“There is scarcely anything else in the world but that: to love one another” (Victor Hugo, Les Miserables). Les Miserables at its core is a story of love, compassion, and having hope within our darkest moments and that there is always redemption in forgiveness. The story lacks the softness one thinks of with those words and is told in a dark, gritty, and sometimes heartbreaking way. The Sands Theater Center recently ran a production of Les Miserables to be performed at the Athens Theatre in Deland, FL. I had the pleasure of being an audience member in a performance performed on Saturday April 23, 2014 at the 7:30 showing. The production value from the Sands Theater Company and the overall experience of seeing Les Miserables live in theatre combines into a can’t miss experience. The Sands Theater Company takes all aspects of art and combines them in a beautiful symphony. The show is a must see performance with the strongest elements of the production being the actor’s individual performances, the sets and scenery creating the backdrop for play, and the lighting adding visual support to the overall production. To begin with just as an audience member partaking in a theatre performance the performers on stage are the first aspect you observe. To illustrate, it is generally the actors in the spotlight and it is their job to convey to the audience the characters and their story being told.
