The tones that are miserable and hopeful throughout the poem prove that the meaning is hope. For example, the original tone miserable is shown on line 10, “I turned in the black ditch, loathing the storm.” (Sassoon 10.2) The tone shows that the author is currently miserable because the author hates the storm, and is disgusted by it making him miserable. Different from the last stanza of the poem. For instance, on lines 30-31 the text states, “I say that He was Christ, who wrought to bless, all groping things with freedom bright as air.” (Sassoon 30-31.4) This transition from the beginning of the poem to the end is important because this portrays how the tone changes to hope and the author is no hopeful during one of his lowest times.
