Micaela Rocha Mr. Gutierrez ENGL 1301 October 25 , 2016 Is long form a bad form? “When ‘Long-Form’ Is Bad Form” an op-ed article by the New York Times . It discusses how the people in the modern days don’t really read the ‘ long-forms’ because it may mean that there is to many words. People that use and read long forms still do it online on the apps since its easier and more simple. This article mentions that the long forms are for the writers to delve into the true complexeties of the story and to encourage the readers to get closer to the experience of other people around. The long forms are for people to write about anything as long as it enables the readers to experience the subject as humans not as objects of curiosity.
While we have gained many abilities with the invention of writing we have also lost some. We have lost the telling of oral stories and the embellishments that came with them. Losing the enjoyment of never really knowing how the story would end, making them predictable and somehow bland.
In Rebel, by Willo Davis Roberts, the two main characters Rebel and Moses have specific similar and different characteristics. Rebel and Moses are both clever and intelligent as well as adventurous. However, Rebel is a leader and perseveres whereas Moses is afraid of the consequences and tries to be innocent and sincere. On page 80, the author states that, “‘It’s time we turned detective... Why did somebody break in and only steal a video camera?’...
My teacher always taught us to use “big words” which meant using more profound words with similar meanings. For instance, replacing the word bad with unpleasant would be a better way to deeply explain my topic or viewpoint. When it came to writing an introduction to a short story I had a very different approach. After school I would love to go home and read books about teenagers who struggled with peer-pressure, self-affliction, and abuse. These books inspired
Kantz says that “writing and reading are not just about transmitting and receiving information. Texts don’t mean the same thing to every reader” because readers will construct the meaning by interacting with texts. Writing synthesis can be very difficult because writer need to think about the required materials such as citation format, number and length of the sources, abstractness of the topic, and the extent to which the sources will supply the purpose of the paper. It is easier to write a paper that uses all of only one short source on familiar topic than writing long sources on topic that writer must learn and unfamiliar. In addition to understand reading text as stories is to teach the concept of rhetorical situation, it offers insight into the nature of students representations of writing task in rich and set up complex goal structures and allows students to work

The two most important factors responsible for fueling the movement toward drug regulations in the 20th century were that patent medicines were abused and the associated drug use with minority groups (Levinthal, 2012). With little or no restrictions on drugs by any government agency, patent medicines had a broad definition and were distributed in various ways. Interestingly, the medicines were a far cry from today's medicines as there were no restrictions that required all of the ingredients to be listed on the container the medicine was distributed in. Furthermore, a popular trait was the traveling medicine show that included a "pitch man", whose responsibility was sale his patent medicines (Levinthal, 2012). As the traveling medicine shows became more popular and more drugs were sold, the number of drug-dependent Americans grew and resulted in the establishment of the Pure Drug and Trade Act of 1906, of which made it a requirement to list ingredients on all medicines distributed (McBride, VanderWaal, & Terrry-McElrath, 2002).
Modern teens tend to use shortened texts, to communicate and get to the point as fast as possible. Looking at all the short stories given, teens would approach and choose the shorter text to read. The reason is, that the teens are used to seeing short paragraphs, and try to put all the ideas into a small simple text. If the text is too long, the teenage brain will start to wonder around, because it does not grab their attention. The longer the text, the more boring it gets. When seeing a 55 word story, teens will take the 50 seconds to read it. If modern teenagers are told to pick a short story, the shorter one would most likely be their first option.
Imperialism affected many African colonies in both positive and negative ways. Two major colonies that were affected, Korea and the Congo, are currently still suffering, as well as improving from the effects of imperialism. Imperialism is when a nation wants to get control of foreign lands to increase the nation's power or for more resources. Japan wanted to get land from Korea and Belgium wanted to get control of the land of the Congo. They colonies took extreme measures to get what they wanted and there were positive and negative outcomes from this.
The author’s use of imagery and line breaks builds tension and anticipation. It contributes to evoking emotions and engaging the reader.
Do short stories change the way people think, or are they just words on a page? Writes Sebastian Steininger
The short story consists of both short sentences and long sentences. The sentences are short when something dramatic happens and the short sentences make it more dramatic and interesting to read
For this assignment I decided to compare and contrast two short stories, “The story of an hour” written by Kate Chopin and “A good man is hard to find” written by Flannery O’ Connor. Both stories were written by amazing writers who provide a unique style of writing, characters and narration. In the “Story of an hour” Chopin employs specific structural and stylist techniques to exaggerate the drama of the hour. The story is told in different small paragraphs making it easier to read and comprehend. Since the story is considered a short story the structure of the story is made up of short paragraphs, many which only consist of two or three sentences.
There are different forms of literature which can include essays, poems, novels, reports and more. The one thing all forms of literature have in common is that they all have meaning, purpose and form, but how it is expressed is all different, the question is how. Most of the times authors have a reason to convey such messages, and how the messages are delivered is up to the author as well. The author uses the form, it’s aesthetics to send the readers an image; what kind of literature it is. The authors also send the readers a blatant message, the message is sent through the text of the literature. Through the text on the literature the author portrays purpose, and with the form of the
As a result, it becomes much more difficult to sustain focus on reading prose that is long and takes more effort to absorb.
The short story is a concise form of narrative prose that is usually simpler and more direct compared to longer works of fiction such as novels. Therefore, because of their short length, short stories rely on many forms of literary devices to convey the idea of a uniform theme seen throughout the script. This theme is illustrated by using characteristics that are developed throughout the story such as, plot, setting and characters. The three main components are developed throughout the story in order to guide the reader to the underlying theme, which is necessary as a short story lacking a theme also lacks meaning or purpose.
