Writing directions: Write a letter to your school board stating whether or not we should push back the school start time to 9 am. Be sure to include evidence to support your argument. Your letter should be at least five paragraphs, with each paragraph having no fewer than five sentences! Dear, Edmonson county board members. Have you ever been sleepy at work? We as students deal with being sleepy at school on a regular basis. I believe as students school should be fun and not tiring. The time we start is too early. This leaves most kids sleep cycles out of rhythm. Many doctors recommend that children receive between 8.5
Adolescents and adults need around 9 hours of sleep daily (De Souza 5). Since schools are starting so early, they can not get the needed sleep time, eight to nine hours. Even though teachers go to school the same time as students, consequences are worse in students and it seems to have more of a critical effect on students. No matter if it is a student or a teacher, the quality of sleep is very important for everybody.
One reason later start times should be introduced to more schools is the health benefits it can cause students around the world. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease control recommend that middle and high schools start
Some people believe that schools should start at a later time because kids/teens would be more energized and could sleep in, but others think that starting school at a later time would cause the school to have to buy more buses and more bus barns. Sheridan County school districts should not start school at a later time. So all kids that think that school should not start at a later time should write a letter persuading them not to change the start
There are many reasons for starting school later. One reason for school starting later is that it is better for their academic grades. In the article “Should School Start Later” by Justin Oneill,
Some schools might start school earlier and get out earlier than other schools, and some maybe start later and end later than others. Some might not even last seven hours like most schools do. Whatever the schedule is you’re gonna learn something from that day no matter what you think, such as Math, Social studies, Language Arts, Science, or Writing. Some schools might not even have 7 periods and some might have more than 7 periods. Some schools might not even have periods and just have

Furthermore, students struggle with this habit.
In the first place, students are not getting enough sleep. In the article “Should School Start later” by Lisa M. Herrington [20] “According to the National Sleep Foundation “59% of 6th-8th graders and 87% of high schoolers aren't getting the sleep they require”. This quote shows that students are not getting the sleep they need. And kids must wake up early how are they getting the sleep we need. “So why don’t kids just go to sleep earlier? It’s not that simple” Says Danny Lewin, a sleep specialist at Children's National Health system in Washington, D.C. “Adolescents have a deeply programmed biological clock to go to bed later and wake later” Says
“Why We Must and can Restore Safe and Healthy School Hours.” Start School Later, 2017,
Opinions about schools starting time differ all over the United States. Many districts around the United States are trying to start a movement to have school start later than they usually do. 70 districts across the nation are going to start at 8:45. If this happens, it can change the schedules of a big amount of students tremendously. In the article on Newsela, facts are stated about how lots of schools use scientists advice for when they should start school. Teen students need 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night, though many only get 6 to 7 hours of sleep as a result of early high school start times. Changing school start times in high schools is the only way to combat the gap between the times. Considering that many teens cannot fall asleep before 11 pm, modifying start times is the best way to improve students health. Changing school start times is beneficial to high school students, modifying start times would improve students health, improve driving skills, as well as save money for the school districts. Have you ever woken up in the morning, gotten ready for school, but you still can’t seem to focus? Well, that happens to many students, which is why many think that schools should have later start time. “Ameen Al-Dalli,16 years old, who will begin his junior year at Langley High School, said he has fallen asleep in class. The high-performing honors student said he has to get up at 5:30 a.m. and be at the bus stop at 6:20 to get to school for the 7:20 start time. Ameen said he aims for a bedtime of 11:30 p.m. but if he has a big test or a paper he might not go to bed until 12:30 or 1 a.m.. Despite the overwhelming evidence given by current research, many people refuse to change school start times because of the lack of noticeable impact some schools had or the impact it had on some people’s schedules. Pannoni cites a statement by the Iowa City Community School District which found that “the later start time . . . [did] not reduce the number of tardy students by any appreciable amount.” The principal of Ballard High School agreed by saying that he “would be surprised to see large improvements in either attendance or grade data compared with past years” (Pannoni). Many schools refused to change because of how the later start and dismissal times would affect extracurricular activities and students with jobs. This change would also interfere with bus schedules and childcare habits. However, these seem like small problems that can be overcome when the results are that “later school start times were associated with students sleeping longer at night, less tardiness, having higher test scores, being less depressed, using less caffeine and other drugs, . . . and experiencing fewer morning car crashes” (Fenwick).
There is a myriad of reasons which explain why students become sleep deprived during the school timings. For example, students are busy and have to juggle many things like jobs, extracurricular activities, chores, and homework after school (Epstein and Mardon, 2). With all these obligations, people cannot possibly expect students to get to bed on time and receive the needed nine hours of sleep. Even if they could finish their duties early, they are teenagers after all and want to have fun rather than habitually carrying out their perfunctory duties. When they have free time, they go to
