Janelle Perez 12/4/17 Research article assignment This study on school based drug education provides a test of the comprehensive model of school based prevention. It helps identify possible different effects of this drug initiative (DARE). A DARE study with 1,584 students was done to see the effects of the program on the students behavior and attitude towards drugs(Rosenbaum, pg.3). DARE was showed to have no impact on students, but mixed with other factors, showed some impact on different groups of students. This study is important because a national survey in the 1980s showed that drugs were the biggest problem the U.S had (Rosenbaum,pg.4). This study can not only save society money, but help prevent the youth from taking drugs in the future. This study contributes to our understanding crime and policies. It shows how effective school based drug prevention is. Since controlled longitudinal evaluations of school based drug education is rare, we do not know what works. The practical significance of this study is that school based drug education is still not clear if it has a specific impact or other factors can contribute to it. Some factors may be the media, parents, peers, and society many contribute to the decline of adolescent drug use (Rosenbaum,pg.28). We already know the research documented shows the effectiveness of police crackdown at the neighborhood level is limited and has mixed results(Rosenbaum,pg.4). Many states require schools to have
These numbers reveal that teenagers face an apparent exposure to drugs, and have little trouble getting a hold of some if desired. This article concludes that drug use and its consequences are not stressed enough in the current high school curriculum. The statistics prove that more needs to be done to identify and educate students at risk for drug use.
Teenage drug abuse is an issue that can result from a wide variety of social influences, stressful events, and mental disorders. Drug abuse among adolescents is a troubling issue because it decreases focus, increases the chance of consistency in behavior during adulthood, increases the chances of developing emotional issues, permanently damages the brain, and damages tissues in every system that can lead to death. Previous scientific research has identified that social factors, including the media and peers, play an important role in psychological development and impact the adolescent's decision to start experimenting with substances (Botvin 888). Children, starting as early as elementary school, are being educated on substance abuse. As of 2013, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, D.A.R.E., administers a school-based substance abuse, gang, and violence prevention program in 75 percent of the United States school districts. Since 1983, 70,000 police officers have taught the D.A.R.E. program to approximately 114 million elementary through high school students in the United States alone ("Is the D.A.R.E. Program Good for America's Kids K-12?"). This program is aimed at preventing drug use in elementary, middle, and high school students. A needle-exchange program implicitly encourages the exact opposite message, condoning immoral and illicit behavior. Governments should focus on discouraging drug use, providing more productive treatment for recovery, and punishing drug users instead of supplying the materials to continue their addiction. Young children have the potential to take more risks and must receive a clear message on drugs, which should coincide with the no tolerance policy they are being taught in school with implementation of the D.A.R.E. program. A needle-exchange program is more of a hopeful harm reduction campaign that sends the wrong message to young children and society as a whole. Three decades from now, T.L.O., a student at a New Jersey High School was caught smoking in a school restroom, and was brought to the assistant principal’s office. The 14-years-old teenager denied smoking, so the assistant principal persisted in searching her purse and found cigarettes, and rolling paper which is associated with marijuana (T.L.O. vs. New Jersey). Nothing has changed since then. If you look a little closer, you can see teenagers lying around doing drugs here and there. They are no longer determined to succeed in life; instead all they can think about is where the next supply of cocaine will come from. What has our future come to? Research done by scientists and other professionals provide evidence that substance abuse by teenagers is an ever-growing problem due to teen’s poor judgement, it’s irreparable damage, and inability to compete with drug addiction.

Goggle search said “Drugs are one of the top causes of teen deaths and suicides in the United States.” Drugs have been around for years and each year the death rates and suicide rates have increased dramatically especially in teen students. This is why it is very important that parents teach their kid at an early age about drugs. The Teachers and school staff are trying their best to teach the kids that drugs are not cool. The schools think it is best that all Middle School Students should be drug tested. The drug-testing program serves as a deterrent for middle school students that are encountering drugs of all kinds, including steroids, alcohol and marijuana.
The social problem in the Keepin’ It REAL campaign was drug use in adolescents, specifically seventh grade students (Miller-Day & Hecht, 2013, p. 657). Preteens and teenagers face pressure to use and take drugs from their peers, so this campaign is aimed at learning how students refuse drugs and what ways are the most effective for them to refuse the substances from their peers. This campaign ended up reaching 2 million seventh grade students in 45 countries and educated them about drug refusal narratives from their peers (Miller-Day & Hecht, 2013, p. 657).
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program known as D.A.R.E has become a very widespread and popular program throughout the United States. The program appeals to all ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic lines, which is a large part of the reason why the DARE program has grown exponentially. The program’s basic premise was meant to introduce kids to the danger of drugs, before the drugs got to them. The implementation of the DARE program appeared to be what America needed to begin to put a dent in the war on drugs.

It has been discovered that most people who struggle with drug addiction began experimenting with drugs in their teens. Teenage drug abuse is one of the largest problems in society today and the problem grows and larger every year. Drugs are a pervasive force in our culture today. To expect kids not to be influenced by the culture of their time is as unrealistic as believing in the tooth fairy (Bauman 140). Teens may feel pressured by their friends to try drugs, they may have easy access to drugs, they may use drugs to rebel against their family or society, or they may take an illegal drug because they are curious about it or the pleasure that it gives them.
Along with the mental and physical issues drugs and alcohol can cause, teenagers are also unaware of the legal consequences that come along with being caught with these substances. Being a minor in possession of alcohol or drugs can be charged with hefty fines, and even incarceration. If drugs or alcohol are in possession or being used at school, students can expect to receive a suspension, crossroads, or even expulsion. They can also be removed from any clubs, teams, and certain classes. The only reason students have knowledge of these consequences is from observing the outcome others face after they get caught. At this age, we should know the consequences before an incident occurs
