A truthful leader will have greater respect from his subordinates and they will also have more trust in a leader they can believe. In order to be known as honest Lincoln knew his words, deeds, and actions would need to be beyond reproach so he even refused to have dealings with dishonest people. Abe Lincoln was able to win people over because of his understanding of society. He showed attributes that, at the time, were more caring and loving than most people. For example, in some of his speeches from Illinois, he took a stance against slavery. He questioned if slavery was morally and constitutionally right, which was a big risk at the time. This move won over the liberal citizens in America, but greatly alienated the South, especially when Abe Lincoln won the election of 1860. His determination was another huge factor to him being a great influence. Even though he started out not taking the War seriously, which causes the Union to lose some important battles, these losses are a wake-up call for Lincoln, which reinvigorates him to fight back against the South and win the war, saving the Union and freeing the slaves. Lincoln, Commander In Chief: Abraham Lincoln was unprepared but did everything he could during the time of the Civil War. His only experince of war was the Black Hawk War that occurred in 1824. He mocked his entire military career during one of his speeches to Congress because he felt he didn’t make enough change. During his time as Commander in Chief, he learned a lesson on how to deal with military forces when he ordered troops into service. Despite the lack of experience with military, he was a self taught lawyer, master of geometry, and did try to work hard with military stategy. By 1862, he was actually considered a master. Another great leadership ability that Lincoln possessed was his ability to appoint the right people for the right jobs in his Cabinet. Even though they were some of the greatest minds of his time, some of his Cabinet members were also some of his biggest political adversaries. Lincoln also had the ability to make a mistake, learn from it and then move on, creating an environment of learning in his administration. Also, when the administration was successful, Lincoln was willing to share the credit with his administration, not taking all the credit for himself. This ability can be a great motivator, since it gives people a sense of accomplishment (Moreton, 2008).
To start with, I want to write about Abraham Lincoln. Most of the articles I read in regards to Lincoln suggest Lincoln as a follower of the “Constitutional Leadership Model”. Since I have to write in concern to the three styles mentioned above, Transformational Leadership is the one that fits best for Lincoln. “Transformational Leadership” deals with the issue on how the leaders motivate their followers by the first give and then take rule. Basically it is a trade off. In the movie we could see Lincoln offering political jobs for people that vote for his amendment. It is important to keep in mind, that Lincoln not only was a leader, he was also a politician. As a Transformational Leader, you build up the trust respect and furthermore loyalty of your followers. Especially for Lincoln that was important, since he was in a war and had to motivate his soldiers to fight. Lincoln understood the importance of being close to his army. He did not make a difference between a Corporal or a General. For him everyone was the same and he motivated them to visit him and talk with him. He visited his army as often as he could and indicated accessibility. Another indication for his successful leadership was his re-election. A huge amount of votes came from the soldiers. It was not easy for him to get
