In the Bible, the first thing God says is not good is loneliness; however, people are often excluded despite the negative effect on one’s emotional state. For many years, authors of many types of literary work have pointed out the effects of exclusion on people. For example, both Steinbeck and Anaya make the reader aware of how society isolates individuals for many reasons that cannot be controlled; using Crooks and Antonio, they show the effects of racism and differences of lifestyle on the ways people interact.
To begin, in Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, Crooks suffers from isolation on the farm. Although some of his feelings of loneliness are due to his own internal defenses, much of it is caused by society’s views of the time. Crooks, an African-American man who tends to the horses, constantly feels excluded. Much of this is due to

At school, Antonio feels an overwhelming sense of exclusion due to cultural and racial differences. He does not speak English, eats different foods that are unique to his culture, and feels like none of the other kids like him. Antonio describes sadly, “She had sent me to this place where I was an outcast… The pain and sadness seemed to spread to my soul, and I felt for the first time what grown-ups call, la tristesa de la vida. I wanted to run away, to hide, to run and never come back, never see anyone again.” This is not the only time that Antonio feels excluded. Even within his own family, Antonio feels separated from his brothers. This is likely caused by the fact that he is so much younger than they are, and that they have been gone for a long time. They see Antonio differently from them, and when talking about leaving their parents, say, “and they still have Tony. Tony will be her priest.” As his brothers leave again, Antonio comments on the empty feeling inside him, and wonders if they will always be lost to
Antonio ponders whether there is a god and considers the ideas of spin and salvation. Rudolfo Anaya (1994) noticed that, “Ay, how true,” my mother said and clutched me tightly, “and what a sin it is for a boy to grow into a man” (Rodolfo Anaya, 1994, p.31). This supports the idea that Antonio's mother wants him to become a priest because his mother is a devout Catholic woman and wants his son to be saved by the gods of the religion. In chapter Catorce, it talks about how Anthony lost his innocence and approach to maturity. According to the author, Rodolfo Anaya, “And I remember my dream, and said that he would not enter the house of a naked woman, until I lost my innocence” (Rodolfo Anaya, 1994, p.31).
Growing up, Florence did not have what most children had. He in fact grew up without his mother and father. He always mentioned that he did not believe in God based on the fact that his parent both died. He thought how could God take a child 's parents from them so young. Despite the fact that Tony was a massive believer in God, he still proceeded to be friends with Florence. One day, Florence was swimming in Blue Lake, he made his way to the back of the Lake. Kids were not allowed to be in this area but for some reason he went anyways. He was with a few boys from school and they noticed he had not came up in a while. When his body came a float, they noticed his arm had barbed wire so he must have been held down. Cico and Tony arrived to see the Golden carp but got unexpected news that their friend
Antonio’s relationships with others, the events that he experiences, and his natural curiosity for the world and religion all lead to the conflicting beliefs and questions of morality that he develops throughout the story.
Unfortunately, the people furthest away from Antonio only increased the pressure on his shoulders. Antonio had a deep admiration for all three of his brothers that went off to war.Since his brothers were gone for so long, they are portrayed as distant characters that were always so far away
In the same dream, Tony admits to doubting God. And then sees his three brothers being whipped by the Trementina sisters. His brothers have asked for forgiveness for their sins, and this is when Tony admits he has doubted God, by saying, “...I am not a priest... I too have sinned! I have doubted the Lord!”
Antonio, who has begun to discover the importance of independence, must use this to his mother, who has her own vision of his future. The fact that he holds this value signifies growth in Tony’s character, and his continuing development into a man.
“I yearned for knowledge and understanding” (Anaya, 74). Antonio always wants to learn and is always inquiring into how the world works, and all the mysteries of the universe. “‘I am beginning to understand why your mother calls you the inquisitor,’ she said.” (Anaya, 33). Antonio’s mother recognizes his investigative nature so much that she has nicknamed him after this trait.
The point of having familial and inner tension within Antonio and Maggie was so that they’re able to use that tension and develop as a result from it. For Antonio both of his familial tension caused by his parents, and his inner tension, caused by death as well as religion, resulted in Antonio maturing as a character. Antonio being forced to either be a priest or a vaquero led to overall confusion to what or who he will be but through this confusion he made the decision upon himself that he will choose his own path and destiny. Antonio decided to make and follow his own dreams, he stood up for himself. Although it may be unclear what exactly Antonio ends up becoming, the reader can assume that Antonio became a writer due to his love of learning.
He feels a great sense of betrayal of his Mexican past. His connection that held him so close to his family is destabilized.
In “Bless Me Ultima” Antonio son of Maria Luna who is a religious woman and wants Tony to become a priest when he grows up and Gabriel Márez a former vaquero (Cowboy) who’s dream is to move to California with his family and work the farms. Since Tony is the only son in the house since his other three brothers Leon, Andrew and Eugene
Human can feel the different emotion. When people read the different book, book can take the different emotion to them. John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men about two man, George and Lennie, they are the good friends, they get the dream, then they go to a farm try to achieve their dream. In the farm they are different with other people, because other people are all alone, they don’t have any friends. Later, Lennie get the accident and they fix the problem, but George and Lennie’s dream are shatter.
Crooks to Lennie, “There wasn’t another colored family for miles around. And now there ain’t a colored man on this ranch an’ there’s jus’ one family in Soledad.” (Steinbeck 69) Crooks was born in America, but he is still treated like a slave. He is the only African American man on the ranch. Plus, he lives all alone and can’t hang in the other men's cabins.
Anne Hathaway once said, “Loneliness is my least favorite thing about life. The thing I’m most worried about is just being alone without anybody to care for or someone to care for me.” The central theme in the novel Of Mice and Men, written during the Great Depression by John Steinbeck, is loneliness. In this essay I will talk about how the characters George, Lennie, and Crooks were impacted by loneliness.
Many people live lonely and isolated lives. People who live lonely lives often begin to get comfortable with being lonely and like to be by themselves. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, expresses how many people live lonely, isolated lives. Through three main characters, Candy, Curley's wife, and Crooks. John Steinbeck shows the effect that loneliness has on people.
Loneliness is something you don't want in you life. But this is a very sad story because a lot of the people are lonely. They have hard lifes. But thesis are some of the people that are lonely in this story. One person that is lonely in this story is Crooks.
