Lincoln was a successful strategist because of his great leadership skills. He was a great leader because he was great at make decisions but took a long time to make decisions. An example of his long decision making is when the south succeeded from the Union and five days later the South attacked Fort Sumter. After a few long weeks Lincoln had a plan, he told South Carolina that he was going to send provisions to Fort Sumter. That he would send no troops, or ammunition unless South Carolina attacked Fort Sumter(ushistory.org).This action demonstrated his leadership skills because it showed that Lincoln takes a long time to make decisions but when he finally does they are good decisions. Lincoln 's leadership successes made people listen to him and pay attention to him. His ability to influence a crowd is illustrated when everyone was freaking out and waiting for Grant’s message. Lincoln walked in the room and the whole room went quiet(Spielberg). This shows leadership because all the people that went quiet when he walked into the room shows that he was very respected. Lincoln was a great leader because he was a great speaker. He was a great speaker because he wrote and gave some of the most important speeches in history. One of those speeches was the Gettysburg Address which honored the dead who fought at gettysburg (Roy P,1). Abe Lincoln was able to win people over because of his understanding of society. He showed attributes that, at the time, were more caring and loving than most people. For example, in some of his speeches from Illinois, he took a stance against slavery. He questioned if slavery was morally and constitutionally right, which was a big risk at the time. This move won over the liberal citizens in America, but greatly alienated the South, especially when Abe Lincoln won the election of 1860. His determination was another huge factor to him being a great influence. Even though he started out not taking the War seriously, which causes the Union to lose some important battles, these losses are a wake-up call for Lincoln, which reinvigorates him to fight back against the South and win the war, saving the Union and freeing the slaves. This ended up being his greatest strength, and what decides how he is remembered in history forever.

He mocked his entire military career during one of his speeches to Congress because he felt he didn’t make enough change. During his time as Commander in Chief, he learned a lesson on how to deal with military forces when he ordered troops into service. Despite the lack of experience with military, he was a self taught lawyer, master of geometry, and did try to work hard with military stategy. By 1862, he was actually considered a master. Many historians consider him better than any other presidents before him, despite the fact that he was bounded by war. His first document was actually war-related. He tried his best even though in the end, he ended up being shot just five days after General Robert. E. Lee surrended at the battle of Appomatox. Lincoln really spent most of his time dealing with war matters than anything. He only left

Frederick Douglass describes Lincoln in his “Oration in Memory of Abraham Lincoln” and being “swift, zealous, radical, and determined.” He ended his statement by saying “his memory will be precious forever” (Document K). Another quality that made Lincoln such a great leader was that he thought of the country as a whole before himself.

When the North need a great leader the most, they had Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln was an effective leader during the war. He was very firm in his orders and was a direct problem solver. Lincoln preferred to react to problems and to circumstances that others had created rather than to originate policies and lay out long-range designs. At first, however, Lincoln believed that he should leave the running of the army to his generals.

Having come from humble beginnings it could be said that Abraham Lincoln rose up to meet all the challenges that would greet him, and it could be argued that at the time the only person who could successfully guide the United States through the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln. To start with, I want to write about Abraham Lincoln. Most of the articles I read in regards to Lincoln suggest Lincoln as a follower of the “Constitutional Leadership Model”. Since I have to write in concern to the three styles mentioned above, Transformational Leadership is the one that fits best for Lincoln. “Transformational Leadership” deals with the issue on how the leaders motivate their followers by the first give and then take rule. Basically it is a trade off. In the movie we could see Lincoln offering political jobs for people that vote for his amendment. It is important to keep in mind, that Lincoln not only was a leader, he was also a politician. As a Transformational Leader, you build up the trust respect and furthermore loyalty of your followers. Especially for Lincoln that was important, since he was in a war and had to motivate his soldiers to fight. Lincoln understood the importance of being close to his army. He did not make a difference between a Corporal or a General. For him everyone was the same and he motivated them to visit him and talk with him. He visited his army as often as he could and indicated accessibility. Another indication for his successful leadership was his re-election. A huge amount of votes came from the soldiers. It was not easy for him to get
Another great leadership ability that Lincoln possessed was his ability to appoint the right people for the right jobs in his Cabinet. Even though they were some of the greatest minds of his time, some of his Cabinet members were also some of his biggest political adversaries. Through his great leadership, he was able to assemble this group and to pull them together to make it work. Lincoln also had the ability to make a mistake, learn from it and then move on, creating an environment of learning in his administration. Also, when the administration was successful, Lincoln was willing to share the credit with his administration, not taking all the credit for himself. This ability can be a great motivator, since it gives people a sense of accomplishment (Moreton, 2008).
