Mike Rose mentioned many claims throughout Lives on the boundary. He showed the reasons why students suffered, or failed in school. In this book, students were treated negatively because of their differences. Rose also showed how the expectations from society and teachers had negatively affect students and how students failures are due to carelessness of teachers. At the beginning of the book, Rose mentioned many students who suffered school for many reasons. He mentioned Laura, who took his English’s class four times and dropped it because of the fear of making mistakes. Laura’s story showed that teachers didn’t try hard enough to help students overcomes their fear, instead they let them suffered. He also mentioned Bobby, he was a star during high school but felt lost when he came to college. He wasn’t prepared well enough for college and couldn’t complete any of his assignment. The lack of preparation from his high school teachers had failed him. The score that show on Laura’s and Bobby’s test had isolated them from their classmates. The teachers didn’t try to figure out what happened to these kids, instead, they focus on the test score, and removed these kids from their classroom, put them …show more content…
I’ve seen several times in my classes from high school how teachers didn’t show any care to wether a student succeed or not. Some teachers even said rude comments and it made the students felt discourage. Without realizing it, teachers are the reason why students is failing. Many teachers didn’t realized that the way they taught students, had ruined students. There are kids who studied days and nights for a test, but still failed when it’s test time. Why? Because the materials they studied were nothing related to the test. Teachers didn’t realized their teaching style were wrong. They always said that it is the students fault that they failed, but it’s
In has education failed by Ashley Montagu, he states his opinion that education has inadequately lacked teaching student correctly, Affecting their full potential. Mentally Montagu believes that for a person to be mentally healthy they must be able to know how to love and work. Stating that if they aren’t taught to communicate with other their performance drops. But due to outside problems that are something different than in class he think teachers shouldn’t allow outside problems to continue but to distinguish outside problem and find ways to solve those problems. He believe that students aren’t the fault in the system but have been due to lack of work teachers put in.
The students in this track were often labeled as “unruly, and not motivated” and of course the parents and students are faced with embarrassment which can be tragic just from an error this school had made. If Professor Rose had not taken that single Biology course his sophomore year in “Our Lady of Mercy” his educational career as a professor would not have been a success. It is always very important teachers understand the importance and responsibility of their role that is in these student’s everyday lives, they shape the way these students think, and understand everyday education we use. During the essay Ken Harvey mentions that he just wants to be average and considers himself to be below average while Rose is thinking to himself what an absurd comment it was. When an individual is constantly told that he or she is not smart they can’t do this or that it lowers their confidence and they actually start working at that level and not striving for the highest standard. Teachers and or professors have many responsibilities including the most important one which is knowing and making sure the student or child understands every single lesson they teach.
In Rose’s “I Just Wanna Be Average”, readers can determine from what he says that teachers play an integral role in the educations of students. When others are teaching you what to do, it becomes easier to understand; when others are not teaching you, it becomes harder to understand. You can tell how essential a teacher is to a student if you were to read Rose’s narrative and see that: students float to expectations, if teachers don’t expect anything of you they won’t help you, and how beneficial it is to have a teacher who challenges you to be better.
There were many diverse aspects to this book. Most of this book is a recall from either the main character, or one of his students. This book is intended to open people’s eyes to see that in order to change the world we must first change ourselves. Being able to go through this story and see the mistakes, and the good decisions, teachers in Michie’s life have made, has taught me that the best way to teach is through love, justice, cultural empathy and imagination. Some of the points brought up in this book include the positive and negative sides of physical contact with a student, classification/stereotyping, race, gangs, police brutality/lack of justice, and children not being able to escape peer pressure.
Rose writes about his high school educational experiences after he is inadvertently placed in vocational education when the results from his placement tests are confused with another student named Rose. Vocational education is a "euphemism for the bottom level." Rose went to school at a time when tracking, or sorting students by the results of placement tests was common in public education. Rose recounts his experiences in vocational education in order to elaborate on the problems of such system. The author calls the vocational track "a place for those who are just not making it, a dumping ground for the disaffected." To further aggravate Rose's situation his parents lack the capacity or understanding of the educational system in order to question his inappropriate placement. "How would someone like Tommy Rose, with his two years of Italian schooling, know what to ask? And what sort of pressure could an exhausted waitress apply? The error went undetected, and I remained in the vocational track for two years." However the most significant issue raised
If the student fails, the teacher fails. If the teacher cannot compel the student to do something, to use his own mind to solve a problem, then he has failed because the student was not successful.
