Adult Fiction is evidently presented in the form of a novel but Shaun Tan breaks away from traditional conventions of a novel format, producing texts that inhabit the shape of a picture book, whether including or excluding written language. However majority of critics have a balanced opinion, commenting on the production of the work and the placement of social issues within the text itself. There is a recurrent motif among critics, that Tan’s work is constantly debating issues that are affecting immigrants, proclaiming that his text is not focusing on one specific denomination but all “problems faced by all migrants, regardless of nationality”(Arizpe, Farrell, McAdam, 199). Tan distinctly wants to bridge the gap between the subject of his work and the reader. He achieves this through his exclusion of language, demonstrating that literature can be accessed to anyone if a common denominator is given, in relation to this text Tan has given image as the common denominator and abandoned the conventional use of language. What we learn today of the worlds conflicts comes from a non-traditional, highly digitalised resources. The accessibility to primary resources is not longer in a neophyte stage. Illustrations and photographic images are an essential role in portraying and assisting opinions whilst also documenting momentous occasions throughout history.
