No one wants to feel like they do not belong or like they are not cared for. Transgender people are just like everyone else and deserve to be treated equally to cisgendered people, or people who identify as the gender they were given at birth. According to Sam Killerman, being transgendered means living "as a member of a gender other than that expected based on sex assigned at birth." This definition is extremely important because a transgender person is still a person.
Gender is seen as a spectrum, and one can fall anywhere on this spectrum. Again, according to Sam Killerman, being transgendered means living "as a member of a gender other than that expected based on sex assigned at birth." There are many more genders than just the one assigned at birth. Just because a person is born with male genitalia does not mean they have to be male.
There are many different Gender identities and gender neutral bathrooms affect more than just Trans people. People who are not transgender also have trouble when it comes to bathrooms. For example, someone who is gender fluid is described to "feel like a mix of the two traditional genders, but may feel more man some days, and more woman other days." (Killerman). It is very difficult for people who do not "pass" as a specific gender to use the restroom in public. This is not an issue solely felt by transgendered people.