Olson’s premises for the book are that engagement in learning is the key to a happy life and that school separates many individuals from that possibility. School practices that wound and make students hesitant learners have to be investigated so they can be changed. If we understand what school wounds are, why they occur and what can be done about it, we don’t need to harbor these wounds forever.
In the girl’s case, she challenged the boundaries that was against her in education and obtained acceptance to different high schools. If compared to the Separate and Unequal film, Omarina challenged the “us” versus “them” boundary work as she received the necessary assistance from the teachers, counselors, and principal in helping her improve her education. It was due to the Balfanz’s theories that were put to test in the school system that allowed the faculty to assist students that were falling behind in their classes. It allowed the students in improving their grades and chances in their education. However, in Separate and Unequal, the school system had no program or system that could have improved the student’s education eventually leading to failing grades and education of the students. This leads to the plan of a new school and city apart from the current city and school. Without the help of the system that was implemented for Omarina’s school, she would have been unable to obtain such a life chance in furthering her education. In addition, she is breaking the “us” versus “them” boundary work as she is laying out her own boundaries among her new life chances. Nevertheless, the film reveals a different perspective of boundary work as the young girl pave a way into a different community of rich, upper middle class and upper class
For some, stepping out of their comfort zone can be a difficult situation to go through. The time I attended Maine Youth Leadership, a four-day seminar where students from across the state of Maine are recognized, and develop their leadership skills, was easily stepping out of my comfort zone. I later realized the impact it put on me.
Growing up as a child school has Always been a place is for learning, but only the ones that dedicated themselves to study hard, succeed in life. Unfortunately, some students lack the motivation to concentrate on their studies and they start engaging in other activities such as drug abuse and partying. Teachers fail to get concerned and begin to grant diplomas to unqualified students (Sherry,03). The students graduate with a lifetime disadvantaged. Sherry's argues that a lot of high school graduates go through school without gaining complete literacy. While Mary Sherry states students are graduating without fulfilling their fundamental requirements. She points out that the education in this system is ineffective since it hands out meaningless diplomas (Sherry, 01). Over time,
of teaching is not effective on a student, but neither is at fault for this.
Students who seek some sort of higher education, tend to do better when they are in the mindset of actually learning, not just getting a passing grade. In other words, students are literally in charge of the final outcome as their collegiate career comes to an end. This isn’t to say that the teacher does not have a very important role in that outcome, only that the student has the power to change his/her train of thought and focus on the thing that matters most which is learning, not necessarily grades.
The job of a teacher is for them to educate their students and to listen to what their class has to say. The job of a teacher is also to prepare students for their futures and to assist them when they ask for help. When a teacher is not doing their job, it’s not only hard for their students to learn, but it can damage how they feel about themselves. When I entered high school I never expected to think of myself as a failure, but by the end of my junior year I was completely defeated because of a teacher that did not do their job.
The teachers of today’s society all seek to provide students with a higher education each year, yet many are unsuccessful because of the lack of diverse teaching styles. Instead of creating a teaching style that can apply to all students’ teachers settle for a set of standardized coursework. This however leads to the destruction of the students GPA and chance for a better life through college admission. When one classifies teachers it is often obvious the lack of effort from many teachers and the hard work of others. The first group of teachers to appear is the hard heads; these are the teachers who no matter what are always “right”, and refuse to take feedback from the students on the coursework. The next group is the sweethearts which are the teachers whom are very kind to their students, but are huge pushovers that give in to all student requests. The third group of teachers that appear in school are the jerks, this group of teachers target students in the classroom and proceed to bring a student down and encourage the classmates to hop on the band wagon with them. Finally, the last group of teachers is the hard workers who go out of their way to help better their student’s education. Though not all teachers are bad, the lack of diversity in teaching styles results in the loss of opportunity for students to better their education. When the school year begins, students lack the background knowledge of their teacher
Sometimes, college faculties do contain poor teachers who are shirking their responsibilities. The best strategy to prevent bad teaching, however, is not to focus on the output of this flawed process, but rather to look at the educational process itself. Shining a light on the work that students do in their classes would provide the “telling evidence” that Bok said would make a difference.
