Lesia’s Dream “Lesia’s Dream” is the story of Lesia Magus, a girl who struggles to stand strong even though nobody accepts her in the new country she immigrates to. This story begins in the spring of 1914. “Lesia’s Dream” by Laura Langston begins when the Magus family, which consists of Lesia, Papa, Mama, Ivan, Sonia, and later on, Adam, decide to immigrate to Manitoba, Canada from Ukraine. They bought some 160 acres of scrub woodland for ten dollars Canadian. This was Lesia and Ivan’s idea. They arrived on a boat ride that was very dreadful; many people died. The Magus’ idea of Canada was that it would be alluring and welcoming. Their nickname for it was “the land of milk and honey.” When they arrive, they are expected to live in a drafty, …show more content…
He is like Lesia; a hard worker and a proud person all together. He is handsome, tall, with dark hair and big muscles. He is Lesia’s older brother and he helped her decide to go to Canada. He is determined and goes to jail for trying to get into the army (when he is an enemy of the state) later in the story. Another minor character in the story is Andrew. He is 20 years old and he proposed to Lesia by the end of the book. He is handsome, stubborn, caring, and Ukrainian. He has a sizable farm and his wife died before the story started. Andrew Korol has many animals on his farm; they have a comfortable house as well. Andrew and Lesia have five children. An invigorating event in the story is when Lesia saves Amy Scott, who is the daughter of Jack Scott, a store owner. Lesia is selling her butter from the cow Faith (who has a mashed-up face), eggs, milk, and woven belts when she sees a girl chasing a butterfly. She looks like she will tumble into the river. When the little girl falls into the river, Lesia runs to save her from the current. Jack Scott is not too thankful but this event helps Lesia sell the butter and bread from Minnie. The story concludes when Lesia is talking to her daughter about her life. Lesia, the main character, got married to Andrew Korol and they had five children: a daughter, Laisha, and four
Ukrainians started to relocate to Canada during “The War of 1812” due to the political and economic instability of their home country, however, the first and largest major immigration took place from 1889 to 1914. The latecomers were forced to settle in Southern Canada and become wage workers. Ukrainians were categorically attracted to Canada because of the “National Policy” of the CPR, specifically the “Settlement of the West”. They were offered costless land by Sir John A. Macdonald to populate Western Canada, however, they weren’t aware of the fact that they wouldn’t receive anything but the farmland or that the land that they would receive was in the desolate prairies. Most Ukrainian Canadians were compelled to start a farm and manually
He is looked upon in a heroic way for fighting the justice system and showing courage, strength and ability to resist laws through making his own lifestyle, with separate beliefs, attitudes and values. He was a friend of the poor, kind to women and children, and an enemy of the rich. He was forced into crime by the harsh harassments of the authorities. He said to have died bravely against the more powerful forces of the law. He has grown to be an admired infamous figure for the way he stood up to authority and his larrikin ways.
For instance, it is apparent throughout the novel that he is brilliant, inquisitive, and, self-governing. However, just as though he had an ever growing mind, he also was afflicted with a somewhat egocentric, yet lion-hearted attitude. Of course, all characteristics that do not blend well with the glorification of the state over an individual are not at all welcome in Equality 7-2521’s city, and therefore make him a rather formidable threat. Much like the rest of his peers, he is restricted to what the Council of Vocations declares him capable of managing –in this case, a Street Sweeper. As long as he could remember, his desire to be free to study alongside “The Council of Scholars” had kept him up at night, yet his previous vocation prohibited that. The stubborn and passionate boy defied society’s norms and escaped after being discovered of his transgressions. Without any care in the world apart from his love for “The Golden One” and his recently invented lightbulb of sorts, he rushed into the Uncharted Forest with a realization of his
The 1930’s was a decade of hardship and despair in Canada. It was truly a terrible time, as the economy crashed, many people lost their jobs, and poverty rates skyrocketed. Many people couldn’t afford basic needs like food water, and shelter.
This self-description of the narrator says it all. He gives a brutal, yet inflated description of himself and his friends that gives the reader a very round main character.
Characteristics and significance – He is a cruel man that runs the Nazi party, which is responsible for the air raid that bombed Himmel Street. He is also the reason Max was hiding and living in fear.

his power and control, but clearly underestimates them. It is with this man that Life decides to change her ways. Life who represents all that is nontraditional clashes with the traditional Lesego.

Since the 19th Century, women in Canada have fought political, legal, and social battles to find their place in Canadian society. From starting out in small, local organizations, to legal battles in the Supreme Court, Canadian women have come a long way. Unfortunately, it took a long time for many people to adapt to the changing roles of women, which made women still feel unequal compared to men. It is really striking to think that at one point society questioned if women could even be considered persons, just a small sample of the many changes women had to face through the course of history. This paper will analyze these changes experienced by Canadian women in that time period and how it affected their everyday lives.
Several characters are introduced throughout this memoir, some were very close friends others he did not care too much for, but he fought for all of them the same; as soldiers. Having performed his duty in
He is intelligent, clever and an excellent speaker. Like the tagline of the movie, he frequently makes an “offer he can’t refuse”. Another trait is his ability to read people, especially during Bonasera’s plea to the don. He is also a ruthless person, if he cannot deal with words, guns and bullets will. Even with his supposed evil, he is seen as many as a very loving father and many people love him. He was clearly hurt when he found out Michael gunned down Sollozo and McClusckey, indicating he loved Michael that he didn’t want his son to be part of any crime. He is able to separate blood and water, and embrace them both, evident when he adopted and raised Tom Hagen like he was a son. He also show a deep sense of morality, not agreeing to the dawning drug business at first, and when he did agree, he proposed that it should never be sold to kids and near schools. Near the end of his life, he became more relaxed and was able to enjoy his remaining
