Living the Life of a Greaser
Heres a story about two gangs that have a major conflict based on looks and how much money you have. In my opinion I think the Greasers had it harder then the Soc's. Greasers were in the poor range while Soc's have money and our the “rich people”. Soc's go around looking for Greasers to fight and jump them while their all alone or in groups just because they don't have any money like themselves. Greasers grew up in the hood with ragged clothes and cars that don't compete with the Soc's. Greasers compared to Soc's are like cats and dogs. They both despise each other. Since Greasers are poor, they get looked at differently.
Greasers don't really have money. Greasers mainly grew up with money issues and many others have had tragedies, but Soc's always make it worse by picking fights and starting conflict. “It bothered me because we live in kind of a lousy neighborhood and our house isn't real great”. This shows that many Greasers felt like they would get judged because they didn't think their standards weren't high enough like the Soc's. This is

Soc's have lots of issues with money and their parents suspecting high standard from them. “Most soc's are not cared about at home, so they turn bad and do bad things”. Soc's don't get enough attention and so when they see the Greaser's they get upset seeing how everyone is a family and stick together. Soc's may have a harder life because of high standards that can't happen or maybe their parents always doubt them. Their not the ones that are poor and getting jumped every single day though, but why take your anger out on the Greasers? There's nothing really wrong with the Soc's lives. They may have some family problems but nothing compared to the Greasers. Greasers struggle more then the Soc's because they've have had so much happen to them from the
First of all, some Greasers have problems because of the involvement of gangs and the unbiased law towards them. In the article “The Allure of Gangs”, the text states “kids who join gangs feel alienated by their parents...want to feel like they are part of some kind of family”(“The Allure of Gangs” on page 40). This is important because the deprivation of parenting caused the joining of gangs. This shows that Greasers are more emotional and just want to be cared. In addition, the author writes “That's why people don't ever think to blame the Socs and are always ready to jump on us. We look hoody and they look decent. It could be just the other
Greasers are “read in between the lines”, so they are conceived as inadequate. Since the socs live a nice lifestyle, they have an advantage of an automatic good reputation. In chapter 1 Ponyboy remarks,”Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped...We get jumped by the
Socs are expected to be rich and to have things like “... money, cars and futures.” says Ponyboy. They’re expected to have big houses, wear nice clothes, talk nice, they were basically expected to be perfect, but at the same time heartless and mean. Greasers were expected to be tough, mean, and poor. They were expected to be the exact opposite of the Socs, they didn’t even live on the West Side, where Socs lived. They were accused of stealing and some Greasers get treated differently
Since the isolation between the Greasers and Socs are based upon stereotypes from their appearances and reputations. For example, on page 3 it describes, “Not like the Socs, who jump Greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and asset to society the next. Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in a while.” The separation between the Greasers and Socs is clearly from the differences in living
In a place where rich and poor, good and bad are fighting with each other. The Greasers had a rougher life than the Socs. The Greasers had a rough life because they were poor and they always get in trouble by the Socs.Greasers are people that can’t afford almost anything and People blame them for doing bad stuff always. The Socs are west side rich kids who basically can own almost everything.People think that Greasers are bad juvenile kids who always do bad things, but in reality they are just poor people that had to do bad stuff because they have to.
The Socs are expected to stay in school unlike the Greasers were it is not uncommon to drop out of school. The Socs are supposed to go to college and graduate with a degree and get a well-paying job. The greasers drop out of school before they can even think of college and if they do graduate high school most do not have enough money to go to a good college. It is mandatory for the Socs to get good grades but the Greasers do not have to get good grades and usually end up failing every
Socs, to greasers are stuck-up, richer and have more perfect lives. But that is quite far from the truth. "All bob wanted was for someone to say 'No' and they never did. They never did. That was what he wanted [...] to have somebody lay down the law, set the limits, give him something solid to stand on.
They are just walking around when some Socs go after them. One of them says, “’You know what a greaser is? White trash with long hair.’” This just shows that the Socs don’t think much of the greasers and just stereotype them as poor kids that have long hair. They don’t even know them and don’t get to know them as just other kids.
The Greasers have always believed that the Socs were just rich brats that got whatever they wanted, and they thought of themselves as the rundown
In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the Socs are the ones to blame for all of the problems. After all they are the cause of the rumble. The Socs are no good drunk 24/7 idiots who need to turn their ego down, and intelligence up. They screw up MANY times in the book. Yah yah, greasers are not perfect, but at least they have some common sense. And I’ll tell you why the greasers are innocent and the Socs are not.
One of the main vs man conflict in the Outsiders is the rival between the greasers and the socs. The greasers are the east side boys who " steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations". The greasers, due to their family background and physical appearance, are being stereotyped as individuals who are poor and are provided with fewer opportunities than others. On the other hand, the socs, are " the west-side rich kids" who come from affluent backgrounds and" likes to jump greasers and throw beer blasts for kicks". In the eyes of the public, the Socs are the social elites whereas the greasers are considered the less privileged, second-class citizens.
The Greasers are "poorer than the Socs and the middle class... almost like hoods; we steal things and rive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in a while. " In contrast, the Socs are "the jet set, the West-side rich kids," who "jump greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next. "In Chapter 3, a conversation between Ponyboy and Cherry shows the difference between the two groups that goes beyond money. Cherry says, "You greasers have a different set of values. You're more emotional.
The Socs mostly came from houses with two parents, drive fine cars, wear fashionable clothing, and even given the freedom they wanted. Instead of focusing on all the goods that the Socs had, they decided to focus on their hatred towards the Greasers. They wanted to jump the Greasers and do whatever it took to cause conflict. “You Greasers have a different set of values. You're more emotional. We're sophisticated--- cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us” (Hinton 33). The Greasers feel emotions, but the Socs are too cool to feel anything. Instead of the Socs taking advantage of everything they had, the Socs got editorials in the newspaper for being a public disgrace one day and a benefit to society the next day. Randy and Cherry seem to be the only ones to realize the error of the Socs ways. Cherry feels sympathy for the Greasers even after her boyfriend, Bob, was killed.
The difference between the Greasers and Socs in the society is the Greasers treated unequally and criticized for being poor. The Socs are bullying, criticizing, and intimidating the Greasers based on the economic level. Greasers have unequal lifestyles, attitudes, and financial situations, but still live in the same world, beneath the same sun as the Socs (Hinton 18), but repeat the same actions toward the Socs in a way of fighting back and sticking together.
There were conflicts between the Socs that conflicted with the greasers. They were two opposite groups that didn't get along. The Socs, "the jet-set...West-side rich kids, wear madras shirts, smell of English leather, and drive new sports cars..." (6). Socs were rich, while greasers were low class. "Soc" is an abbreviation of the Socials, which are the West-side rich kids. Socs had a better reputation than the greasers.
