Throughout the Renaissance, there was an rise of new attitudes, ideas, and especially art work. Leonardo Da Vinci was a main figure in these new ideas and paintings during this period in time.
"The Last Supper," by Leonardo Da Vinci is a fresco painting, suggesting that it is directly painted on a wall. The "Last Supper" is fascinating to me in several ways. Maybe because I am Catholic and being familiar with it by hanging in our dining area at home. Most of my friends and acquaintances have a picture of it in their home.
Throughout history, many works of art are both created and damaged, and it is only the authentic works of art that people place to memory and embrace on to for years following their making. The Last Supper is one of these

From what I have learned he is one of the most gifted, artist, painter and architect of all time. He was born on April 15, 1452, in the town of Vinci. According to records, he started the painting in 1495 for his patron Duke Ludovico Sforza. The Last Supper was painted in the of the Dominican Church of S. Maria delle Grazie in Milan, and was predestined to be a symbol of religious devotion. Some people say that the painting took more than ten years to finish, and yet others say it was finished in two years. It's very important to know that if it was finished in two years, it was quite an accomplishment for Da Vinci, who had a bad habit of procrastinating his work, and even left some of his works …show more content…
Nonetheless, it is not a real fresco because it was painted on dry plaster rather than wet plaster. He wanted to make the painting as detailed as possible, because he wanted to show human feeling and appearance on the character's faces. Before starting the painting, Da Vinci covered the wall with a resin coating, which is a mixture of pitch and mastic. In addition, he utilized chalk in the process of coating. To outline the painting he used tempra which allowed him to highlight the details of human emotions. Unfortunately, the substance proved unsuccessful, and by 1517 the piece began to deteriorate. By 1556, the painting was regarded as ruined and unrecognizable. The painting has kept on decaying in the following centuries. In fact, it was so unrecognizable because of the damage made by sloppy artists who tried to restore the painting and by the adding of an entrance way put in the lower part of the painting. It took many years of restoration to have the painting look as it was originally painted. The last and most successful restoration of the Last Supper painting occurred from 1978 to 1999. The dining room of the convent was cordoned off and the temperature settings inside the room were kept under control for restoration work. The Last Supper painting has been considerably rejuvenated due to the latest
Leonardo da Vinci was known for a number of famous paintings. “The Last Supper” is one of the most famous paintings in the world, and is by far my favorite artwork created by Leonardo da Vinci. Mr. da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in the town of Anchiano, Italy. His parents named him Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci. In 1495, At the age of forty three, Leonardo began working on “The Last Supper” mural and continued working on the masterpiece till February 9, 1498 says khanacademy.org. The painting is located in the back of the dining hall at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. The mural is a rather large fresco style painting, measuring in size of 181 inches by 346 inches. On May 2, 1519 Leonardo da Vinci died the age of 67 in Clos Luce, France. I have decided to analyze this wonderful piece of art, because of my love for Jesus Christ. The Last Supper draws my attention, because it gives me a visual of the last supper Jesus Christ had with his disciples, that we read about in the Holy Bible.

The Last supper represents the first celebration of this sacrifice that is now a key part to every mass. That is why it was so important to show Jesus twice in these paintings.
In the visual arts, composition is the way to build a work to communicate the intent of the art in the brightest and most persuasive way. The most important thing in composition is the creation of the artistic image. The Last Supper’s composition is very ingenious. Sebastiano arranges the disciples into groups of three, each side of Jesus has two groups. All lines and gestures are centered toward Jesus. From one group to the other, the artist makes an effort to connect with one another in a very natural way; the example of the guy stands on the opposite side of the table on Jesus’s right is putting his hand on the guy’s shoulder that sits next to him to connect the two right-wing groups, and between the two groups on the left, they were making eye contacts.
An early example of fantastic renaissance and one of the world’s most recognizable paintings, as considered to many all over the world, is Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper, which is an iconic and powerful work of art. Finished in 1494, it has stood the test the time and you can go see this painting currently in Milan, Italy at the Santa Maria delle Grazie. In order to paint it, Leonardo used an oil/tempera mix and applied it to a dry wall. “He did this because he wanted to capture the look of an oil painting, but even within his lifetime it began to wear off. Further destruction was caused in the seventeenth century, when a door was cut into the bottom,” according to Italianrenaissance.org. As it stands today, this masterpiece is currently 523 years old which is impressive due to the fact that it has been through so many tragic events, such as countless wars and occupations of different countries. Natural disasters could have also easily destroyed it as well like countless other paintings last throughout time.

