In Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson, the author creatively develops the story of different individuals living in Ohio at the turn of the century. The wide multitude of characters developed throughout the twenty four stories in the complete piece, all have lives slightly deformed by the loneliness and isolation they feel. His unique characterization by uniting the seemingly different stories through a common theme create an intense impact as a whole that immerses the reader in the peculiar lives of the community’s inhabitants. The first story, The Book of the Grotesque, serves as a “prologue” to the story, even though it is not addressed as such. The main character, a nameless elderly writer, describes his visions of these different individuals in relation to his theory about …show more content…
The reader by the end of the piece can assume that each story is drawn from a character of this unnamed author. This first story introduces many of the common themes to be included throughout the story including isolation and lives corrupted by loneliness, as characterized by the author through the narrator. In the story Surrender, the characterization of Louise Bentley encompasses the carried theme of loneliness. Not only is Louise somewhat alienated from her family due to her lack of relationship with her father, she is “stuck” in a failing marriage due to her impulsive craving for love at a young age. We see her character turned bitter and angry as a result of her life choices. The reader essentially experiences a “slice” of each character's life, in an effort to understand how their particular isolation has impacted their life. In a story later in Winesburg, Loneliness, we see a character affected by his loneliness to the point of near
In his novel, 1984, George Orwell places a thirty-nine-year-old man, Winston Smith, in a realm where the ruling powers have complete control over their citizens. The inhabitants of this dystopia are expected to have absolute loyalty to that of “Big Brother,” the face of the government. The plot follows Winston’s rebellion against the world’s leaders and their policies. According to his perspective, Winston is alone in his disapproval of the “Party,” which is the term allotted to the followers of “Big Brother.” This solitude ignites hope in Winston that after all, he is not isolated in his beliefs.
Whether it be losing your best friend, a soldier, or simply unable to find someone, soldiers will experience any type of Isolation and Loneliness. In “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, Loneliness and Isolation is not only a feeling in the story, but a motif/symbol. It was used as a imaginary object the soldiers carried. Isolation and Loneliness was a dangerous thing. “One night they start hearing voices. Like at a cocktail party. That’s what it sounds like, this big swank gook cocktail party somewhere out there in the fog….. “‘The guys can’t cope. They lose it. They get on the radio and report enemy movement - a whole army, they say - and they order up the firepower’”(O’Brien, 70-71). Being alone had caused them to hallucinate. Moreover,
In life, everyone wants to have somebody they can call a friend. The unfortunate reality of this is that at some point in time, almost every person will experience loneliness. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, deals with the hardships of two friends who put their belief in a giant pipe dream. The book follows George and Lennie’s troubled and laborious life until their plans go very awry. “King of Hoboes, Arvel Pearson”, by Errol Lincoln Uys, is a nonfiction text which overviews Arvel Pearson’s life as a professional hobo. This includes a detailed version of what it was like to be a hobo in the time period known as the Great Depression and provides an idea of
Loneliness is a personal choice of not wanting to interact with society. Loneliness can hurt your health. Not having not having anyone to talk or vent to can cause anxiety. Loneliness can also be forced. For young people loneliness is mostly forced. This is due to bullying.

Human beings are social creatures. To exist, we require interactions with others. Studies have shown isolation can have detrimental effects on a person's well being. Therefore, when someone chooses to go against human nature by isolating themselves, there are often underlying reasons that need to be examined.
Isolation—shutting off a problem or memory that was difficult or threatening and removing the emotion behind it.
Contrary cases are clear examples of what is not the concept (Gilmartin, Grota, & Sousa, 2013). An example of a contrary case of social isolation is the individual who loves to be to him or her self. She enjoys being along, she is a loner and only limits her social interactions to the necissities. She is not socially isolated becase she electively prefers to isolate herself for her own satisfaction and peace of mind. When hospitalized she does not want any guess and or visotrs. She enjoys being alone in her hospital room.
Some additional resources I would suggest to help alleviate the client’s social isolation are going to senior centers, meetup groups, going to city libraries, getting involved by becoming a volunteer, a mentor, going to a meditation program, and activities that give them ideas of how to keep them occupant. (Science care, 2015). All these resources are very helpful for those who are feeling lonely. They offer different activities, events, exercise classes, ways to meet new people, interact with others, online websites that have news of what happening in the world, or even to sign as a volunteer to stay active, becoming a mentor and help students with assignments or teach technology classes. Also, a mediation program will help by lowering the
"Friends wanted" is a new research by psychologists. It mentioned about the health risks of loneliness and the benefits of strong social connections. While research on relationships has skirted adult friendships. They are tending to focus on adolescent friendships and adult romances. Psychologist agree that the importance of strong social connections throughout life is gaining scientific clout, having been linked with such benefits as a greater pain tolerance, a stronger immune system, and a lower risk of depression and early death. According to psychologist Andrew Steptoe, PhD, of the University College London and colleagues found that, both feeling lonely and being socially isolated raised the risk of death. People do not have friends. They always stay at home. They do not want to have new relationships. This is abnormal idea. Indeed, if you live far from your family, you should have some new friends near your place. It is good idea because you should need their help sometime. For example, a lack of friends is not simply an inconvenience when you want a movie partner or a ride to the hospital. Most research indicates that feeling isolated is more dangerous than being isolated. Psychologist John Cacioppo, PhD and co-author of the 2008 book "Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection." In one 2012 study, he and
John Steinbeck, author Of Mice and Men, paints a whole world of lonesomeness that creates an inevitable obstacle at every corner of life. Steinbeck lives through the characters of his story explaining the concept he perceives of loneliness. The way the characters talk, live, and even interact with the world and each other forms a world of isolation and solitude. Steinbeck integrates his ideas together to form a main theme of loneliness, one who has no friends or company, that none of the characters can avoid.
To be lonely is an easy thing, being alone is another matter entirely. To understand this, first one must understand the difference between loneliness and being alone. To be alone means that your are not in the company of anyone else. You are one. But loneliness can happen anytime, anywhere. You can be lonely in a crowd, lonely with friends, lonely with family. You can even be lonely while with loved ones. For feeling lonely, is in essence a feeling of being alone. As thought you were one and you feel as though you will always be that way. There are many different factors that can cause loneliness and isolation in a person’s life. Many of these factors are present throughout Of Mice and Men. The environment and the people who surround that person can really impact the quality of life one lives. Although isolation occurs when a person separates themselves from others physically, a person can also be isolated inside their own minds, even with others around them. In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, Symbolism, imagery, and tone are used to show how isolation and loneliness shapes the lives of several characters.
While studying various short stories, there are obvious and apparent elements that can be analyzed to reveal rich undercurrents of theme. To better comprehend the intentions of an author, the comparison of two stories and the likeness of their themes may be explored. It can be concluded that a better understanding is achieved when the theme is isolated in each work and a connection is established. This can be seen in works such as Miss Brill by Katherine Mansfield and A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner. Although these two stories significantly differ in tone and in plot, the theme of loneliness is heavily portrayed throughout the entirety of each. From the direct characterization of Miss Brill in her lonesome existence, to the more severe case of loneliness that Emily Grierson suffers, loneliness presents itself as a lurking, yet dominating, theme.
