Freedom. Independence. Liberty. Right. Opportunity. Each word shares the same meaning. Freedom is the ability to do, say, and think as one chooses. Unfortunately, freedom, justice, and equality have not always been as omnipresent as they are today. Without these qualities, a society can easily be filled with unrest. Where justice is lacking, tensions rise and there is little room for social progress. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” explains how equality is needed in order to make social progress and also shares some of the detrimental effects of injustice.