I have been greatly impacted by all of the artists, styles, and types of art we have talked about so far in Art History I. We have looked at sculptors, paintings, architecture, and prints with varying styles, from a numerous amount of artists. While I am intrigued by mostly all of what we have studied, The Last Supper paintings catch my eye the most. Many artists have successfully completed paintings of The Last Supper including, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, and Leonardo da Vinci; however, da Vinci was the first, original painter of The Last Supper. My favorite Last Supper painting definitely has to be the one by Tintoretto. Tintoretto’s Last Supper painting truly represents various key aspects of art; from the usage of colors and shadows, all the way to the numerous groups of people taking on various different tasks.
The Last Supper by Leonardo is very different to Tintoretto’s representation of the same incident. The last supper is one of the most important occurrences which took place in the Christian religion such an important event that many have seen the need for the event visually recorded through art the two most famous of these representations are by far Tintoretto’s and Leonardo’s works. The Last Supper by Leonardo was created during the renaissance period and is a simple symbolic work with little emotion. Tintoretto however chose to represent the event in a surrealistic manner to give full impact; A way in which was typical of the art period in which he painted the work, the
Leonardo's "Last Supper" is a priceless piece of art with much hidden meaning and obvious talents bestowed upon a wall. Under the study of Verrocchio as a painter and a sculptor, he was able to use his skills in creating a very detailed and a very naturalistic piece of work that would be remembered for hundreds of years. He was also able to create characters with amazing individuality. Not only was his portrayal of the characters magnificent, but the symbolism he used which emphasized the story being told in the "Last Supper".
Comparatively, Andrea del Castagno’s Last Supper is early Renaissance completed far in advance of Da Vinci’s rendition. As one of four works commissioned by the Medici family, this mural rests inside the refectory of a former convent Cenacolo de Sant’Apollonia (Kren & Marx, n.d.; Editors Encyclopedia Britannica, 2013). The stone wall assists in dividing the expressions of the disciples in two’s following the news of betrayal (Adams, p.126; Editors Encyclopedia Britannica, 2012). Castagno’s mural is complete with his own view of linear perspective, utilizing the architectural details for movement (Editors Encyclopedia Britannica, 2013; Kren & Marx, n.d). The viewer can see Masaccio’s influence of “pictorial illusion” in the composition in addition to the bright disk like halos seen in his other works (Editors Encyclopedia Britannica, 2013; Kren & Marx, n.d.). Each of the figures in this composition takes up its own space, with the exception of Christ who much like Da Vinci, uses him as the anchor completing the perspective. The space on either of Christ side makes for a dramatic effect, while the lines, tiles and artistic detail frame the scene. Each individual in the mural occupies its own space, unlike that of Da Vinci who incorporated the overlap of the figures gestures for dramatic effect and movement (Last Supper, 2017). The overall composition is balanced, Castagno’s placement of each individual on the opposite side of the table across from Christ completes the geometric triangle seen in early Renaissance works (Editors Encyclopedia Britannica,
Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” was painted during his time in Milan, which was from about 1495 to 1498. “The Last Supper” is a tempera and oil mural on plaster. He created this painting for the refectory of the city’s Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Also known as “The Cenacle,” this painting is about fifteen by twenty nine feet and is the artist’s only surviving fresco. The painting depicts the Passover dinner, in which Jesus Christ addresses the Apostles and says, “One of you shall betray me.” One of the painting’s most vivid features in the painting is each Apostle’s distinct emotive expression and body language. When the French in 1499 (invaded Milan) and the Sforza family fled, da Vinci also escaped. He was possibly the first to Venice and then to Florence.
The Purpose of the paintings of the “Last Supper,” by Ugolino di Nerio and Leonardo da Vinci, were to portray the betrayal of Jesus Christ by of one the twelve apostles, as they are having the last meal. Jesus Christ mentions to his apostles that there is going to be a betrayal amongst them. All twelve apostles had mixed feelings of anger, fear, and surprised. Later on, it turns out that Judas, one of the twelve apostles, had told the authorities about Jesus so he can be arrested then later crucified. The paintings show a dramatic scene after the claim by Jesus Christ. The paintings give us insight to get the reader interested in the painting of “The Last Supper,” how the cultures that produced those paintings change the way we paint today, and how both paintings influenced the Renaissance era.

This is most likely an exaggeration. On close exam, the show tells about a decent arrangement that has been painted or touched up finished the gum based paint the utilization of the new strategy for oil paint, the wide perspective of a nature scene, the stones that might be seen through the dark colored mountain stream and a significant part of the observing of Jesus demonstrating the veracity of the hand of Leonardo. Leonardo himself can likewise have been the form for 2 works by Verrocchio, which incorporate the bronze statue of David inside the Bargello and the Most elevated amount holy messenger Michael in Tobias and the Heavenly attendant. By the age of twenty, Leonardo confirmed as an ace inside the association of individuals of St Luke, the craftsmen and specialists of prescription, yet even after his dad set him up in his own workshop, his connection to Verrocchio turned out to be to such an extent that he kept on cooperating with him. Leonardo's soonest perceived dated depictions is an attracting pen and ink of the Arno valley, drawn on August 5,1473.
