The Liberian Struggle
Do you think you’re life is hard? How would it be if civil wars, corrupt government officials, gunfire in the streets, extreme poverty, severe illness and no indoor plumbing were added? That is what most Liberians had to deal with on a daily basis, due to the problems forced upon them that they had to attempt to solve as individuals not as a country. But these problems were caused by an already weakening system that was waiting to be toppled, taken advantage of and destroyed. Many Liberians would die and many lives would be shaken before it would rise again, yet when its change comes it will be stronger than ever. But before any of this happened Liberia would first have to be established as a country.

Doe later went on to take a military coup, his group was called the PRC or People’s Redemption Council, a corrupt group that murdered citizens and sold illegal arms and drugs to drug lords(www.pbs.org). Since the coup took place many groups through out the 1980’s all the way through 2000’s fought for power and land. Fighting for power continued while the country was still a democratic republic. Rebel groups are fighting with each other over land and power in attempt to rule over the population leading into their leaders’ election to president. Today the streets of Liberia are not safe, they are filled with guns and children soldiers shooting each other for a dollar and drugs …show more content…
The average US citizen does not have to deal with days full of violence nor do they deal with new government leaders every other day. Liberia although was a different case, citizens had to work to survive on a daily basis. Some people on this earth will never know what it is like to have to fight for their life, to have their country taken over by militias and to have almost their whole country below the poverty line. As people don’t know what it feels like to be that low they will never know what it feels like to bounce back from a depression and feel that

Founded in 1817 the society had advocated the relocation of free blacks and freed slaves to the African colony of Monrovia, present-day Liberia. The public and private funds raised by the American Colonization Society led to the settlement of approximately thirteen thousand African Americans in West Africa by 1867 and the establishment of the independent nation of Liberia. The organization’s guiding philosophy represented a middle ground between abolitionists and proslavery advocates.
From the start life has always been a battlefield for me and my family. In Haiti my father had studied to become an engineer despite his poor upbringing and my mother had worked multiple jobs to help support the family. Life in Haiti had already been tough but after a coup d’état and an election there was finally hope that Haitians would have to live under a repressive government no longer. The new government created hope which was then solidified when Duvalier announced his candidacy, by this time he was already a well-known physician that took part in many public health campaigns. My father remembers when Duvalier was elected, with promises of rebuilding a broken country and the happiness that followed, but this did not last. Shortly after
“Liberian Civil war fought in 1989-1996, is among the most deadly and destructive war in the history that lasted for more than 7 years and killed almost 3 hundred thousand people. This war was the worst ever in the history of Africa because it caused the infrastructural and property damage in the country. The war also displaced more than 1 million people in refugee camps in neighboring countries. This war led to a complete breakdown of law and order in the country. There was not any direct cause that led to this war but several reasons contributed in the creation of this destructive event. Hunger for power, greed and opportunities to control and to get more out of Liberia’s natural resources were the main reasons behind this conflict. As D. Elwood Dunn quoted “We begin with the assumption that the conflict arose from the tugs and pulls of different identities the differential distribution of
Over the centuries, the African people have endured many trials, obstacles, and tribulations. From the moment that they were kidnapped from their homeland, and had been savagely placed in the cargo holds on ships to be sold into slavery to the American people, the Africans (now known in the United States of America as African Americans or Black people) have journey far to achieve, as well as, accomplished what was thought to be the impossible. These things include but are not limited to, freedom, equality, independence, the right to vote, a fair education, a wider range of occupations to pursue, politics, but most of all, to live a better quality of life.
These events that led to the civil war in Sierra Leone destroyed its economic, political, and social system. The economics have been driven down since independence as seen before, from smugglers, to crooked political leaders destroying the economic system into pieces. The collapse of the economic system can trace back to many things. The political system has played a big part in it. The corrupt leaders as seen before in history like Stevens, and Mohob. In the book “Along Way Gone” by Ishmael Beah he experiences the messed up politics. He had first heard about it in the news about neighboring wars. Those wars were in Liberia. He had first hand experience, as he had fought for the government side which is no better than the rebels known as RUF. Ishmael roughly experiences this as he says
In America, we are privileged to have freedom. We can say what we want, and we have a voice in our government. We are extremely blessed to have access to that freedom, but it comes at a cost. In the Revolutionary War alone 650,000 US soldiers were killed, and that was just the beginning of our nation. Because of these sacrifices, we now have the freedom that is available to us today. Sadly, not all countries are as fortunate. Edwidge Danticat describes in horrific detail the struggles that Haitians face on a daily basis to obtain freedom for themselves and their children in her book, Krik? Krak! Her book contains several short stories, giving us perspectives from Haitians from past and present generations, and how they
Ultimately, developed and developing nations strive to improve their society. Neither are perfect but developed countries are more adjusted than developing. The United States compared to Haiti has shown much more effective qualities when it comes to health care, economic structure and education. Every country should continue to work forward in assisting their civilians in order for them to
Throughout the continent of Africa, a majority of the territories experienced colonization. Several nations, specifically Uganda, were placed under the rule of Great Britain. Uganda, an East African country surrounded by the Great Lakes of Africa, was one of the last parts of the continent to be reached by outsiders. THESIS STATEMENT HERE.
Sierra Leone is one of the many countries that are on the coast of West Africa. A rich country fell victim to barbaric people. Sierra Leone was named but not founded, by Portuguese sailor, Pedro de Sintra. Sierra Leone was colonized by Great Britain in 1807 in Freetown, Sierra Leone. This was the start of their rule over West Africa.
There were many economic struggles in Ghana that put sever stress on the residents. Because of the lack of money there are a huge number of people that are unemployed and will continue to be for a very long amount of time. Those between the ages of 18 and 35 are most commonly struggling through being jobless but this makes up so much of Ghana’s population. With a scarcity of money, infrastructural struggles begin to occur which is not easy to deal with. They barely have electricity, running water, heat, etc. and this can result in many uncomfortable results.
In 1996 fighting broke out again in Monrovia, however elections came soon after in 1997. Taylor was elected in the hopes that he would end the bloodshed, although he slowed it, it did not end. It slowed enough that refugees began to reenter the country, but at the same time many other leaders were forced to leave. Also during this time period the national economy seriously declined. In 1999 a second civil war started between ECOWAS and rebels who tried to seize Monrovia. This war claimed 200,000, or 1 in 17 Liberians, and forced millions into neighboring countries with refugee camps. One of the biggest impacts was the use of child soldiers, they raped and killed people everywhere. They were used on both sides, however, Taylor was known for using them against whoever he was fighting. The second war ended in 2003 where peace was sort of
The study examined four key ways in dealing with the Liberian orphan and OVC dilemma: The church, cultural aspect, international and domestic, and the Liberian Government.
The civil war lasted 14 years, ending in 2003. This was the main cause of Liberia’s under- developed energy sources. The civil war left devastating effects on the city of Monrovia. Important power stations were targeted by the other side, causing people to lose power for the entire duration of the civil war and afterwards as it is extremely costly to repair these power stations. After the war, looters took away anything that was left undestroyed by the war. Ultimately they were left with absolutely. Electricity was cut off to people across the city, damaging lives and work areas. People have had to live without proper access to electricity,
