Abstract
The following analysis evaluates six sources concerning feminism. The six sources analyze what feminism is, where it came from, how it’s changing, and it’s relevance. The research aims to examine whether or not feminism is applicable in today’s society. With such blunt opinions shared based around feminism, the researcher hopes to find a perfect grey area where feminism can both strive and recede. The following literature review divides into two sections with three summary paragraphs, an evaluation paragraph, a reflection paragraph, a comparison paragraph, and a conclusion paragraph. The summary paragraphs serve as brief outlines of each article. The evaluations discuss the sources beneficial qualities, and the reflection covers how the information provided could be used in an argumentative paper. In addition, the comparisons take the evaluation and reflection on each source and compares and contrast the ideas of each article with one another. The researcher found each article diverse and useful in its own way, since feminism is such a subjective and broad topic, there was a broad span of useful articles. Feminism can be viewed in various different ways, and the analysis attempts to display this characteristic by using a very diverse group of ideas. Literature Review of Realistic Feminism
As the world has evolved, so has the general consensus of opinions concerning feminism. I have analyzed six sources which I have summarized, evaluated, reflected upon, and
Janet Lee’s and Susan M. Shaw’s, Women’s Voices Feminist Visions Classic and Contemporary Readings did provide the proper data to support their analyses. Lee and Shaw used sufficient evidence to address their main topic- the analysis of women’s gender studies by examining historical and contemporary writings. In chapter one Lee and Shaw discussed the purpose of women’s studies and examined gender. The ideas of feminism we evaluated, Lee and Shaw explained the negative attributes associated with feminism as well as the history of the gender movement. Women’s studies is a field of study that has been slowly expanding in the academic world sense the 1970’s. Lee and Shaw did provide the results to the data they analyzed. To prove their statements regarding the study of the
Feminism, a term often used to show a movement towards equal political, economic, and cultural opportunities for women is becoming widely used. This movement was supported by many females such as Betty Friedan, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Stanton, and many other ordinary women. It is universally known that the feminist movement came in three waves. The first wave’s purpose was to get equal political power by allowing women to vote. The second wave was more concerned about the differences between the genders, such their roles and working conditions. Last but not least, the third wave, is often regarded as a continuation of the civil rights movements. As this movement spread, a new way of analyzing literature came to live. This is known as seeing
Roxane Gay, author of the article entitled “Bad Feminist”, is a very accomplished American feminist writer. Her publication of “Bad Feminist” in 2012 gained national public attention (1). Feminism, as defined in the dictionary, is “the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes” (2), but Gay explains throughout her article that being a feminist is not just as simple as agreeing with this need for gender equality. The feminist label is too narrow and because of this the feminist movement is breaking apart. In this piece, Gay addresses how our society currently defines feminism and explains why this definition does not encompass everybody that it should.
The true feminists of the 21st century are in a constant struggle to be taken seriously, as their name has been tarnished throughout the years with all the misconceptions they have received. “The Women’s Rights Movement has taken an ugly turn in our society creating more of a divide amongst women and less of a unity of strong females” (Nicole. “The Anti-Feminist Feminist.”). The author of this article explains that the credibility traditional feminist
In this essay I will explore the different schools of feminism such as Marxist, liberal and radical feminism, who share the view that women are oppressed in a patriarchal society but differ in opinion on who benefits from the inequalities. Each school of feminism has their own understanding of family roles and relationships which I will assess through this essay.
The feminist movement of the 1960’s focused solely on the improvement and well- being of women. The idea of Feminism is a critical theory as it is an analytical examination of social conditions and what tools could be utilized to proactively improve these conditions. Overcoming the consistent barriers women had to endure during this era remains prevalent and continues to have psychological effects. In order to strengthen one’s mindset regarding feminism, we must first refer back and understand the intellectual history of the women’s movement and examine areas of how counseling can assist with overcoming these impediments. The Feminist philosophy is the philosophical dimension of intellectual feminism. Many philosophers understand their intellectual history and the history of the women's movement in terms of three "waves."
In choosing for this research project I have decided to challenge the ethical problem of the shortcomings of feminism. There has been much debate over feminism, the questioning of its purpose, its design, its inclusiveness, it is stance on other matters that connect to it. In a quest in finding the shortcomings, and bringing them to light. Using other essays as sources I plan to make this bibliography a journey into the scope not just feminism, but the history of feminism, intersectional feminism, the wage gap, and what defines a feminist. We will take into account of all aspects of feminism and how authors of some essays included have offered their
Feminism has become an ugly word. Some say it does not even live up to its definition anymore. However, the definition remains unchanged in the pages of history. Webster’s Third New International Dictionary’s definition of Feminism reads, “The theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” If one digs deep into this definition, beyond the surface of society’s view on feminism today, one can see that feminism would benefit both sexes. The true ideals of feminism break down gender roles, thus benefitting men, women and future generations.
The definition of “Feminism” is the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men, or in other words, “Feminism is the radical notion that women are people too,” (Cheris Kramarae).Women have gone through periods of worship, to periods of worthlessness, to somewhere in between. Women, a vital component to humanity, are starting to be valued again.

The term ‘feminism’ and ‘feminist’ first started to gain popularity in the 1970s. Starting in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, continued into the 1960s and 1970s, then followed by the 1990s to the twentieth century, feminism and feminist grown across the nation. From clubs and organizations, to readings and speeches, feminist all across the nation, and world, have influenced aspects of our daily lives, including our literature. “Feminist criticism examines the ways in which literature reinforces or undermines the economic, political., social, and psychological oppression of woman” (Tyson 83). In simpler terms, feminist criticism is critiquing literary readings, through the mind of a woman’s opinion of structure and being.
Gender discrimination is a topic that has been debated in our society extensively, through research as well as in informal settings. This has been beautifully portrayed in this article. The author says that many things are under a process of change, the sphere, the earth, jobs, weather, ranks, genders, races and sexes. Females are also changing, and therefore feminisms also require changing. Feminism basically is a set of ideologies and movements intended at establishing, defining, and protective equal economic, political, and social rights for females. It has now gained immense popularity among women (Smith, 1987). Any women do fight for their rights. The article is also intended for all such active females who are the strong supporter of feminism. It is also for those audiences who are themselves female and are struggling in their life for their rights and freedom.
To further my understanding of feminism, I am currently taking the class Introduction to Women’s Gender and Ethnic Studies. During the first unit, I studied more in-depth about different types of feminism, and the feminism waves throughout
Inequality has been an issue throughout history and has affected minorities; as a consequence, there are multiple ideologies and groups that pursue equality. Feminism is a movement that seeks equality between the sexes in all areas (Issit & Flynn). Women have come together to fight for their rights and obtain privileges that were granted only to men. Feminism, according to Quidlen, has worked as a vehicle for change to improve women`s lives. Moreover, it has raised awareness of the issues women face and offered solutions. In spite of all of these improvements and its long history since its inception, feminism still exists and has the same relevance as in the past. However, as with any ideology, people have different perspectives about feminism; just as there are supporters, there are also opponents. Interestingly, while both sides have different perspectives of what equality means, there are ideas and values upon which both groups unintentionally agree. This common ground creates a third perspective; presenting feminism as a more inclusive movement by changing certain aspects of it such as the label “feminism”, in order to show the evolution of this movement. As discussed in the following paragraphs, both pro and anti feminism perspectives have valid arguments that must be explored to reach a solution that satisfies both sides.
The idea of feminism is commonly misconstrued in society as having a pro-female only agenda. Butler, (2011) argues that feminism is simply the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. Based off evidence provided in Bardsley’s
