Lillian Wald was the first public health nurse, and the founder of The Henry Street Settlement and the Visiting Nurse Service of New York. Wald not only provided medical attention to those that needed it the most (poor immigrants) but provided preventative care teaching the immigrants about health and hygiene and about basic nursing care. In addition, Wald became an advocate for women and children, “helping with the establishment of the United States Children’s Bureau, National Child Labor Committee, and the National Women’s Trade Union League.” (Harkness and DeMarco, 2015, p.16). She was the woman who set the standards for the field of public nursing and “made health care her first priority” (Feld, n.d.). Lillian Wald faced many health issues
