Loneliness In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Loneliness is a wicked disease. It can cause someone to turn cold towards the world or lash out in unexpected ways. Although this may be true for the most part, loneliness also has a way of causing someone to become numb to it and hide it away. John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men, is set in a time where many people were stuck in an endless cycle of being lonely. This heart wrenching novel has a major theme of loneliness that sadly shines through in many of the characters. Curley’s wife, a major character in the story, is a prime example of loneliness. She is known around the ranch as a “tramp” to the men which makes for a difficult time getting a conversation out of one of them. He is mistreated because of his race which is stated a few times in the novel. As Crooks himself said, “Cause I'm black. They play cards in there but I can’t because I’m black.” (pg. 68). He gives a simple response to Lennie’s question about his separation from the other men. This can be seen as a reality check for Lennie. While this seems to be new information for him, it’s all too real for Crooks. This is something that’s been an everyday experience for him. Down the line in their conversation, Crooks reveals, “Maybe you can see now. You got George. You know he’s goin’ to come back. S’pose you didn’t have nobody. S’pose you couldn’t go into the bunkhouse and play rummy ‘cause you was black.” (pg. 72). Crooks is known as a man who keeps to himself. Some might even go as far as to describe him as cold and rude at times. In reality, this small part of the conversation gives us insight on who Crooks really is. He’s simply a lonely man who hides his pain behind a rough exterior. His loneliness causes him to act out as this tough guy who has everything he needs in himself. This is far from the truth.
