Literary Analysis of “The Gift of the Magi” “The Gift of the Magi” is a story of true love and sacrifice for each other. The story takes place on Christmas Eve. Jim and Della Young are the main characters who are a poor couple that lived in an apartment for eight dollars a week. Jim recently had a pay cut at work and it made getting by hard. The young couple wanted to give each other the perfect Christmas gift to each other. To be able to afford the gifts, they sacrificed their most prized possessions. Della only managed to save less than two dollars, which wasn’t enough to buy a gift that she thought was worthy of her husband. She had to give up her long brown hair to afford a gift for Jim. Jim had to sell his watch, which was a family heirloom, to afford a gift for Della. However, by selling their possessions, the gifts they receive are useless because they are without the things the new gifts were intended for. Mrs. James Dillingham Young, Della, is the seen as a person with different characteristics. The beginning of the story shows her emotional side. “There was nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it.” (Henry). Her emotions change throughout the story. Della goes from being sad to hopeful of getting money for her hair, excited that she found the perfect gift for Jim, and then worried that her husband wouldn’t like her newly cut short hair.
