Lightning is a mystery element to many people. The definition of lightning is; the occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accompanied by a bright flash and typically also thunder. There are many different kinds of lightning that occur all over the world. Lightning is formed by electric charges in the sky, from positive charges to negative charges. Lightning can also be very dangerous if exposed or struck by it. When thinking of lightning, the general thought is about a yellow streak of light zooming through the sky, however lightning can vary in size, color, pattern and many more things. One type of lightning is cloud to ground lightning with a negative charge. This type of lighting is a lightning discharge between a cloud and the ground started by a negatively charged stepped leader that is moving downward. Most lightning that hits the ground in a storm is, negative cloud to ground lighting. Positive ground to cloud is the same thing except it is started by a positive leader. The most common type of discharge is intracloud lightning. Intracloud lightning is lightning inside of a storm cloud, shifting between the different regions of charge inside the cloud. Intracloud lighting lights up the sky with a sheet of light, that’s why it is commonly referred to as sheet lightning.
