“Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence or infirmity”- Preamble to the Constitution of WHO as adopted by the International Health Conference On September 2015, for the first time, world leaders are recognizing the promotion of mental-health and well-being as health priorities with the inclusion of mental health in goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Agenda. With that inclusion, we believe that this will have a positive impact to 450 million people which currently suffer from the condition. Within SDG Goal 3 “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, there is one target that are directly related to mental health which is target 3.4: “By 2030,

What’s worse is that ASEAN Countries in general have shown small commitment to mental health (generally only 2% of health spending), and even where “legislation and policies exist, they are at best, incompletely implemented.” The lack of care not only comes from the government but of the people too. There is a wide tendency to stigmatize and discriminate people with mental illness in Asia. People with mental illness are considered as dangerous and aggressive which in turn increases the social distance. The pathway to care is often shaped by skepticism towards mental health services and the treatments offered. Mental health issues are still somewhat a taboo subject in Asia, and are associated with weakness, guilt, and shame. As a result, the shattered psyches of many are often simply swept in a corner, left to fester.
With the increased awareness of recognizing and undertaking mental health problems, and with an ever-growing concern of this problem in our country, Indonesia, and all of ASEAN, team YOUNG PIONEERS realizes that Southeast Asia needs an innovation to promote healthy living especially the psyche. The innovation is called “LINGKAR” which translates into the word circle in Bahasa Indonesia. Lingkar is a Peer Group Sharing platform that specifically targets employees
From there, the article talks about how mental illness is a global problem and how societies all over the world see it as a burden. Because of this, mental illnesses have become a chronic disease, especially in the United States; this because nothing is being done to help those affected. The article has a focus on creating strategies to help resolve or improve the problems there are with mental illness. The author looks at past resolutions and asks people who are actually going through this themselves in order to better understand what society can do to help alleviate some of the pain and
Today, protecting and strengthening our ‘mental health’ could not be more important. With our quick pace, 24/7 culture, we face more stress from our daily lives than before. Many of us work extended hours or multiple jobs, and take fewer vacations. In fact, one in three American employees is chronically overworked. The line between work and home life is often blurred so home is no longer a place of rest. Sleep and exercise feel like luxuries. We are eating poorly more often. We are constantly bombarded with information. We are also more disconnected from family, friends, and neighbors, and less engaged in our communities than we use to be. Trusting in one another has steadily declined over the last 30 years. Children aren’t immune either; many are racing from on activity to another without any downtime.(2007 Mental Health America.)

A national strategy for promoting mental wellbeing and mental health is No Health Without Mental Health.
The Healthy People 2020 initiative is a government-sponsored program designed to use science-based, 10-year national objectives to improve the health of all Americans. Healthy People 2020 encourages collaboration across communities, empowers individuals to make informed health decisions, and measures the impact on health of these activities ("2020," 2013). The goals of 2020 related to mental illness are to improve mental health by assuring access to quality mental health services, to reduce the suicide rate, to increase the number of homeless persons who need and also receive mental health services, to reduce the number
The goal of this topic set by Healthy People 20/20 is to improve mental health through prevention and by ensuring access to appropriate, quality mental health services. (Healthy People 20/20) Through my experience of working in the mental health field, I have found and can attest to their goal that quality mental health services are extremely important and make a big difference on the quality of care a person can receive.
Over the last decade more immigrants have traveled to the United States from Asia than any other nationality (Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum [APIAHF], 2015). Understanding the specific needs of this population is important to prevent health disparities. Currently Asians are the only racial group who’s leading cause of death is cancer (Tseng et al., 2010). Asian Americans are also more likely to suffer from hepatitis B and tuberculosis. Both children and adults are more likely to have diabetes due to obesity. Many Asian Americans also suffer from mental disorders, specifically depression and PTSD (Tseng et al., 2010). Cambodian patients in particular have “significantly higher physical and mental health problems compared to the general population” (Poitras, 2013, para. 1). In fact, sources noted that terrible treatment by the communist group Khmer Rouge which resulted in the Cambodian Genocide, caused a great deal of mental illness in Cambodian immigrants (C. Heinrich, personal communication, April 24, 2016; Poitras, 2013). Unfortunately, this cultural group experiences considerable barriers to health care for several reasons.
According to the World Health Organization, health is officially described as ”a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 1948.)
Mental health—and the stigma that comes along with it—is a very important issue, one of global importance. Shah and Beinecke explain that 450 to 500 million people suffer from mental illnesses (15). Just considering the amount of people who suffer from mental illness is enough to prove that this is a global issue. Despite the large amounts of people who are affected by mental illness, only one third of countries have some sort of program to help (15). This shows the lack of concern for those who suffer from mental illness. Stereotypes affect many people, and those with mental illness are no exception. Everyone has their own preconceived perspectives and notions of mental health, and many of them are uninformed and unjustified. It is up to us to start changing our viewpoints on mental health.
The World Health Organization defines physical and mental health as: “A state of complex physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease.” Despite cultural differences, many societies know the importance of good mental health. However, many still search for ways to promote mental health, which raises the question of, how can mental health be achieved?
Mental Health as described by LaVeist and Thomas (2005) is “a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity” (p. 84). Mental health functioning is important regarding a person’s well-being, being able to interact with others in a healthy manner, and contributes many things to

Since we’ve been children, we’ve always been taught the importance of keeping up the physical health of our bodies. Whether it was a motivational speaker coming to talk to us about how important it is to have a healthy and balanced diet in middle school, or our elementary school teachers telling us about the importance of physical activity along with the benefits and health factors of fruits and vegetables, the importance of good health has always been stressed. Unfortunately, while people stressed the importance of physical health, mental health does not receive the same treatment. This has caused many people not to know about the importance of treating your mental health, which should be emphasized just as much the importance of
