Bullying is a problem in today’s society that occurs regularly among youth. It should be addressed because of the negative impact it has on the victim. It can change their life and change the way they act towards other people. I am against bullying, so therefore, in this essay, I will discuss the effects it has on people in terms of long-term effects, mental health, and suicide.
To start off, when someone is going through a phase of bullying, there is usually long-term effects that come along with it. Depression is one of the long-term effects the victim suffers. As Bullying Statistics stated, “Both bullies and their victims are more likely to suffer from depression than youth who are involved in bullying. This connection can be long-lasting;

When someone has depression it’s usually difficult for them to concentrate, changes in their sleep and weight, and they feel like they are not worth anything. In addition, anxiety disorder is also a long-term effect for the victims. WebMD explained, “it can cause such distress that it interferes with a person's ability to lead a normal life. They also experience unrealistic worry and tension.” For example, something can be going on and they’re worrying way too much about it when it isn’t necessary. Anxiety disorder is “caused by changes in the brain and environmental stress,” WebMD stated. When victims are bullied, they seem to be more anxious than students who are not bullied at all. An example Swearer gave was, “boys 14-18 years of age who were being bullied by being called “gay” showed higher levels of anxiety than their peers who were bullied for another reason.” Also, being called gay seemed to be one of the most common reasons for this disorder. Every victim has their own situation that leads them to this disorder however, some are more serious than others. The third long-term effect that …show more content…
Psychological problems is one of the effects. When a victim is going through this, their risk of having suicidal thoughts and behaviors is higher than usual.Walton says, “But a new study in JAMA Psychiatry looks at the long-term psychological effects of bullying, for kids who are bullied, who bully, or who may play both “roles”. Kids who had been victims only (who never bullied others) had greater risk for depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, generalized anxiety, panic disorder and agoraphobia as adults. But worse off were kids who were both bully victims and bullies – they experienced all types of depressive and anxiety disorders, and suffered most severely from suicidal thoughts, depressive disorders, generalized anxiety and panic disorder, compared with the other groups of participants. In fact, about 25% of these participants said they had suicidal thoughts as young adults, and about 38% had panic disorder.” This is important because it shows that people who are victims and bully others are the ones that go through a lot more. They want to feel like they finally have control over someone, since they have been bullied before. Another mental health is low-self esteem. Children that have low-self esteem are the ones that usually get picked on at school. They don’t feel positive and don’t see themselves as worthy or good enough for others. The last mental health is post traumatic stress. It’s
After bullying, most people are changed in ways that may last for a very long time, in ways that can hurt, in ways that can rip apart their life. Bullied individuals often have higher risk of many mental illnesses. They are four times as likely to develop an anxiety disorder in adulthood compared with kids who were uninvolved in bullying. And the victims had a five-times greater risk of depression than uninvolved kids, as well as 10 times the likelihood of suicidal thoughts or actions and 15 times the likelihood of developing a panic disorder. All this was found in one 20 year study published in 2013.
They are also scared to tell people because they will feel powerless or weak. Over a span of time, the victim feels so down about themselves and feel they deserve to be bullied. One major negative effect of bullying is low performance in school. They feel no motivation for anything, and school is probably the last thing they are worried about. They will most likely to skip school or fail tests. Another major effect of bullying is depression. Sleeping patterns will change and sadness will increase. You will notice the change in motivation to do activities with friends or play sports. In most extreme cases, self-harm is a result. In a study from Bullying Statistics, according to the CDC, Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year and for every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. People need to understand no matter how bad any situation is, nothing is bad enough in which they have to take their own
Bullying takes a huge toll on you and can affect you for the rest of your life. Your parents condition you to think a certain way about others. Students at Reardan and Wellpinit ridiculed Junior because he wasn’t like the other kids. Mental health issues drastically increase due to being the victim of bullying; these include depression, anxiety, or aggravation. Everybody has their different ways to cope with bullying.
Children and young adults that are bullied in this way could be affected in different ways. They may blame themselves. They may also suffer from depression. They could inflict harm to themselves. They may feel ill or start developing phobias. Children who suffer from this type of bullying may be extremely shy and lack confidence. They may also develop mental health problems. They might also find comfort in overeating. They may not want to go to school and may also be withdrawn and isolated.
The result of this is many people feeling depressed and worthless, believing that nothing good will ever happen in their lives. Sometimes these feeling of worthlessness may even lead to suicide for those who are bullied. Bullying causes death, depression, anger, hatred, fear, and health issues. Additionally, bullies may lack friends, have anger issues, have problems at home, or do badly in school. Bullying others can lead to those being bullied to become bullies of others, leading to further problems.
What Goes Around Comes Around In Carrie, Stephen King writes about a young teenage girl named Carietta White. Carrie is teased and bullied throughout her life by her peers, but what they do not know is that she has a gift. The gift she has is telekinesis. According to the novel, telekinesis is
Bullying is said to be a major influence in “incidents of school violence” ( “School Bullying” 2). Bullying early in someone’s life is related to later issues such as suic ide intentions, anxiety, self-esteem, and other conditions that can last into their adulthood. But the victims are not the only ones affected. Bullies have increased health problems and have a hard tim e with relationships. They are more likely to commit crimes at a younger age.
Bullying can lead to feelings of hopelessness, loneliness and result in suicidal thoughts. Bullying also increases the chance of suffering from anxiety or
These victims suffer bullying in different ways: they can be attacked physically (even going as far as being sexually assaulted), they can be psychologically bullied (for example, gossiping about them or excluding them from everything). Usually, psychological bullying is tied up with verbal bullying, and verbal bullying is usually related with cyberbullying as well. However, these are the “external” ways that the victims suffer. On the “internal” ways, their physical and mental health becomes progressively worse, their grades decline, they have trouble focusing, they may be afraid of going to school. The victims of bullying are also prone to have anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, stress, low self-esteem, cut themselves, etc.
Bullying is an undesirable, antagonistic conduct among not only school aged children but also adults. People who are bullied may have serious and long-term problems. Bullying has become more prominent throughout the years, increasing the suicide rate in the U.S. to 24.5% since 2003. (Hey U.G.L.Y, 2006) This results in approximately 160,000 individuals stay home from school or work each day because they are afraid or feel threatened by bullies. (Hey U.G.L.Y, 2006) Approximately 4,400 lives are lost each year due to bullying. (Hey U.G.L.Y, 2006) A nationwide survey was done throughout public schools and private schools in 2014 to find out how many students actually considered suicide due to bullying. (Hey U.G.L.Y, 2006) 15% of students reported
Bullying may result in death, physical injury, social and emotional distress. Bullied students are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, poor school adjustment, and sleep difficulty.
Do something, that is all it takes to save a child from others and themselves. Bullying has a negative impact on children's mental health that can continue into their adult life. Victims of bullying are at a higher chance of developing anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. This is only to name a few of the very serious mental health problems that are plaguing the minds of those who are to lead the world. Although being bullied in childhood affects adolescents’ mental health, there are many of different organizations that seek to help children stop the bullying before it leaves a permanent mental imprint on them.
Children who are bullied may have short term effects on them. They often do not like to go to school, have problems making friends, and in extreme cases develop depression can lead to suicide. Bullying can have lasting effects on a victim. Fortunately, most who are bullied receive support from others tend not to have any lasting effect.
(Hinduja & Patchin, n.d.) Serious effects can come from Depression and can take a toll on a young person’s life. Bullying and depression can also causes other issues, like Anxiety, absenteeism, physical illness and low self-esteem just to name a few.
Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences for the bully.
