Satisfactory Essays

Throughout my life I have been expected to live up to the expectations of not only my family but my community. This struggle is present in the lives of everyone from the day they are born. The problem with living up to someone else's standards is that nothing ever seems to be good enough. In Catcher in the Rye, Holden struggles to live life the way he/people are supposed/expected to. He is constantly striving to find a way to escape this confusing reality. During his date with Sally Hayes, Holden continually suggest that they should flee West together and “...get the hell out of here” (Salinger 171). He does not realize how unrealistic his plan really is. Holden creates hopeless and spontaneous dreams throughout the story to rid his responsibilities.
