Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Same Sex Marriage Though the United States in modern times has fostered a politically correct environment, where any form of bigotry or bias is frowned upon and scorned, and though we live in a country that was founded upon the principle of equality, gay and lesbian Americans today still struggle for acceptance, and to be allowed in all fifty states to legally marry their partner. While this nation has fought bigotry and bias for many years, the same sex marriage issue came into focus in the late 1960's, and has grown in fervor and ferocity every decade since then. Many Christians disagree with the idea of homosexuality altogether. Many right wing conservatives, who rely heavily on the conservative Christian vote, lobby and argue against same sex marriage. But this is not just a Christian versus homosexual debate, many religions, such as Muslim, are against homosexuality, as are many minorities, which are also often deeply religious. The divide is quite entrenched. “Proponents argue that same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples and that prohibiting gay marriage is unconstitutional discrimination. Opponents argue that altering the traditional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman will further weaken a threatened institution and that legalizing gay marriage is a slippery slope...” (Walker, V.R., 2013) The slippery slope idea, as recently articulated by political humorist Bill Maher is a meaningless one. If we allow same sex couples to marry, that doesn't mean that humans should or would be allowed to with animals. Animals are not human, and they are not equal to humans, but same sex couples are human, just with different sexual orientations. If all humans are created equal, they should be treated equally as everyone else under the eyes of the law, no exceptions. The gay rights battle is a fairly new one,
