According to Cliff Notes, Developmental psychology is the scientific study of age-related changes throughout the human life span. A discipline of scientific inquiry, developmental psychology recognizes humans of all societies and cultures as beings who are “in process,” or constantly growing and changing. This discipline identifies the biological, psychological, and social aspects that interact to influence the growing human life-span process. Within the last 25 years, developmentalist’s researchers who study human development expanded their focus to include the study of the physical, motor, cognitive, intellectual, emotional, personality, social, and moral changes that occur throughout all stages of the life span (cliff notes). …show more content…
The last stage is the Formal operational stage. This stage is for ages eleven and up. This is the stage when thoughts are better conserved, more logical and more thought out. More hypothetical thinking occurs in this stage.
I believe that any of these stages can be affected by many factors. These factors include environment and surroundings, genes, and everyday interactions. As a parent I feel that it is very important to have day to day interaction with your child whether they are newborn or a teenager. I have a 5 month old son and a seven year old daughter. It is imperative to both of their development for one on one time and interaction as well as family time. With my son I know it is important to read to him, play and sing with him to help his development and with my daughter I know it is important to be patient, help her with her homework, play with her and have open line of communication to help her with her development. I want to make sure their development is on track.
While the stages of cognitive development identified by Piaget are associated with characteristic age spans, they vary for every individual. I remember reading about the girl who was locked up in a room with no furniture but a mattress, and a dog for a long time. And when the authorities finally got her out, the little girl thought she was a dog. And even years later after she got help and therapy, her brain was never able to develop and be right like it should, even
