I have chosen Lepus (The hare), for my constellation because it is one of the lesser known constellations, and I have taken a liking to doing things most people don't do. Lepus belongs to the Orion family (of constellations), along with Canis Major, Canis Minor, Orion, and Monoceros. Lepus, in size, is the 51st constellation, occupying an area of 290 square degrees. It is located in NQ2 (the second quadrant of the northern hemisphere) It is closest to the constellations Canis Major, Monoceros, Caelum, Columba, and Orion. One story says that Lepus was once a bird who was transformed into a hare by Ostara, the Goddess of Spring, once a year the hare was permitted to lay eggs, the day was March 27, also known as Easter. This is the origin
Systematic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, systemic, autoimmune disease. This condition causes the body to mistaken its own tissues and organs as foreign bodies and begins attacking them causing continuing inflammation and pain. (Huether & McCance, 2012) The cause of SLE still remains unknown, but it is possible that is inherited as a complex trait or caused by environmental stimuli. (S) Anyone is at risk for Lupus, but is more common among women than men and is more prevalent of African Americans and Asians. (National Library of Medicine 2010, para 2) This condition can be difficult to diagnose, as a patient must present a number of the recognizable symptoms. Depending on the location that Lupus presents itself in the body, the symptoms
Lupus is a disease that afflicts an estimated two million Americans and over five million persons throughout the world. Its symptoms are widely vary, often masking themselves as other ailments which make it difficult to diagnose. However, with more people aware of what Lupus is and how it can properly be treated and managed, it is very possible for a person with Lupus to live a normal, active, and healthy life.
I have chosen the Perseus Constellation. I chose that contallation because I have always liked the Greek Gods mythology. Perseus, named after the Greek Mythology hero, is a constellation in the Northen Sky. Perseus is bordered by Aries and Taurus to the south, Auriga to the east, Camelopardalis and Cassiopeia to the north, and Andromeda and Triangulum the west.
Lupus is an autoimmune inflammatory that occurs mostly in women. Lupus causes joint pain, multiple red lesions on the body. With time disorder can progress into a life-threatening issues involving the heart, kidneys, lungs and other vital organs. Lupus is disease in which the immune system fights against the body. The immune system is designed to fight against unwanted organisms and bacteria but does not attack its own body tissues. Lupus is a genetic disease that is inherited. There is no cause of the disease but is linked to genes and chromosomes. The disease can be triggered due to environmental factors. Such as: smoking, stress, infection, medication, antibiotics and much more. Lupus is hard to diagnose until there is damage to the
Lupus is still somewhat of a mystery to physicians and scientists today. Historically, the disease has stumped medical professionals. The first known discovery and identification of lupus, specifically systemic lupus erythematosus, was made by Hippocrates, a Greek physician, around the time of 400 BC. The disease became more well known after many years, and by the late 1700’s, two British dermatologists Robert Willan and Thomas Bateman had started to “use the term “lupus” to describe a destructive skin disease preferentially affecting the face and the nose” (Konya, 2016). Then the modern era of lupus began in 1923, when one doctor discovered four cases with similar symptoms. The physical details of the disease became more specific and by 1967, doctors were able to find a way to test for the antibodies that were associated with the disease. In the past, people thought the symptoms of lupus resembled a wolf bite, and some theorized the skin swelling and color changing was caused by werewolves. This theory has since been proven wrong, clearly. Because of this theory though, some people with the disease may have been wrongfully mistreated in the past. Today, lupus is a disease that allows people to receive help from the government under disability status. People with Lupus are not mistreated and in most places, are even protected by disability discrimination acts.
Cassiopeia is the constellation I have chosen. It is a very interesting constellation, comprised of various stars named with a Greek letter followed by Cassiopeiae (e.g. Alpha Cassiopeiae). The stars also have various traditional names of other origin, for instance Alpha is traditionally called Shedir from Arabic. I chose the constellation partly because I like the name, but it also has interesting origins and I am glad I looked up more details about it.
