An effective children’s book is one that leaves an impression on the reader as well as leaves them wanting more. When children are first being introduced to reading, they want books to appeal to their level and interests. Number the Stars, written by Lois Lowry, is an example of a book that is a stepping-stone to longer and more challenging books but still challenges the younger reader. This chapter book is set in the time during the Second World War and focuses on Jewish families that are fighting to escape Nazi lead Germany. Number The Stars, focuses on a girl named Annemarie that is forced to show courage and strength to help her best friend, Ellen, and her family to escape to Sweden so they are not caught by German soldiers. Annemarie is …show more content…
The goal an author has when writing a book for younger readers is to make it easier to read but still be a challenge. First, Lois Lowry does this by having larger typeface as well as not having an extended amount of words fill each page. IN larger chapter books, the amount of words on each page can be intimidating. With Number The Stars, the book is still a chapter book but does not have as many words per page. This makes it so the book is not as intimidating compared to what a longer, more difficult chapter book may be. However, this is still a book that can help develop a younger reader. Throughout the book, Lowry uses more complex sentences that readers could have some trouble with at first. One of these sentences includes, “Sometimes it was evening, with long, frightening shadows, so that Kirsti, listening, would snuggle closer and wrap her arms around Annemarie (Lowry 109). Within this complex sentence, there are more commas and pauses that make reading the sentence correctly more difficult. Having the opportunity to read sentences like the one mentioned could better prepare a reader for harder books to come. Although the design of Number The Stars is a reason it is impactful, it allows for a connection to the reader …show more content…
For students, Number The Stars is centered on a ten-year-old girl named Annemarie. The book tells about the struggles that she goes through and how she shows courage to overcome her doubts to do unthinkable things. When the main character is close to the age of the reader, they have the chance to make comparisons, even if the book is not necessarily real life events. It is easy to make personal connections to characters that are similar to reader rather than different. It can be difficult for a young reader to identify with a story about an extremely old character. If these connections can be made between the reader and the content, the book becomes engaging and worth reading. Failure to find books that are relatable can lead to children never wishing to read. In the case of Number The Stars, Lowry has a younger child as the center and allows for children to relate to it. Similar to this, the theme of the story is something that makes Number The Stars an effective book for
think that it allows the reader to create imagery whilst reading, and I feel that in
The book “Stargirl” tells a story about a homeschooled girl that meet new people and how the world the surrounds her work. But, this girl is not an ordinary girl, something deep in her character is making her different than other people.
For Stargirl, it let her true identity shine through. Another direct quote from the book that justifies the theme is "One morning we had a rare rainfall. It came during her gym class. The teacher told everyone to come in. On the way to the next class they looked out the windows. Stargirl was still outside. In the rain. Dancing" (Spinelli, page 11). This quote supports the theme because to Stargirl, this was a very typical thing for her to do. A final quote from the book that justifies the theme is "Star people are rare. You will be lucky to meet another" (Spinelli, page 177). This quote supports the theme because it describes what Stargirl's true identity is. Stargirl identifies as a 'star person'. I would recommend this text to a friend for three specific reasons. First, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fiction, young adult literature, and children's literature. Second, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Jerry Spinelli's work. Third, I would recommend this book to anyone who is an avid reader, like myself, looking for an excellent book. I believe the overall message of this book is "Be unique". This message fits the theme of "Search for Identity", because Stargirl found
This helps Junior overcome adversity by Junior having a thirst for knowledge. I say this because in the book it said on page 31 “my school and my tribe is so poor and sad that we have to study from the same dang books our parents studied from. That is the absolutely the saddest thing in the world.” What this Is saying is Junior wants to learn new things, but the information they have in the school is too old. Also in the book it said on page 31 “ decrepit geometry book hit my heart with the force of a nuclear bomb.
