Light pollution happened slowly at first which was several decades ago it was a process that was hardly noticeable. A light here, a light there, burning way into the dark nighttime realm, helping us see in the darkness when people all their our beds fast asleep. The process still continues today, with little thought ever given to what we are stealing away. Our intentions are good but our methods need adjustment, and they needs to be done immediately. In fact, our methods should have been changed years ago, but nearly everyone has resisted, perhaps due to a profound lack of awareness. The use of too many lights at night can cause environmental pollution, known as light pollution. Light pollution can block our ability to see the original …show more content…
The night is being turned into day in most areas by poorly designed and improperly aimed unshielded outdoor lighting. Lights brighten our roads and highways from dusk to dawn, whether vehicles are traveling or not. It lights our parking lots and building exteriors whether or not employees or patrons are present. We think bright light frightens away crime, but no study has yet proven this to be true. The best assumption that can be made by these studies is people merely have a feeling of safety. Crime continues to rage on in large cities that never seem to sleep while remaining bathed in a nocturnal glow. The glow comes from bad lighting applied by designers who don't understand the four elementary concepts, which are shield it, point it down, don't use more than you need, and turn it off when you are done and not there. As the number of lights we use at night increases because of population growth and industrialization, the more difficult it will be for us to see the stars. However, as the human population started booming in the past and more industries wanted to work later hours than sunset, light pollution increased. In fact, an astronomer discovered this glow because the usage of light was blocking the astronomer from discovering new objects in the solar system. The knowledge and discovery of the galaxies is a priceless heritage. However, light
There is more population outside, taking satisfaction of an extra hour of daylight and fewer criminals out waiting for their subsequently victim. In fact, motor vehicle vs. pedestrians accidents were reduced by “8-11%” just by that extra daylight hour several lives were
Light pollution is becoming a major problem in today’s society, according to many. Experts believe is presents many problems to our lives and futures. In the Los Angeles Times article “Let There Be Dark,” by Paul Bogard, he uses evidence that emphasizes the major need for darkness, uses dramatic language to buttress his argument that this is an important issue that needs to be urgently dealt with, and presenting his reasoning that it is a solvable problem.
While Verlyn Klinkenborg has good authority on this topic he uses very little evidence that has been researched and proven. He only mentions two scientific studies. One talks about how light attracts animals and the other is a study that connects brightness in neighborhoods. Throughout the essay he gives what seems to be logical evidence that light pollution has a negative effect, but he is no scientist. The use of reliable scientific sources cited in the essay would have been better evidences. Klinkenborg could have supported his argument using sources.
There are various types of air pollution contributors in California such as fire generated pollutants and vehicle traffic, which add particulate matter and carbon monoxide into the air we breathe. According to an article by Union of Concerned Scientists (Cars, trucks, and air pollution, 2014) particulate matter is made up of fine particles soot and metal that can pose serious threats to human health when deep in the lungs. Other pollutants emitted from vehicles are: nitrogen oxide which lowers the body’s defense system against respiratory infections such as pneumonia, carbon monoxide which blocks oxygen from reaching vital organs, sulfur dioxide which is emitted by both power plants and vehicles affect children and asthmatics, and hazardous air pollutants (toxics) which are chemicals that are linked to cancer, birth defects and other illnesses (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014).
Bogard starts building his argument from the very beginning of his article. He builds his argument fact by fact to give you multiple reasons to understand the need to reduce light pollution. He states that "the World Health Organization classifies working the night shift as a human carcinogen." Without darkness our bodies are unable to perform some of the daily functions that we need, such as sleep and melatonin production. Without these, we are more likely to develop disorders such as diabetes and depression.
