Write a three- to four-page article review in which you discuss methodological issues unique to psychological research and analyze basic
One of the most eye opening experiences of my life occurred in the second grade. I would have never thought that doing one simple assignment in elementary school could change my whole perspective on literacy. My understanding of literacy was sparked when I had read my first real book. I remember sitting down on the vividly colorful carpet day dreaming about playing Mario Cart on my Nintendo 64 while everyone was obediently listening to the teacher read a book out loud. It wasn’t that I did not know how to read or listen, I just didn’t care. Reading to me used to be tedious because I did not understand the purpose of it. I did not grow up with the luxury of my parents reading to me because they weren’t literate in English, so I had to figure out for myself why literacy is vital in everyday life. My ongoing learning experience with literacy can be traced back to one simple visit to library.
The findings in this research has opened my view on the proposed integration of psychology and primary care professional. The participants in the pilot study, although a small group, finds the integrating of psychology and primary care to be a beneficial to individuals with chronic diseases. It is evident no one profession in medicine should work alone. The collaboration/integration could have successful results. This collaboration could be deem a positive benefit to the world of science, assisting in the battling issues of physical and mental health issues. Therefore, it is of vital importance in my area of psychology to accept the integration process in working as a team, incorporating more inputs, validating theories, producing new
State level licensure of psychologists is a relatively recent initiative by health boards. After World War II, the demand for psychological expertise expanded in large part due to an influx of veterans needing mental health services. The Veterans Administration (V.A.) subsequently became a large employer of psychologists and also established multiple internship training programs, originating “clinical psychologist” as a job title (Reaves, 2006). At the licensure level, the term “clinical psychologist” is often used to refer to health service psychologists more generally, and has been a source of confusion (Hall, 2011; Health Care Financing Administration, 2000). As V.A. employment of psychologists expanded, the number of private practitioners also began to increase, creating an impetus to propose state licensure laws to help establish minimal standards of education and training (DeMers et al., 2014). Because it is difficult to monitor the quality of care provided by licensed psychologists who are not subjects of a complaint (Keith-Spiegel & Koocher,
Was there a theoretical /conceptual framework for the article? If so, what was the theory or conceptual model/framework and how did it relate to the study?
There were contextual forces as well as work in America to foster the growth of applied psychology. The number of people with a Ph. D. in psychology rose and there were not enough academic positions to employ them, and when one attained a teaching job many administrations did not value (or fund) psychology programs. As psychology was a newest science when compared to physics and chemistry…received smallest financial support, so need to proof that psychology is useful in solving social, educational and industrial problem in order to improve budgets. An emerging societal problem was a dramatic increase in public school enrollment, which opened doors for some psychologists. Thus, the focus of psychology shifted towards the application in solving real-world problem.
“Few fields of study offer more career opportunities than does psychology” (Sternburg 3). There are a wide selection of specialties a person could go into with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. In graduate school, which is a must to attend, there is the option to explore the different specialities or to go into the desired specialty without any research of the others. There are also many options within a specific specialty. There is the option to be a teacher, to work for various organizations, be a speaker, to have your own practice, and many others. In the psychology field these options can all be combined. In fact it is expected of psychologists to do more activities involving their specialty than solely sit in an office and listen to patients. There are two specialities that I am interested in however, over the years, these specialties have become very similar. Clinical and counseling psychology have evolved to become one in the same. Someone who specializes in clinical psychology are more
There are many professional pathways within psychology that an individual may apply themselves to for their career. These include: clinical, forensic, health, and educational psychology. The professional career pathway within applied psychology which will be discussed in this essay is the field of clinical psychology. Clinical psychology aims to reduce the amount of psychological distress an individual experiences and enhance the promotion of psychological well-being. Clinical psychologists attend to both mental and physical health problems including addiction, anxiety, depression, learning difficulties and relationship issues in order to help individuals resolve their problems. Clinical psychologists predominantly work within hospitals, mental health groups and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (Clinical | Careers, 2016).
Have you ever wondered why people do the things they do? Everyone behaves differently in their own little ways, but sometimes these things cannot be understood. Through psychology, people are able to interpret behavior and apply the data to diagnose mental illnesses. As Ronald Reagan once said, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone”. The role of being a psychologist means helping others by studying behavioral, cognitive, and social processes. This information is interpreted and then used to benefit others emotionally and mentally, and allows people to better understand how the mind works. Becoming a psychologist is rewarding when you consider the responsibilities, salary, and requirements associated with the profession.
Common misconceptions within my literacy central focus may include students believing that when they retell a story, they are rereading the book to someone. This misconception will be addressed in my learning segment through discussion and interactive modeling. Through discussion, I will explain to the students that when they retell a story they are using their own words and not the authors words. This will be practiced when the students are retelling the story through role-playing. The Three Billy Goats Gruff does have many lines that the students will memorize, therefore the teacher will need to point out that students can include those lines when they are retelling the story because it provides extra detail to the person they are retelling
Clinical psychology is just one of the many subfields that psychology has to offer. Those who choose to enter clinical psychology aim to help people with addiction, emotional stress, mental illness, or any other type of mental problems. Knowing what a clinical psychologist does in their practice is important in understanding their profession. A clinical psychologist's education is the most prominent part of their career; without it, they cannot be considered a psychologist. The process and requirements of employment for psychologists are scattered, varying from state to state, as well as their salary and where they may be employed. The future and growth of clinical psychology can only be
I believe all the general education literacy outcomes are equally important, but the order of importance depends on a person career choice. The psychology field I am considering is counseling psychology. The program outcomes I think are important for social/ counseling psychology are communications, global awareness, and research and information. Communications is important in counseling psychology because majority of the work in counselling psychology revolves around communicating with people. Global awareness is important because in the world of therapy and research I will be dealing with different cultures and people than me. Psychology and health fields bring together the worlds brightest minds regardless of beliefs, and
Literacy is defined as being literate, that is, being able to read and write in a language. My personal experience with literacy began at an early age, at the age of 4 when I began to sit and read words and letters in the back of my mother’s car. Soon enough, she would bring me a magazine called “Majed” which, in the 90’s, was a popular magazine. With this, I began even more interested in reading and writing and reviewed every word in the magazine associated with each of the short pictured stories. It was the first memory I deeply recall of literacy and it was what laid the foundation for my personal love of reading and writing. The methodology used for this is an interview. There are three interviews which are analyzed and brought together in the form of a narrative. This narrative serves to better explain the emotions and thoughts that the interviewees had about the idea of literacy.
Health psychology is a diverse career field; psychologists can be employed anywhere from hospitals to research to influencing health care. “Health psychologists… conduct clinical interviews and behavioral assessments. They may also participate in interventions with individuals or groups — for example, programs to help people reduce stress, quit smoking and avoid sedentary behaviors…They may study the causes of health problems and how to prevent them, or explore why certain groups don’t seek care when they need it. They may also help patients understand and come to terms with a diagnosis, or follow a treatment regimen in order to increase the probability of their full recovery (American Psychology Association). Health psychologists have a broad spectrum of people to treat as they treat people with mental disorders and create treatment plans for people; health psychologists need to understand all parts of psychology to provide effective care for their patients because health psychologists research, test people, and help their patients gain skills so they can better take care of themselves.
A defining moment in clinical psychology training occurred during the Vail Conference in 1973 with the approval of a different training model. In addition to the Boulder model, the Vail model, referred to as the scholar-practitioner model, was approved. This version proposed that clinical training would stress providing professional psychological services while focusing less on training in research. Additionally, the symposium confirmed the concept that graduate education need not take place only in the leading
