Disclaimer: The following paragraph is heavily exaggerated. Do not actually perform any of the actions below. This paragraph is meant for comedic purposes. Scissors beats paper. It makes perfect sense. Rock beats scissors. I understand the logic behind that too. The one thing I do not understand is how paper beats rock. Imagine playing a similar game to rock-paper-scissors, where you have a physical rock, piece of paper, and pair of scissors. If you throw a pair of scissors at a piece of paper, chances are that the paper will rip. Additionally, if you throw a pair of scissors at a rock, they may bend or break. However, I am willing to bet that if you throw a piece of paper at a

a. The sniper is undoubtedly a dynamic character. The author displays this through the plot, the sniper’s thoughts, and even states it directly. Liam O’ Flaherty wrote of the sniper being overwhelmed with penitence after defeating his opposition. In the story, the author directly stated how the sniper’s feelings had changed. Liam O’ Flaherty did this again when he wrote about the sniper feeling reckless after drinking from the whiskey flask.
b. One can also justify that the sniper is a dynamic character through indirect characterization. “Then when the smoke cleared, he peered across and uttered a cry of joy.” Liam O’ Flaherty wrote, proving that the sniper had achieved his goal. Later in the story, the author wrote, “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face.” Not only is this written dramatically, it is also the ending of the story. From this, the reader can infer that the sniper must have been heavily impacted and influenced (changed) by this tragic event. Thus, the sniper is a dynamic
When someone first enlists in the war, they are fresh, new, and ready to fight for their country. As the years go by, war breaks the soldiers down and turns them into rugged, motionless men. The generals mold them into killers with no feelings and only designed to kill without content. This is true in The Sniper by Liam O'Flaherty. The theme of war brings out the worst in people turning them into monsters is developed through three types of conflict: man vs man, man vs himself, man vs circumstances.
Through literature, Liam O’Flaherty, the author of the short story The Sniper, clearly illustrates how horrific and destructive war really is. He illustrates the appalling agony of the Irish civil war through a dramatic story of two brothers against each other in the war. Through the the author's writing, readers can conclude that the theme of The Sniper is that war destroys families. O’Flaherty sets emphasis on this theme by using many strong literary devices. The literary devices used that apply the most emphasis on the theme are situational irony, setting, and the author's use of direct characterization .
The theme of how war can tear apart families in “The Sniper” first appears at the start of the book when he shoots a woman. First, Dublin shoots a woman walking in the open field. The text says, “The sniper fired again, the woman whirled around and fell with a shriek and into the gutter.”The woman the sniper shot could have been a neighbor or friend because this took place during civil war. In civil war, the country divides and goes to war.
During the times of war, lines are blurred and deaths arise where guilt has no room to wrap itself around a soldier’s head as they choose between killing and being killed. Under the summer evening and heavy artillery fire of Dublin, Ireland, a republican sniper lays waiting, in a fanatical haze, behind the parapet of a building’s roof. He decides to light a cigarette, despite the risk of exposure, and encounters an enemy sniper opposite the street from his position. Promptly after, an enemy vehicle approaches, met by an informant, who divulged the sniper’s location. Having to execute the informant and a soldier exposed in the open turret, the marksman seeks upon the rival sniper, killing him by a ruse of playing dead along with an arm shot and feebly. Following a moment of hysteria, he evades the bullets of a machine gun, throwing himself aside the corpse only to find it to be his brother. In “The Sniper”, Liam O’Flaherty suggests the
Liam O’Flaherty in his story “The Sniper”, describing the point of view of an Irish soldier, in the battle of Dublin, during the Irish civil war. In the beginning of his story , he uses imagery when he writes,”The long June twilight faded into the night,”and in the end he uses the diction tone of emotion,”Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face”. Flaherty’s imagery and emotional diction creates a close distance between the reader and narrator, so close that the reader feels like a guardian angel viewing over the narrator’s shoulder, viewing what has happened. The relationship between the narrator and reader, appeals to the point of view of the main character, who the author is trying to provide an understanding
In “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, a Republican sniper safeguards himself in a rooftop in a late night of June in Dublin, Ireland. He soon realizes his enemy is across the street. He shoots at a man and woman who were standing nearby an armored car. Hearing this, the enemy across the street shoots at him and injures his arm badly. The sniper fakes his death and kills the enemy. Feeling remorseful, he finds out his enemy was his brother. The war between the republicans and the unionists in Dublin, Ireland gets pretty serious when you read the story (based on an autobiography), "The Sniper" written by Liam O'Flaherty. The republicans want Ireland to stay as a part of the United Kingdom while the unionists want Ireland to be its own country. Because of this war, many people die because of snipers in the army. In my opinion, the sniper can be considered and is a hero. It is because of the reasons he is fighting for, he kills an old lady and his brother,
In my opinion the sniper is a round character. There are various examples of him being a complex and very humane character throughout the story. In the beginning it states that he has the face of a student and is therefore quite young but despite that he’s a sniper who has no doubt killed others before. He later kills two nationalists with no remorse but after he kills the enemy sniper, the adrenaline from the battle leaves his body and he immediately becomes regretful. He is sickened by the body of the man he shot and he begins to curse the war. This shows a complex personality because although he is fighting for what he believes in, he doesn’t like the means to achieve them and the death of others. The sniper is also shown to be able to persevere,
War causes people to fight and kill their countrymen without hesitation. The sniper is not used to killing people, but he has to what he has to do, to survive. The story shows how a civil war can make brothers enemies. In “The Sniper”, Liam O'Flaherty suggests the horror of war, not only by presenting its physical danger, but also by showing its psychological effect.
The Sniper by Liam O’Flaherty and Cranes by Hwang Sunwon. In the war they fight the enemy, but who’s the enemy? Who died in the war?their country! They don’t know who the enemy is it could be their friends or family that they’re fighting against. But that’s the price they had to pay to obey their duties.
In 1919, the Irish Civil War had begun, and it had all started because the Irish wanted to separate from Britain. The two sides during the war, were The IRA and The Free Staters. In “The Sniper” Liam O’Flaherty uses scenes of violence to illustrate the theme: “War divides brothers”. Use of conflict.

In “The Sniper”, Liam O’ Flaherty suggests the horror of war not only by presenting its physical dangers but also by showing its psychological effects.
The character in the short story The Sniper is a very believable character. He is just like any other sniper in the army. Anything he shoots at he thinks of it as a target not a human being. This makes him a believable character because so many people did this before. The character is also believable because he is curious to see who it was that he shot.
The sniper was on a rooftop in Dublin, Ireland. His job was to snipe the enemies. He took a short break and had a sandwich, whisky and some smokes. He all the sudden was taking fire. He sets the cigarette down and takes position. He shoots and misses as does the enemy. Then an enemy car shows up and an old lady walks towards it. The sniper shoots the man and the lady that was at the enemy car. The enemy shoots again and shoots the sniper in the arm. Now there was a challenge he needed to escape, but the enemy sniper has blocked the exit. The sniper shoots and kills the enemy and runs to escape, then more enemy shows up. He hides the dead body of the enemy sniper only to see his only brother
In conclusion the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley has many dynamic characters like Bernard,Lenina, and more, but the one that stands out above the rest is John. John stands out for the actions that he takes, the background that he cames from, and the way he grows up to became who he was in the end of the novel. A dynamic character is someone who grows, progresses and never gives up that is why John, even thought dead in the end is such a great example of a dynamic
