Loneliness In Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

In the Bible, the first thing God says is not good is loneliness; however, people are often excluded despite the negative effect on one’s emotional state. For many years, authors of many types of literary work have pointed out the effects of exclusion on people. For example, both Steinbeck and Anaya make the reader aware of how society isolates individuals for many reasons that cannot be controlled; using Crooks and Antonio, they show the effects of racism and differences of lifestyle on the ways people interact.
To begin, in Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, Crooks suffers from isolation on the farm. Although some of his feelings of loneliness are due to his own internal defenses, much of it is caused by society’s views of the time. At school, Antonio feels an overwhelming sense of exclusion due to cultural and racial differences. He does not speak English, eats different foods that are unique to his culture, and feels like none of the other kids like him. Antonio describes sadly, “She had sent me to this place where I was an outcast… The pain and sadness seemed to spread to my soul, and I felt for the first time what grown-ups call, la tristesa de la vida. I wanted to run away, to hide, to run and never come back, never see anyone again.” This is not the only time that Antonio feels excluded. Even within his own family, Antonio feels separated from his brothers. This is likely caused by the fact that he is so much younger than they are, and that they have been gone for a long time. They see Antonio differently from them, and when talking about leaving their parents, say, “and they still have Tony. Tony will be her priest.” As his brothers leave again, Antonio comments on the empty feeling inside him, and wonders if they will always be lost to
