Employers are ethically bound to do all they can to ensure that employees do not suffer illness, serious injury or death. They are by law required to carry out risk assessments as any accidents and injuries occurred which have not been risk assessed could inflict significant costs on the company. Outcome 5 Understand the importance of using PPE in the prevention and control of infections 5.1 Demonstrate correct use of PPE * Have the responsibility to wear PPE appropriately to avoid contamination as far as possible 5.2 Describe different types of PPE * Gloves - protect hands * Aprons- protect skin and/or clothing * Goggles- protect eyes * Masks and respirators- protect mouth and respiratory tract from airborne infectious agents * Face shields- protect face, mouth, nose and eyes 5.3 explain the reasons for use of PPE * Personal Protective Equipment reduces, but does not completely eliminate the risk of acquiring or spreading an infection.
