Sparta was a city state in ancient Greece. They were known for their powerful and ruthless army, and their rigorous training methods. Spartans were very strong people with simple but harsh lifestyles. when a boy turned seven, he had to leave home and go to what was called the Agoge which was a military training camp that they stayed in until they were 20. Sparta is important because there is a lot that we can learn from them and their culture. The period that they were from has many lessons and themes that have relevance to the world today.

Spartans believed that you should never give up, and never except defeat. They were taught at a young age that surrendering was a sign of weakness and cowardice and was shamed upon. Even when the Spartans were greatly outnumbered in the battle of Thermopylae, with only 300 Spartans they fought to the death, not going to surrender. Britannica.com says that, "A Spartan-led Greek army led by Leonidas tried to block the Persian advance at the pass of Thermopylae but was defeated despite brave resistance against overwhelming odds." It was also sometimes thought to be a crime to be a coward. Factsanddetails.com says that the most serious crime that a Spartan could commit was to retreat from battle. The Spartans that remained after the battle of Thermopylae committed suicide because they didn't want to face the shame of having to surrender. The Spartans were also ashamed to be seen with a coward.Greek philosopher Xenophon said that, Spartans were ashamed to be associated with a coward in his mess. The was the worst Spartans thought that it thing in the world to be thought of as a coward, which were they completely wrong? We need to have the mindset of the Spartans and be ashamed of cowardice. We need to face all the fears and struggles we have in our life head
