An effective children’s book is one that leaves an impression on the reader as well as leaves them wanting more. When children are first being introduced to reading, they want books to appeal to their level and interests. Number the Stars, written by Lois Lowry, is an example of a book that is a stepping-stone to longer and more challenging books but still challenges the younger reader. This chapter book is set in the time during the Second World War and focuses on Jewish families that are fighting to escape Nazi lead Germany. Number The Stars, focuses on a girl named Annemarie that is forced to show courage and strength to help her best friend, Ellen, and her family to escape to Sweden so they are not caught by German soldiers. The goal an author has when writing a book for younger readers is to make it easier to read but still be a challenge. First, Lois Lowry does this by having larger typeface as well as not having an extended amount of words fill each page. IN larger chapter books, the amount of words on each page can be intimidating. With Number The Stars, the book is still a chapter book but does not have as many words per page. This makes it so the book is not as intimidating compared to what a longer, more difficult chapter book may be. However, this is still a book that can help develop a younger reader. Throughout the book, Lowry uses more complex sentences that readers could have some trouble with at first. One of these sentences includes, “Sometimes it was evening, with long, frightening shadows, so that Kirsti, listening, would snuggle closer and wrap her arms around Annemarie (Lowry 109). Within this complex sentence, there are more commas and pauses that make reading the sentence correctly more difficult. Having the opportunity to read sentences like the one mentioned could better prepare a reader for harder books to come. For students, Number The Stars is centered on a ten-year-old girl named Annemarie. The book tells about the struggles that she goes through and how she shows courage to overcome her doubts to do unthinkable things. When the main character is close to the age of the reader, they have the chance to make comparisons, even if the book is not necessarily real life events. It is easy to make personal connections to characters that are similar to reader rather than different. It can be difficult for a young reader to identify with a story about an extremely old character. If these connections can be made between the reader and the content, the book becomes engaging and worth reading. Failure to find books that are relatable can lead to children never wishing to read. In the case of Number The Stars, Lowry has a younger child as the center and allows for children to relate to it.
