In February 1950, Fujita left Japan and travelled to Paris. After acquiring the French citizenship, he discarded his Japanese citizenship 5 years later. In 1959, he was baptized after converting to Catholicism and changed his name to Léonard-Foujita in respect to Leonardo da Vinci. Years later, Foujita began to passionately draw paintings of children, women and paintings related to religion.
