One of the characters that shows loneliness is Curley’s wife. She is lonely because she is the only woman on the ranch. She said, “Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely” (86). Because Curley does not like her talking to the other men and she has no women to talk to, she is all alone. Another reason why she is lonely is because George wont let Lennie talk to her . She said, “ Ain’t i got a right to talk to nobody? Whatta they i am, anyways? You’re a nice guy. I don’t know why i cant talk to you. I ain’t doin no harm to you‘’ (87-88). For the same reason, Curley doesn’t let talk to other men , she cause too much trouble. As i have noted, reason why she is lonely she said ‘’ i don’t like Curley ‘’ (89).
(Steinbeck, 87). This means that Curley’s wife is lonely because Curley doesn’t allow her to talk to the other men, but he also doesn’t talk to her himself. This is significant because Curley not taking care of his wife and being mean to her is what causes Curley’s wife to sneak out to the barn and talk to Lennie. As a result, Curley could be held responsible for Lennie’s death. However, Curley’s wife is still more responsible because she tempted Lennis with her looks and how she spoke to him.
While the men saw her as a tramp for what she wore, Curley's wife saw herself as female who believed she was an equal with men and the only way she could prove that was by expressing herself with the clothing. Curley's wife knew that the only way to set herself apart from the housewives that still accepted the old ways was by standing up to the men. However, her course towards women's equality could also set her up for loneliness. The men see her as trouble for not acting like a customary wife and the women in the countryside could dislike her for trying to be out of the norm. This is present when Curley's wife tries to talk with Lennie but Lennie responds with," George says I ain't to have nothing to do with you- talk to you or
This is how badly Crooks didn’t want lennie in there and how badly he wanted to be alone. It is true that she married Curley to be able to talk to someone and have someone there to talk to. However, Curley takes all of his time with work and his friends. Obviously they all have work to do.
She is a lonely woman. The reason Curley’s wife wants attention from everybody is become of the lack of love she feels. When she tries to talk to Lennie he denies her. She asks “Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody, I get awful lonely.”
While talking to Lennie in the barn, Lennie disregards what she is saying and keeps to himself. Because of that Curley’s Wife lashes out and asks “Ain’t I got a right to talk to nobody? Whatta they think I am, anyways? You’re a nice guy. I don’t know why I can’t talk to you?(98)” Curley’s Wife obviously hides the fact that she wants this, but she did make it clear that she can’t stand being seen as a dangerous sexual object and just want to talk. Text from the books also shows that she’s far more deep than what most people see and has her own aspirations and
Curley’s wife was so lonely that no matter what, she would talk to Lennie and push him, inevitably leading to a tragedy. In the novel Curley’s wife says, “‘I get lonely,” she said. ‘You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad. How’d you like not to talk to anybody?” (Steinbeck 87). She is so lonely that she is extremely desperate to talk to someone. Instead of finding a good way to deal with her loneliness she keeps pushing and pushing Lennie until eventually something bad did happen. Lennie kills Curley’s wife because she kept pushing him and he didn’t know what to do, then Lennie inevitably gets killed for her actions. The second example for this reason is when Curley’s wife says, “‘Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely”’ (Steinbeck 86). This again shows how lonely she was and how much she wanted to talk to someone. Her loneliness led to backlash from Lennie. After what he had done, he was killed. Curley’s wife’s loneliness killed
She wanted to talk to the most dim witted person in the ranch. However, Lennie didn't want to have a conversation with her because he thought it would cause problems. But Curley's wife was so lonely and desperate to talk with someone. She also made the point that she only could talk with Curley, "You can talk to people, but I can't talk with nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad" (Steinbeck 85).
Loneliness and exclusion from society hurts and affects everyone; the emotional strain a person endures from it creates the image they present to others, but deep down they are not the display image they manufacture. As an illustration, while opening up to Lennie in the barn Curley’s wife states, “I get lonely… You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad.
She strikes up conversation with Lennie who is wary of her because of George warning him of her and when he tells her such, “Her face grew angry. “Wha’s the matter with me?” she cried. “Ain’t I got a right to talk to nobody? Whatta they think I am, anyways? You’re a nice guy. I don’t know why I can’t talk to you. I ain’t doin’ no harm to you.” ” (87-88). Curley’s wife does not have any other women on the farm to keep her company and the men disregard her because of her marriage to the boss’ son, Curly. Her married status means trouble to the men and that is the reason many stay away from her. Furthermore, the significance of the fact that she does not have her own name proves that she is just someone’s possession and not worthy of anyone’s time. This keeps Curly’s wife isolated in every way possible for she has nobody who will give her the time of the
Friendship 8: Curley's wife tries repeatedly to assure Lennie that it's okay for him to talk to her. Like most of the characters in the book, she also feels a need for companionship. Her self-centered and aggressive husband does not fill this need.
An example of her meanness is shown when she is in crooks room and says to him,” Well, you keep your place then, nigga. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny,”(81). Her talking about getting him hung is a horrific thing to say. It proves that she is a very cruel person. But, all she really wants to do is to sit down and have a chat with someone because she is lonely. This is show when she is talking to Lennie and says,” I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely,”(80). She talks about how nobody is willing to talk to her because they're afraid of Curley and how it gets terribly lonely. All in all, Curley’s wife is a very lonesome and being terrible to people doesn't help one
As Lennie is trying to push Curley’s wife away, she states, “Why can’t I talk to you?”. I never get to talk to anyone. I get awfully lonely.” (Steinbeck 86). Curley’s wife is saying that she is not really seen as a person; no one would go to talk to her for a conversation like George and Lennie may, so she would get lonely with no social interaction.
One reason why Curley's wife is lonely is because her newlywed husband never pays attention to her and is always out of town or working. He eaves her in the house and she doesn't have anyone to talk to. “Well, I ain't giving you no trouble. Think I don't like to talk to somebody ever’ once in awhile? Think I like to stick in that house all the time?”
This caused her to feel very alone and scared because she does not want to upset her husband. Not only does she feel alone but the last quote proves very well that Lenni also does. He doesn’t talk to anyone because George is scared he will get in trouble. So both Lenni and Curley’s wife are directed to not talk to anyone because the person that tells them not to is scared of the
However, when she notices George and Lennie, Curley's wife claims she is "lookin' for Curley". Inferring she is cautious and reserved towards George and Lennie.
