ENG 122-404 27 February 2012 The Death of Print and the Drowning of Quality Writing Daniel Okrent has been in the publishing industry his whole career. He is a published author and has served as an editor for Time, Life, and the New York Times. In a 1999 lecture to students attending Columbia University’s School of Journalism, Okrent predicts, “I believe they (news papers, magazines, and books), and all forms of print are dead” (Okrent 578). A little harsh, wouldn’t you agree? But fear not, he then goes on to describe how even though the death of print is inevitable, it really doesn’t make a difference because it is the words, sentences, and paragraphs in those forms of print that are important. Now, the majority of the reading I

Video 1: In the video Pressure + Ink: Lithography Process, the artist had to go through some very specific procedures before he could transfer the print to another paper surface. Since Lithography revolves around the fact that water and grease do not mix together, someone had to first draw a picture on a water/grease absorbing lithographic stone using a greasy drawing media like litho-pencils or crayons to create the grease printing image areas. Afterwards, the artist had to treat the stones through an etching process by first rubbing gum arabic onto the lithium rock surface to designate the areas where the water will be absorbed (or the non-image area) and then lithotine (a greasy solvent that helps create the greasy base for the ink on the
Before the invention of paper it was very costly to produce and purchase books, the man called Hui Shi was a scholar and needed five whole carts to transport his books needed for teaching, not only were these books big but were also very heavy and had to be laid down on the floor or on a desk to turn the pages. The books were made of thick wood and used a lot of effort to make, Cai Lun wanted to create a cheaper and easier solution to making books. After lots of attempts of mixing different things together he finally realised what he could combine to create a lightweight and inexpensive writing surface that would change the world
When these publications were illustrated, the wood-block was the only means, helped by the metal stereo and electrotype, in which pictures could be printed with text in a single pressing on the same page. That required the growth of a great craft industry, probably some of the finest in the century.
The human race has worked endlessly trying to improve our way of life, building off basic inventions - such as the wheel - to construct something other than its intended use - the car. Since the annihilation of the ancient city - Palmyra - archaeologists have been presented with a troubling issue - whether or not to rebuild the ancient city. Even though the technology to accomplish this restoration surely exist, it doesn’t mean that it should happen.
Hand: Intaglio is a form of hand printing, this involves using many different elements throughout the process. First you use a metal plate, this then covers the surface in copper with a roller, and this is to protect the plate from the etching process. The next element within this process is to start the design of the printed piece. This is done by using specially designed needles made of steel, they are made out of steel so they do not react with the metal used on the plate. You will then start to use the needles to uncover the copper below the protected surface, this then will become your design. Once the print has been finished, the sheet of metal is placed in an acid bath made with nitric acid. The longer the plate is left within the acid the more detailed the finished product will be, when handling the metal plate near the acid, protective clothing must be worn. The acid used can burn through skin if not
Variable Data Printing in Torrance Considered one of the safest cities in its county, Torrance, California is also known for being where the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) was founded. One of Los Angeles County’s most pleasant communities in which to live, Torrance is home to 1.5 miles of beaches. Residents here appreciate that unlike the more well-known neighboring Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach their beach is quieter and less frequented by tourists. Businesses here, appreciate the many same attributes that residents cherish in Torrance.