Throughout the novel Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, several topics across the novel contribute to the overall theme. From identity, conformity to bullying, the topics of Stargirl cover everything under the Mica sun. Conformity is touched after everyone in Mica Area High School is described as conformists, blending into one another. Identity is challenged by Stargirl as she breaks away from conformity. Bullying makes its debut after the kids at MAHS reject Stargirls quirky ways. Overall, the Stargirl novel puts a fresh take on the underlining theme most people aren’t true to themselves unless they are confident.
An unknown author once stated, “Bad decisions make great stories.” This is debatable because in the book Number the Stars, Annemarie made a great decision and it altered the story for the better. Annemarie should have copied Kirsti to escape the soldiers for three reasons: because Kirsti was cute, because Kirsti was still sheltered, and because there was so much at stake. The first reason Annemarie should have copied Kirsti to escape the soldiers is because Kirsti was cute.
Stargirl was another fantastic book Jerry Spinelli. He added interesting characters, such as, Leo the quiet and shy one, Stargirl unique and fun one, Dori Dilson Stargirl only friend, Archie the wise and elderly one, Kevin Leo’s friend that likes the stoplight, and Hillari Kimble the popular bratty one. This book takes place in MICA, Arizona. Now, in paragraph one I will discuss the plot of Stargirl. Next, I will talk about the theme in Stargirl. Finally, I will evaluate Jerry Spinelli`s job on the novel Stargirl.
Number the Stars is a well written and historical book. the book is interesting because it takes place in a very special time in history. It's about two Danish girls during the German Occupation of Denmark during World War II. A main part of the story is when the German High Command orders the Danish Gestapo to arrest all the Jews in Copenhagen. At the End Anamarie helps her friend Ellen escape the Nazis and succeeds.
A Thousand Splendid Suns is a novel that is also a page-turner due to its suspense. The suspense in this book has you gripping the edge of your seat as you fathom what might happen next and what choices Mariam and Laila will pursue. On page 52 of the novel, Mariam has the decision of sealing the rest of her life to a horrid man or being a burden to the person that was meant to love and want her. The little moments will have the readers engrossed into the novel that the suspense has to die down before the story can be put on pause for another night. In addition, the gut-wrenching and riveting break in the novel after the “flash of white” was almost painful as the suspense was in its high and we readers were left with a temporary cliffhanger.
Book 2: The illustrations are the only thing in this story that keeps the reader intrigued. Without them you would not have a story at all, just random words that have no rhyme or reason to them. Furthermore, if you did not have the words in the book it would be easy to tell where the story is going and help you predict what is happening on the page. It is almost like the creator of the story wants the reader to use their imagination and create their own story by simply looking at the pictures of the
Readers are able to understand the love between one another as they view the affectionate friendships within the book and the love one has for their child. They can also recognize the experiences of poverty as they see it’s effects on characters’ lives and how it breaks down personal relationships. Finally, readers are also able to understand the experience of domestic abuse as they read about physical abuse driven by superiority and verbal abuse used dishearten one. In the end, people cannot experience everything, but only the events that they undertake. As people can learn from other experiences however, with the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, people are able to experience different events from the perspective of the characters that may not be familiar to
This allows the child to read the book and understand the content without being confused or over stimulated with information. From this analysis, the content of the book is effective and should be used because it is accurate and in the correct scope. It is easily understood without being too simple that children dismiss it because it is for earlier aged children. Although the content is a main piece of the puzzle, the way the content is organized is significant as
This catches a person’s eye because it is bright in a mostly dark colored cover, and this immediately adds credibility to the book because it highlights an award extremely important in literature.
It gave me a well written perspective into the real world and helped prevent me to being blindsided by the sometimes unfair Earth. It tells us how reality is commanded by the laws responsible for our very existence. As a result of this, we see our hopes and our dreams slowly but surely crumble away as the real world clips our wings and we descend back down to earth. Faced with such gloom, there comes a time we want to lie beside that person we love or care for and pretend everything is as simple as our young minds used to
The novel was written with such clarity and emotion, it is hard not to love. Because of this, young adults who love action should read the novel. There is some parts to the story that are not appropriate for younger
