Light, is a type of wave that has electromagnetic radiation, traveling in transverse waves at a different wavelength from the sources to be visible to the human eye. With the presence of light, human could see things with the sense of sight. The light come from different sources but mainly from sunlight which enable process of photosynthesis where plants make their food and sustain life on earth. Light, is also a sign of civilization, showing the presence of human whenever light is seen from the earth from satellite. However, excessive, undesirable and uncontrolled lighting on the earth is a huge concern as light pollution is getting consequential. Back to the ancient times, it was not abnormal to use the stars for navigation, calendar and time. Haplessly, due to heavy industrialization and the increase usage of lighting, the younger generation loses the opportunity to admire the beauty of the sky. Light pollution is mainly due to bad outdoor lighting design which enables the light to shine in unwanted sites instead of focusing it on the area that needs light. Moreover, it also creates such effects like light trespass, glaring and sky glow.
There’s no doubt that human health could greatly affect by light pollution. Poorly lighting design will caused glaring on the eyes. This happens when unwanted and dreadfully directed light enter the eyes that affects vision. It is vulnerable for drivers at night as overly bright light from the cars of opposite direction of the road enters
Seeing an increase in light pollution and a decrease in natural darkness, Paul Bogard in his essay “Let there be Darkness” uses logic to persuade the reader to preserve darkness. Opening the essay with a personal experience from the past, he convinces the reader of the danger of light pollution. The author uses statistics, pathos, and science to support his thesis.
Light pollution is becoming a major problem in today’s society, according to many. Experts believe is presents many problems to our lives and futures. In the Los Angeles Times article “Let There Be Dark,” by Paul Bogard, he uses evidence that emphasizes the major need for darkness, uses dramatic language to buttress his argument that this is an important issue that needs to be urgently dealt with, and presenting his reasoning that it is a solvable problem.
While Verlyn Klinkenborg has good authority on this topic he uses very little evidence that has been researched and proven. He only mentions two scientific studies. One talks about how light attracts animals and the other is a study that connects brightness in neighborhoods. Throughout the essay he gives what seems to be logical evidence that light pollution has a negative effect, but he is no scientist. The use of reliable scientific sources cited in the essay would have been better evidences. Klinkenborg could have supported his argument using sources.
Light pollution is light that is harmful, unwanted, or hinders the environment. Light pollution uses more energy because it shines light up instead of down. This means brighter bulbs are needed to create the same amount of light. Since New York City is a popular tourist attraction, light is essential to their ecosystem. Landmarks like Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and most public business building are using light for twenty-four hours continuously. The impact of light pollution is that it corrupts the sleep cycles of organisms in the ecosystem. This causes stress to animals in New York City and forces them to adapt in an unnatural way to survive. This
Light pollution is not just affecting large populated cities. Light pollution is happening here at Milligan College. Students are unaware of this problem because they do not know what light pollution is and how it’s a problem. Students already have plenty of worries, whether it has to do with their academics, sports, social or family relationships and even income problems. Nonetheless, students at Milligan should be aware of light pollution and the effects it can have on each individual. Joshua Filmer author of “Light Pollution: How does it impact people?”, states that the exposure of light at night can lead to problems such as cancer, obesity, depression, sleeping disorder, and others; this is also supported by an increasing numbers of sources and studies being done. Therefore, a quick survey was done and a handful of students were asked what is light pollution and how is it affecting you? (The students who participated in this survey
Paul Bogard gives a lot of detail, he argues that we as humans need to preserve natural darkness. Paul gives many examples as to how people all over the world are messing up by using light. "Today, though, when we feel the closeness of nightfall, we reach quickly for a light switch" this shows an example as to how quickly we react to the nightfall.
These forms of light pollution have a negative effect on living organisms and much more. The effects are classified into four categories; energy resources, human health, the ecosystem, and astronomy. The first effect light pollution
Have you ever wondered what light pollution is? Light pollution is the effect of artificial lights on the night sky. The problems of light pollution in the United States includes the hampers of our view of some of life’s most spectacular sights, the harming of wildlife and it prevents us from seeing the night sky.
“Ecological light pollution is like the bulldozer of the night, wrecking habitat and disrupting ecosystems several billion years in the making,” says Bogard to express the damage artificial light
Simply, living in the modernized age has faced us with the large issue of light pollution within the United States and other urbanized locations. After the invention of the light bulb, by Thomas Edison in 1879, the problem of light pollution has been exponentially increasing throughout the years. The brightening of the skies above our heads at night, due to man-made sources, had led to disruptive effects across the globe. For instance, light pollution washes out the view of the Universe; therefore, interferes with astronomical research on the ground. At the same time, light pollution can also have devastating effects on the natural ecosystem on Earth. Consequently, this type of pollution from light can also result in the increase in adverse
In the ted Talk “Look up for a change,” by Lucianne Walkowicz, the speaker describes a fast growing problem of Light Pollution. Walkowicz talks about how large amount of light is causing the starry sky to lose light and become black. This type of pollution is does not cause a drastic environmental change but will affect future generation, and harms nocturnal animals.
The problem that I found was that we leave all of our lights on and then this makes us use more energy which in turn makes us pollute the earth (watershed). I feel that if we were to implement
Imagine living in a world where there is absolutely no darkness. Many people have claimed that they cannot imagine a world like that. However, Paul Bogard has argued that the world become like that if there are no actions done to prevent this from happening. In fact, this is all happening because of light pollution that exists in the world today. Many of the cities in the world are often recognized as the “city of lights” and while this title sounds nice, it actually has a negative impact on the society. The endless light pollution that are released into the atmosphere are already negatively affecting the human life. In order to make to prevent this situation from worsening, Paul Bogard have decided to stand out and convince his readers to
Light pollution affects the lives of people around the world. It comes in a variety of forms and can be a nuisance, wasteful, and harmful. It may be a street light shining in a window, a high energy bill, or the absence of stars in the sky. Light pollution is a growing problem as human populations continue to thrive, land is increasingly developed, and Earth’s precious resources are consumed. In order to reduce current levels of light pollution and to keep the problem from escalating out of control, action must take place.
Most people have heard of air pollution, water pollution, and many kinds of pollution like them. Issues like these are covered extensively in the media and are targeted by many environmental groups. In fact, many of these issues play significant roles in political elections. Though these kinds of pollution are widely known, there is another type of pollution that receives far less attention. Few environmental groups mention it, and many members of the general public have not even heard of it. However, it is just as common and arguably as dangerous as the pollution types listed above. This pollution is known as light pollution. Fundamentally light pollution is the excessive use of light in urban areas, where growth of population and businesses brings with it large amounts of unneeded light. This light pollution causes countless negative effects ranging from the inhibition of scientific research to a believed negative impact on health. Light pollution 's most notable effect, however, is on the night sky. As more and more lights are installed, more and more stars are blotted out by the resulting skyglow. Because of this, light pollution is by far the most severe impairment to astronomy at both the recreational and professional levels. It also has a slew of other negative effects such as changing the habits of animals and contributing to an increase in cancer risk. Due to these problems, there have been several proposals to stop light pollution. The three most commonly proposed