“ Computer images of the United States at night… show that what was a very dark country as recently as the 1950s is now nearly covered with a blanket of light. “ Using this to make us really think about the beauty of nature and what we are missing. Bogard brings in our health to give us a view of different problems that could occur beside losing the beauty of darkness, “Already the World Health Organization classifies working the night shifts as a problem human carcinogen, and the American Medical Association has voiced its unanimous support for “light pollution reduction efforts and glare reduction efforts at both the national and state level.” Putting the reader on an edge as we see more problems appear throughout the
Air Pollution today has lead CDC's fight against environmental -related respiratory illness, including asthma. An estimated number of 6.5 million deaths are attributed each year to poor air quality, making this the world's largest threat to human health.According to the World Energy Outlook and the IEA estimate that death due to household air pollution in Africa may decrease by 110,00 to 2040.However, due to economic growth, urbanization and automobile emissions, outdoor air pollution may rise from 300,00 to 450,000 over the same period. Am going to be looking at the causes of air pollution. the problems emerging with air pollution and also how we as a community can help decrease the amount of death rate associated with air pollution.I remember growing up in Africa Air pollution was always a talk about a subject that always comes out because it is really contagious due to the fact that we are breathing bad air that is caused by our human contribution to the environment.Air pollution is considered to be a public health problem, it is responsible for most of our health problems after some research has been conducted in many different parts of the world and regions. According to the Geochemistry and Health paleopathological research suggests that air pollution is a form of smoke, plagued our oldest ancestors.Air pollution has emerged as one of the leading risk factors for stroke worldwide.
Can you imagine surviving in a world where nighttime was just as it's viewed,”dark”. With no source of light other than the natural moonlight itself. Just imagine a montage as with every generation the productivity of light evolved, lighting up the night sky. But with more light source followed changes as well. The author of “let there be dark” persuades his audience that we are rapidly losing the night’s natural darkness before realizing its worth by using evidence, reasoning, and experiences.
Light pollution is a comparatively unknown and yet relatively serious problem that is constantly growing. Because of the way most lights are designed they throw light not just down, where it's needed, but also up and to the sides. This causes unnecessary light to be cast that can disorient animals as well as throw off their normal routines.
Light pollution is not just affecting large populated cities. Light pollution is happening here at Milligan College. Students are unaware of this problem because they do not know what light pollution is and how it’s a problem. Students already have plenty of worries, whether it has to do with their academics, sports, social or family relationships and even income problems. Nonetheless, students at Milligan should be aware of light pollution and the effects it can have on each individual. Joshua Filmer author of “Light Pollution: How does it impact people?”, states that the exposure of light at night can lead to problems such as cancer, obesity, depression, sleeping disorder, and others; this is also supported by an increasing numbers of sources and studies being done. Therefore, a quick survey was done and a handful of students were asked what is light pollution and how is it affecting you? (The students who participated in this survey
Paul Bogard gives a lot of detail, he argues that we as humans need to preserve natural darkness. Paul gives many examples as to how people all over the world are messing up by using light. "Today, though, when we feel the closeness of nightfall, we reach quickly for a light switch" this shows an example as to how quickly we react to the nightfall.
Have you ever wondered what light pollution is? Light pollution is the effect of artificial lights on the night sky. The problems of light pollution in the United States includes the hampers of our view of some of life’s most spectacular sights, the harming of wildlife and it prevents us from seeing the night sky.
Simply, living in the modernized age has faced us with the large issue of light pollution within the United States and other urbanized locations. After the invention of the light bulb, by Thomas Edison in 1879, the problem of light pollution has been exponentially increasing throughout the years. The brightening of the skies above our heads at night, due to man-made sources, had led to disruptive effects across the globe. For instance, light pollution washes out the view of the Universe; therefore, interferes with astronomical research on the ground. At the same time, light pollution can also have devastating effects on the natural ecosystem on Earth. Consequently, this type of pollution from light can also result in the increase in adverse
In a world of ever-growing developments, the blight of artificial lights is conquering the darkness of the night. To some, the fading darkness presents a major catastrophe towards human health, the ecosystem, and culture in general. One of these people is Paul Bogard. In his article, let there be dark, Bogard cleverly utilized devices such as statistics, imagery, and research findings across the world to illustrate that the removal of darkness from our nights only causes severe problems.
Air pollutions is a major problem across the united states and around the world. It is also probably the most serious environmental problems today. The term air pollution is just kind of tossed around and not taken as serious anymore although its effects are becoming greater. Air Pollution is toxic chemicals in the air, that can also be compounds and they are extreme enough to cause health risks. (Frank) This is damaging the ozone layer and creating global warming.
