While the movie showed some bad weather during the timeframe of the crossing to the battle, it did not accurately portray all of the conditions that the army had to deal with. The boats had to deal with ice floating in the river, during a severe winter storm that produced snow, rain, hail, and sleet with a temperature of 20 degrees. Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey is a coming of age story that filled with suspense and mystery keeping us captivated till the end. Set in the 1960’s in an old mining town if Corrigan, where everyone knows one another. I certainly agree with weartholdcoat’s opinions on the novel, it’s a great thrilling read that keeps you completely hooked. Silvey uses various techniques like narrative and language conventions, theme and Australian context to achieve such a captivating finish.

The grueling battle lasted for hours and long after dark. As shells plunged in from the sea and General Ames struggled with a division that became increasingly disorganized as his regimental leaders and all of his brigade commanders fell dead or wounded. American literature 1865-1914 is an American literary time period that began in 1865 and ended in 1914. This time period was flourished by three distinct features and the first of these features is: The Aftermath of the Civil War. It is estimated that a total of 620,000 Americans were killed in the Civil War, and for what? At the time, we were an America that was divided by one huge issue that ran supreme and it was slavery and the unequal treatment of African Americans. At this time the nation needed to figure a way to unite the North who were against slavery and the South who were for slavery. As Abraham Lincoln says in our Bedford Anthology of American Literature: “No one man has authority to give up the rebellion for any other man, we simply must begin with, and mould from, disorganized and discordant elements,” (4). He is saying that we must not start a new, but rather we need to start from what we had and mould and shape our country into one. In the play The Importance of Being Earnest, there are many types of literary techniques used. One major skill that was seen throughout the dialog is restoration comedy. It is evident all throughout the play, mostly between Jack and Algernon. For these two characters are always battling through a war of wits in attempts to outdo the other. Algernon and Jack constantly bicker, however they maintain a sense of professionalism. During the Victorian era, restoration comedy was widely seen, as it played upon the aspects of ones intelligence. Oscar Wilde had a very unique way of writing, and definitively made use of all the great literary techniques!

Sherwood Anderson's style of writing and conveying are very unique. He adds authenticity to his characters and really portrays them well, so that it feels as if they really exist. In his book Winesburg Ohio, there are many stories broken into parts. Each story has a main character and a problem they are facing, or an obstacle they are overcoming. Many of those stories have some sort of connection in the theme, plot, and what they experience. In the stories, “Hands”, “The Philosopher”, “Godliness”, “Adventure”, and “The Strength of God”, Anderson shows how being surrounded by the wrong people, make you feel like a grotesque, alone, and tempted to give in.

During the Victorian Era, both men and women searched for their ideal type based on the expectations of the Victorian society. However, due to the high demanding standards, many individuals were forced to deceive the people around them and engage in a double life in order to fulfill the desire of their potential partner. If the man or woman were unable to meet the standards of the Victorian society’s expectations, they would be labeled as unsuitable for their partner and would receive no consent from their partner’s family. In the play, the Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde analyzes the effects of society’s expectations on individuals.

Hemmingway had a major impact on the world of writing, and a strong influence on 20th century literature during his lifetime. Hemmingway’s life was full of adventures from around the globe, and these experiences inspired his works of literature. The writing style Hemmingway used was simple and direct, but it makes any reader feel like they are apart of the story. This man made his mark on American Literature, and he will be remembered as one of the most well known authors to have ever lived.
