Licensure Checklist and Comparison
To become a Licensed Professional Counselor, an individual must meet numerous requirements set forth by the State in which he or she will be practicing. Each State is responsible for determining and enacting the requirements established for licensure. Therefore, the requirements may differ from state to state. In this paper, I will compare and contrast the requirements for the states of Missouri and Texas according to the information obtained from the National Board for Certified Counselors website directory.
Missouri and Texas both use the title of Licensed Professional Counselor also known as LPC for licensed mental health care professionals. In the State of Missouri and Texas, the examination requirements are the same. Applicants are required to take The National Counselor Examination. The test is available through the National Board for Certified Counselors. The fee to take the examination is $275.00 for both Missouri and Texas. Not only do both states require the applicant to take and pass the NCE, but candidates must also take and pass the Jurisprudence Exam. The Jurisprudence Examination is an open book exam, which covers legal and ethical responsibilities for the state an individual is seeking licensure. This test is available online at www.i-counseling.net.
The Education requirements for the States of Missouri and Texas are nearly the same. The State of Missouri requires an applicant to complete 48 semester hours in mental health
