Faith can be hard to stick with, especially in a situation where it seems as if no help will be provided. Faith in religion may sometimes seem skeptical and hard to continue in having hope and trusting a higher entity, deities or deity. In the novel, Life of Pi, Pi Patel faces obstacles that test his faith, trust, and courage in God.
Yann Martel added a twist to Pi’s story to allow it to become intriguing and capture the reader’s attention. When Martel states, “The selective transformation of reality, the twisting of it to bring out its essence,” he means that Pi took characteristics and traits of himself and others, like his family, to create multiple characters. Pi twists the story in order for him to escape from reality, and pretend that animals were in fact there the entire time. All of his life, Pi has grown up around animals and they have brought him tranquillity and comfort. For him to discuss animals eases the situation and allows for him to ignore what has really happened. Pi’s strong faith in God and God’s forgiving judgment is enough to make anyone believe in God. In each of his stories, Pi cries out for help and turns to God for guidance and determination. God listens to Pi’s prayers and answers his prayers by supplying him food for himself and Richard Parker on the floating island.
Not only did God provide food and water, he was teaching Pi a lesson. The floating island signified Pi’s life without God and sin. During the day, he had fresh water and bountiful amounts of food, by night everything was taken away, which made his existence
In Wichita, Kansas, in the early 2000’s, a man walked into a police station and exposed himself to the cops that he was an undercover agent who had recently taken the identity of a local homeowner. The man gave them the police the address of the house that he was currently staying at. As Pi adjusts to his new surroundings, he begins to see how Allah has come to save him. For example, “after some minutes I crept up to the side of the boat … well, this was green. In fact, it was chlorophyll heaven”(286). This quote shows that Allah has presented himself in the form of an island, compelling Pi to find strength within to survive. The very green island, signifying a safe heaven for Pi, creates happiness and rebirth in way that an actual Elysium would.
Throughout Yann Martel’s Life of Pi many elements of the novel blur the lines of reality and fantasy. This leaves multiple facets of perspectives in his readers. Patel is thrust to the forefront of a catastrophic ordeal resulting in the loss of everything he knows and loves. As this occurs, we begin to see the total brutality of survival in both stories. Martel’s phenomenal use of symbolism, dualism, and religious allegory eloquently convey this imaginative world of brutality, savagery, and thirst for survival.

In Life of Pi, Pi tells his adventure in two versions. One is the story with animals, and another one is the story without animals. However, in both versions of the story, the story with animals is more tolerable for people to read. At the end of the interview between Pi, Mr. Okamoto, and Mr. Chiba, they are discussing which story is better: “So tell me…… The story with animals is the better story’” (Martel 398).
Everyone needs to believe in something, a moment without faith, our souls will be eternally lost. In the novel Life of Pi the theme concerns religion and the human faith in God as the notion of belief is argued as being preferable or even essential to faith. The novel investigates the nature of religious faith itself. The author scrutinizes the mind of the protagonist, Pi Patel, who is a devout follower of three very different religions and his choice to practice Christianity, Hinduism, and Muslim which creates a conflict among his family and even peers, who believe Pi would be better off practicing only one.
Abi Muthupalaniappan (52/B) Nguyen/Cucinelli Block ¾ Sept. 17, 2017 Life of Pi Fully Developed & Supported Paragraph Francis Adirubasamy first displays Pi's story to the author as "a story to make you believe in God," promptly presenting religion as a pivotal topic. Pi is brought up in a common, culturally Hindu family, however as a kid he becomes a more devoutly and more passionate Hindu and then also converts to Christianity and Islam. He practices all of these religions at once, despite the protests of his three religious leaders, who each assert that their religion contains the whole and exclusive truth. Instead of dwelling on conflicting views, Pi concentrates on the stories of his distinctive beliefs and their diverse pathways to God. In fact,

Faith and religion was one of the main things that kept Pi alive and from going mentally insane for the 227 days he was stuck at sea. Martel describes how Pi prayed to God continuously for the entirety of the journey, even though he had no explicit proof that God was real. However in a situation such as Pi’s, there was no other choice. Praying and practicing religious rituals became a daily routine for Pi as well as feeding Richard Parker after all the other zoo animals perished. “They brought me comfort, that is certain.
Authors often include personal experiences when writing, and weave them into the characters which they create. Yan Martel’s views and experiences clearly influence his characters. Martel attempts to convey several messages about religion, which become apparent with the realization of why Pi follows three religions. Understanding Pi’s religious pluralism allows readers to understand Martel’s perspectives on religion. Pi is first exposed to Hinduism, which shapes the way he views religion.
Pi’s love and faith is ongoing. He grew up in a zoo, he knew his way around animals. He believes animals and humans are all one species. Pi’s views on animals and people go beyond everything people have heard, it is all faith and what to believe The animal Pi truly hated was the hyena.
Religion is an important part of human life. For some it is a collection of myths that can lead to madness, but for many it is a source of comfort, protection, and hope. In Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, the main character is so enamored with religion that he decides to follow three vastly different religions, claiming that they all focus on his deep love for God. However, many people disagree with the idea that religion is meant to share love. Many people also believe that religion is dangerous, and that it causes discrimination, violence, and oppression.
In the Life of Pi, animals are one of the important things in the story. Animals are like Pi’s family member Pi learn a lot from animals that will help him to survive. Animals also reflect the human’s personality. In the Life of Pi, the main character Pi always live with animals because his father runs a zoo.
A major aspect of The Life of Pi is the use of religion as a focal point of Pi’s character personality. The way this enhances his deposition is through a complexity of a belief in a higher power or a deity. Throughout the story, Pi is referencing different religions that add suspense and action. But why has the author of the novel, Yann Martel, chosen to add this aspect to the story? The answer lies in understanding the character of Pi.
In the beginning of the novel we focus on Pi struggling with his beliefs as he tries to find his path throughout his religious journey. He faces many options and worldviews but as he progresses he begins to accept himself and what he truly believes. He grows in spiritual knowledge by questioning a Christian priest wondering if “this son...who goes hungry, who suffers from thirst, who gets tired, who is sad, who is anxious, who is heckled and harassed... – what kind of god is that? It's a god on too human a scale, that's what”(17). Through questions
