In “Leave Your Name At the Border” by Manuel Munoz, he talks about how immigrants are forced to change their name to something more American so that it will be easier not only for the people around them that don’t speak Spanish but also that it would be easier for them to get jobs. For example, if someone's name is Jose and Carlos, they would have to change their name to John or Tony to be given
Some may ask what it means to be a part of a specific culture. It may be believed that it merely means to share the same qualities of race, language, and social beliefs. What is not really known are the rise of expectations to fill, repressed wants and needs, or even the binding religious beliefs. A person must begin to recognize the holdings a culture may have on them and how it affects their free will as an individual.

But, language shapes and reflects culture to an extent by directly correlating with changes in language influence the culture, but language rarely changes. When it does, it directly affects the culture. Many instances of changes in language that reflect in the culture can be seen as the characters begin breaking their usual cultural values and rules.
Culture is one of the most relevant elements that can define not only a society but also a country’s cumulative beliefs and system. Often noted as the origins of a country, culture is definitive in the sense that it harbors all the elements that can provide justification on the traditions and norms set by the society for its members. More often than not, the society members follow norms in order to create a harmonious community, and the beliefs and the traditions serve as the poles or grounding rules for each member to follow. Culture is very dynamic in the way that it can change over a variety of foreign influences but what is permanent about it is that original elements about it often lingers with the influences, therefore making it multi-faceted and broad. More importantly, culture serves as an individual and unique trait each society has, and therefore sets it apart from other countries and other societies.
People are often misplaced, having to adapt to new languages, culture, and ways of life. Culture can give bring people together as much as it tears people apart. With constantly changing cultures, people can learn and grow from others’ lifestyles, “… they are always changing…” ( Beyond Intractability). Culture can alleviate conflict by bringing people together and can help people of other cultures understand each other better and differences can be celebrated instead of conflicting.
In the book, Lives on the Boundary by Mike Rose, explains how people who immigrate to U.S. have adjusting. In U.S. there is a better education system, so many people come to the U.S. to get a better education and have more opportunities. Other countries have a bad education system and they have fewer opportunities. In the book, Mike makes good points about the education system. Mike explains how he dealt with diversity in the education system. In school, children are all taught the same thing but each student have their own strengths and weaknesses. To some student learning new thing comes easy to them. Whereas other students struggle with learning new things. Mike Rose’s believe that a teacher should go an extra mile to help students succeed in school. Teachers that care more about the students, help them succeed in life. When Mike Rose became a teacher he was understanding of the students that struggle because he could relate to them. He related to some of his students because he did not grow up with the best lifestyle. In the book, Rose talks about many people who influenced him through his life.
What is Culture? Culture can be defined in many ways such as religion, education, and music. According to Springboard, culture can be defined as "the shared set of arts, ideas, skills, institution, customs, attitude, values, and achievements that characterize a group of people, and that are passed on or thought to succeeding generations.” There are many ways people view the world. Culture among many influences interpret how we or literary characters view the world. Throughout many literary stories and life experiences, many actions and attitudes have been influenced by cultural background. Not only does culture influence how a person may think or act, it also informs how one may view the world. In the text “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan and The Absolutely
In this world, there are many different countries speaking their own individual languages. People can identify from each other’s language of who they are and where they are from. The language I speak shows my identity, culture and this is who I am and where I originally come from. However, my culture can be lost when immigrating to the most diverse cultural country which is the United States. The reason is because I obligated to learn a new language to adapt into the new society.
Pretend that you grew up speaking a different language your whole life, but when you started going to school you see that everyone else speaks a different one. No one has ever heard of your spoken language at home. You start growing up and realize that you are caught between two cultures. You are not like your parents and you are not like the other children at school.
Culture is defined as the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of human beings and transmitted from one generation to another (Staff, 2015). Culture effects the way a person perceives, communicates and behaves in the world, what is “socially” acceptable in one culture is not necessarily acceptable in another. Common language, gestures and signals are used to communicate within each culture and are therefore an extension of culture and how you speak is effected by what you were taught and how you view the world. Communicating is a give and take process and it is an experience that you share with someone.
The concept of culture is something that defines many aspects of one’s life. From physical objects to different ways of thinking, culture adds significance to human life and makes groups of people distinct from one another. Culture is essentially a group of people who come together with similar interests and points of view. According to the Center for Advanced Language Acquisition of the University of Minnesota, “culture is defined as the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of socialization.” From a more sociological perspective, culture is a way in which people come together in order to fulfill their needs. These shared patterns and ideas identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group.” Culture is one of the things that sets the United States apart from the rest of the world. Not that the rest of the world is not cultural, but the circumstance here is different. Many people of different cultural backroads come to this country in search of a better life. As a consequence, the United States has become a place where many cultures merge together like a colossal pot soup.

It was about three years ago, when I boarded a United States-bound airplane for a long journey across the Atlantic; it served as an appetizer for the journey to come. I have spent days of language barriers, small spurts of embarrassment, and of learning about American culture. In this essay, I discuss my journey from my native land, and the hardships I have faced. I talk about the obstacles that I have overcome even when I wanted to give in. My time at my current institution is almost done and now I must move forward. The university I would like to go to is the place where I can continue to move forward and best accomplish my goals.
