Writing the Essay
Fall 2012
Writing the Essay is a workshop-style writing class, a forum for students to develop complex ideas, think about the characteristics of effective and compelling writing, and engage in a conversation about the essay form. The goal of the course is for you to improve as a writer, reader, and critical and creative thinker, and for you to write essays that are finished products of high quality.

In order to receive a grade for each final essay, you must complete the writing assignments that lead up to the essay. In other words, assigned writing exercises are a prerequisite to writing each final essay.
Grades:
A work gives the reader a positive impression of excellence in all listed standards.
B work gives the reader a positive impression of general superiority in all listed standards.
C work is average in each standard.
D or F work is seriously deficient in one or more of the listed standards.
Final Grade:
Essay 1: 30%
Essay 2: 30%
Essay 3: 30%
Class participation/portfolio: 10%
Due Dates and Late Papers: Late papers will lose half a letter grade per class until they’re turned in (more than two weeks late will result in an F). At the end of each progression, please put all exercises and drafts in a folder with your final essay on top, and turn the whole thing in portfolio-style.
Attendance and Participation: Preparation, attendance, and speaking during discussions are all important parts of the class. Much of the learning in writing courses occurs through active discussion and in-class writing rather than through lectures. Therefore, to do well, you’ll need to show up literally and figuratively. More than two un-excused absences will most likely lower your final grade; more than four absences will put you at a severe disadvantage in the course, because the work
Distinctively visual representations allow the audience to envisage different purposes crafting emotions which stay with us forever. Graphic depiction is a fundamental characteristic within distinctively visual, thus the audience is able to be exposed to the intense illustrations exemplified by composers. Spudvilla’s portrayal of “Woolvs in the sitee” demonstrates the child’s inability to reconcile with himself. Contrasting to this notion; the playwright “Shoe-horn Sonata” to expose the brutal reality of POW camps during WWII. Therefore, distinctively visual forces the audience to succumb to the barriers society creates.
Letter Grade: A = 90 - 100%; B = 80 - 89%; C = 70 - 79%; D = 60 - 69%; F = 0 – 59%.

The Tropfest films Road Rage (2006) and Lemonade Stand (2012) both represent Australian stories and Australian voices. Both of the films explore the representation of Australians and show many different aspects of Australian culture. All assignments are due on the assigned dates that are scheduled in class. Assignments are considered late if they are not turned in on the time that was designated to be handed in. All assignments turned in by next class period will be subjected to a non-negotiable 75% penalty. If it is handed in two days after the designated date, there will be a non-negotiable 50% penalty. Late work will not be accepted nor evaluated if turned in three or more class periods after the assignment was due.
Writing an essay may seem like a huge obstacle to overcome, but with a plan of attack and a little organization, it can be easily completed. All it takes is seven easy steps.
Failure to do so results in an automatic 10% assignment grade reduction for every class period the assignment is late. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain class notes from any missed time from classmates.
One of the most important parts about writing is the process behind it. An essay should consist of an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Even though essays seems very mind boggling, it is actually an easy process if following the correct writing steps. It can be even easier if the writer enjoys the topic of the essay. There are certain steps a writer must take to keep a reader interested while showing enthusiasm for them wanting to learn more. These steps follow a set of guidelines including planning, free writing, revising and editing.
The book entitled The Chain Letter written by Julie Schumacher is a mystery/ thriller book. It is a book that focuses on superstitions and chain letters. It has 195 pages. Julie Schumacher is a well-published writer. This for is her 4th one and it was originally published on March 8, 2005. She has written many books that won awards. Her first published story is the Reunion and it was written to fulfill an undergraduate assignment. The Chain Letter was published by…… The Chain Letter is a story of a girl who tears up a chain letter that she received on her mail. Aside for being mysterious, this book is also a humorous one.
