What is long QT syndrome

Long QT syndrome or LQTS, is a heart rhythm condition that has the potential to cause fast, chaotic heartbeats. These accelerated heartbeats might give rise to abrupt dizzy and fainting spells as well as seizures. In some cases, the heart can beat eccentrically for so long that it causes sudden death. One can be born with a genetic transmutation that puts you at risk of long QT syndrome. In addition to that, certain medications and health conditions might induce long QT.

Causes

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is a heart rhythm condition that can potentially cause fast, chaotic heartbeats. These rapid heartbeats might trigger a sudden fainting spell or seizure. In some cases, the heart can beat erratically for so long that it causes sudden death. The condition is treatable however the patient may need to take precautions in order to avoid an irregular heart beat the form of medication. Sometimes surgery or implantable devices have to be involved as part of a treatment plan. The patient will have to avoid medications known to cause the condition or provoke symptoms and some physical activities will have to be neglected.

Unless an EKG reading is done as part of a regular checkup and something out of the ordinary is found, one may never know. If it runs in your family, you may find out by way of hereditary testing. For people who experience long QT, the most common symptoms include fainting, seizures and sudden death. Signs of hereditary long QT can be detected during the first weeks or months after birth. Some people find out later in life or sometimes never at all.
