workers. Each men share the same hope, but look at it completely differently. For Lennie, this immediately translates into “tending the rabbits” and for George this means “owning a piece of land” and controlling it themselves. This provides their motivation and helps them endure their struggles. For example, while taking a break from walking, Lennie asks George why they are working and saving money, “Guys like us got nothing; they work up a stack and blow it in the town. But we’re different, we got a future.” (Steinbeck 14). Most workers live on a day by day basis without ever having or reaching a goal. However, Lennie and George actually had a dream to hope and live for. This dream they depended on as motivation to live and work on. However, Lennie keeps repeating this dream saying, “George, how long’s it gonna be till we get that little place an’ live on the fatta the land and the rabbits” (Steinbeck 56). Each time they speak about it, it motivates them to keep pursuing and pushing to reach their goals. Moreover, their dream also keeps them together, so they are able to accomplish their dream. The dream is a good thing, because without it George and Lennie would be way different than what they are now. For example, George would be similar to all the other workers, spending his money as it piles in. Unfortunately, Lennie might be in jail for rape or some other heinous crime, but might also get bullied by other workers without George by his side. They work like a team and together they look out and care for eachother. In conclusion, George and Lennie’s dream of owning a farm helps them in good ways as it motivates them to save money and
George and Lennie believe they can achieve their American dream because “‘I [George] got you [Lennie] to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.’” (Steinbeck 14). They feel like they can rely on each other and their friendship and loyalty prevent them from isolating themselves. Their presence on that ranch even changed the people around them because they were accepting of the outcasts. Crooks, Candy, and Curley’s wife all open up to them about the isolation and loneliness they feel. Candy asks George if he can join them on their dream of owning their own property. George says he will consider it but eventually denies the offer when the body of Curley's wife is found, because he realizes the dream of owning a farm with Lennie is dead. As Peter Lisca states in his article, “On Of Mice and Men” from The American Dream, “The dream of the farm originates with Lennie and it is only through Lennie, who also makes the dream impossible, that the dream has any meaning for George.” While it is clear that Lennie needs George, George needs Lennie too. Without Lennie, George loses his sense of purpose and is likely to isolate himself like all the other ranchers. The strong bond between the two of them serve to contrast the economic and social conditions at the
George and Lennie have been dreaming of owning their own farm. That way they don't have to work for other people. They've moved around a lot trying to find a good place to own, but their past is holding them back. This is a limitation in their life. They can't own a farm because they can't get the money because they can't ever stay at the same farm for a long time.
In this book Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is about George and lennie's relationship is marked by the same goal. For example, George wants to have a future together and work together as a team. And in this quote “O.K. Someday- we're gonna get the jack together and we're gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an' a cow and some pigs”. This quote tells us that once they start working they will have these dreams and make it come true and they want to live together since they have a strong bond that will make them succeed. For example when they had many thoughts about having a future and move on with their life and forget about the horrible times in their life which talks about it in this quote "With us it ain't like that. We got a future. We
Owning a farm where you can “live offa the fatta the lan’” is George and Lennie’s dream (57). Where they can have crops,“a little house. . . a room to ourself[themselves]”,and of course animals especially rabbits (58). The farm for George will be a place he can be independent while still taking care of Lennie, he can be his own boss in a place of security and comfort. The farm for Lennie would be a sanctuary from a world that does not understand him. There would be a responsibility for him to tend the rabbits, the attribute of the farm that excites him most, while still being with George.
To become successful you must overcome to obstacles, and continue to work hard even when giving up seems to be an easier solution. Lennie and George are two migrant workers who dream of owning a ranch some day. They are now going to go work at a new ranch in Soledad,California. Escaping from the weed, thanks to Lennie’s childlike behavior for soft items. Hoping this time George and Lennie will get enough money to buy a ranch. John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men effectively uses the literary devices of conflict, foreshadowing and symbolism in an attempt to reveal how some dreams that will not come true,no matter how much hard work and effort is put into it and is easier if you just give up.
In the novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, people are portrayed to not work hard enough to achieve long-term goals or dreams that they have set for themselves. This idea is shown multiple times throughout the story. It starts with Lennie and George wanting to purchase their own farm, to do this they will need to make enough money to get the farm started. They show no effort to make progress on this dream of theirs, they spend all the money they make on women and beer. Lennie’s dream is to tend to and take care of the rabbits on the farm they hope to one day own, his problem is that he has a problem with animals. When Lennie pets an animal he usually ends up killing it, and he makes no effort to show a little more care for the poor
In this novel, George and Lennie have the dream to purchase a small farm and farm the land themselves. In contrast to most dreams, their dream is very modest and achievable. Their dream is realistic because their friendship has been established through years of togetherness and the basic needs of both the characters (Scott, 1985, p. 39). George and Lennie are dependant on each other. Through Lennie, George can feel superior and justify his own failures. Through George, Lennie is provided with direction in life. Lennie is protected from himself by George. But, the most prominent reason their dream is realistic is that the farm is in actual existence and George has a vivid picture of it in his mind (Scott, 1985, p. 43). Sadly, regardless of the realism of their goal, inevitable destruction must occur. Although it is beyond his control, Lennie’s circumstances are what destroys the dream. Steinbeck creates Lennie to exist in a society where he is rejected because of his constant conflict with others. According to Brenda Foster Scott in John Steinbeck's Concept of the Individualistic Survival of the American Dream, “such characters are destined for failure not only because of a non-teleological view which pits them against a world which lies beyond any distinctions of that which is moral or immoral, but also against a society which cannot tolerate their inabilities to
“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place. . . . With us it ain’t like that” (Steinbeck, 15). As we follow Lennie and George on their journey towards what they consider to be the dream life, the audience comes to learn along with the characters that dreams are not all they’re cracked up to be and sometimes the most rewarding goal in life is one which has already been achieved. The two main characters in the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck are poor farm workers who hope to one day own their own farm and become self-sufficient. What they never realize is that the most important thing they can ever have is each other. Despite their periodic quarrels, Lennie
Throughout the entire book, Lennie shows how the idea that owning land gives hope. Lennie is a hard worker but only has one goal in mind that is made evident throughout the book. Lennie only wants to be able to “tend the rabbits”(pg 14). Without this idea Lennie would not work or not want to work
Lennie and George’s dream is to own a piece of land to work and live where they can have cows, pigs, chicken a vegetable patch with alfalfa and rabbits. “O.K Someday – we’re going
