English 121D Morgan Where Do I Live and How? Coming from one country and adjusting to another where everything is different, was difficult for me. Until this year, I have lived all my life in Pakistan. There are many differences between these two countries like the lifestyle, culture, religion and others. The main difference I have found is the lifestyle. This huge difference in the lifestyle of the United States has made it quite difficult for me to adjust. In exploring how life in Pakistan differs from the U.S, I have drawn parallels from this transition to that of the wilderness and saying that every time I made a change in my life I am thrown into the wilderness. I came to the United States because my father always wanted me to be an educated person and thought that the education that I receive should be one of the best in the world. I chose the U.S. because it had the best educational system and best universities. I applied to 5 universities other than this one and the University of Washington was in my eyes the best among them. Having a different religion and culture makes a big impact on the outsider. People in the U.S. are taught to be independent and need no one’s help to achieve anything. Parents keep their children until a certain age and then tell them to leave so that they can be independent and achieve things. The question is why parents put children out on their own at a certain age. To answer this question, I talked to different friends, and they told me was that their parents need time for themselves, the cost of a child’s care or even bad relationships with parents make children want to leave. Where I come from, this is totally different. My whole life was in the joint family system and if someone had problem or he or she is in need, the family will help them to counter the problem. Even if they do not have the power to solve the problem, they will attempt or ask other people to help. I think that the Pakistan system works well because I have never had any problem which was not solved and living together helps keeps things better then living independent. The
