Emotions of love are of course a very natural and important part of life. But it is the ideas of what love is and should be that vary in large degrees. These ideas, which begin shaping us from a very young age, are crucial to how we approach future intimate relationships. How were your images of love and romance were formed? When love is modeled in an unhealthy, impractical way it is misguided and will result in unrealistic expectations and ultimately unhappy relationships.

The false realities of what love should be confuse Cleófilas in her search for an impossibly euphoric love relationship. Cisneros writes, “I’ve never married and never will. Not because I couldn’t but because I’m too romantic for marriage. Marriage has failed me, you could say. Not a man exists who hasn’t disappointed me, whom I could trust to love the way I’ve loved. It’s because I believe too much in marriage that I don’t. Better to not marry than live a lie” (69). Cleófilas has over-romanticized love to the point she believes in it “too much.” She has completely mystified the realities of marriage and romantic relationships by over glorifying the emotional aspect even to the point that she has decided it is impossible to gratify in the confines of a real life romantic relationship. Marriage to Cleófilas must be blissful and because it is not, she refuses to partake. She thinks it is because she hasn’t yet found the right man, but ironically by her unrealistic distorted standards, she will never find the right man. Because all men are imperfect, romantic relationships therefore cannot be perfect, and the standards she holds them to are unreasonable and impossible.