My favourite constellation is Orion (the hunter). I chose this constellation because I am very interested in Greek mythology (which is where the story of this constellation comes from), and I often see this constellation in the night sky. Orion can be found throughout the world and is on the celestial equator. It is one of the most well-known constellations in the sky. Orion is most clearly visible from February to November. This constellation is comprised mainly of 7 stars - three make up Orion's belt, two make up his feet, and two make up his shoulders. Alnilam, Mintaka and Alnitak are the three stars in Orion's belt, Betelgeuse is his right shoulder, Bellatrix is his left shoulder, Rigel is his left foot and Saiph is his right foot.
According to the Lupus Foundation of America (2015), the history of Lupus as an acknowledged disease can be divided into three time periods: the classical, neoclassical, and the modern periods. The Classical Period has been traced back as early as 1200 A.D and extended through the mid 1800’s. It is largely characterized by the development of physical descriptions of Lupus as it manifested in patients. In the context of the disease, the word “lupus” was first used in the thirteenth century by a doctor by the name of Rogerius as a way to describe the lesions he found on people’s skin (Lahita, 2010). “Lupus” is the latin word for wolf, as wolf bites were the best comparison to the lesions at the time.
Canis Major is my favorite constellation because I love dogs. I have currently have three Labrador Retrievers. Canis Major means "Greater Dog" in Latin. He is often represented with Canis Minor (Lesser Dog) and both are following Orion (The Hunter). Canis Major is located in the southern celestial hemisphere.
Orion, also called The Hunter is my favorite constellation because it is perhaps the most prominent and well-known constellation, anywhere in the world, because its stars are so bright that it is possible to observe with the naked eye. Orion is located near the constellation Eridanus River and supported by his two hunting dogs Canis Major and Canis Minor fighting constellation Taurus.
Lupus Disease Lupus is a disease that could infect any part of the human body. The Lupus disease infects mostly women when they are young in the childbearing age. On the other hand children and even males could develop the disease; also the lupus disease is diverse to mostly the ages of 15-44. Researchers believe that a virus or possibly a chemical was encountered by a susceptible individual that was vulnerable to trigger the disease. Although, the researcher’s hypothesis haven't been proven yet, they are still trying to find evidence that could support their claim on the virus. While in the environment, the trigger to the lupus virus is still unknown. The history of the lupus disease occurred around the classical period, and was reviewed by
My favorite constellation would be the Cassiopeia. It is one of the most recognizable constellations in the northern sky during night time in fall and early winter. It has a W shape formed by five bright stars. It is part of the 48 constellations written in Ptolemy's work in the 2nd-century and still part of the 88 modern constellations today.
Treatment is vital toward helping lupus patients expand their life span, but there are many issues regarding medical treatment. Trethewey (2004) discussed that due to the level of difficulty with developing effective lupus specific treatments because of the mechanisms that normally prevent the immune system from attacking an individual’s own body are defective; there are general treatment options. The general treatment options are dependent on the individual’s signs and symptoms and severity. According to Lupus Foundation Of America (2013), the general treatment options that are available for individuals with lupus are Anti-Inflammatories (reduces inflammation and pain), Corticosteroids (act as naturally occurring hormones), Antimalarials (mainly used for skin rashes, mouth
Perhaps my favorite constellation is Lepus, ‘the Hare’. I like the association of Lepus, the hare, with the lunar mythology of China, especially the relationship with the moon rabbit. There is also something haunting about the eternal hunt, the chase that is etched upon the stars of Lepus, the hunter Orion, and his dogs in Greek mythology. Lepus does not represent any major figure in Greek Mythology but it was one of the 48 constellations listed by the ancient astronomer Ptolemy. Today it remains as one of the modern constellations.
The constellation I have chosen is Cancer. I chose this constellation because it is my zodiac sign. Naturally, I found it interesting to learn about and write an essay on my discovery and creation theory. Cancer is Latin for "Crab", The name was chosen because the representation of the the constellation is in fact a crab. The constellation is 506 sq. degrees and made up of faint stars.
