Longer School Day Analysis

A lot of parents are shaking their heads at the consideration of a four-day school week, and a longer school day. Shorter school weeks or longer school days are reasonable solutions when there is a shortage of funding, or possible budget cuts coming to the school district. This solution has many mixed opinions from parents, teachers and school board members.

Four Day School Act is beneficial for students attending middle school through twelfth grade along with school faculty. This program is important for students who lose focus and began being disengaged in classes towards the weekend giving them enough time to recuperate an extra day. The other option is to cut Monday as well since it is the beginning of the week where students to also be less engaged. The possible outcome effect is less absences, higher test scores, and less yelling from teachers to stay on task. While students are out on Thursday, that leaves Friday for school faculty to prepare for the following week. Teachers can accomplish various things even schedule meetings on a Monday or a Friday.

Both longer school days and regular (6.5 - 7 hour) school days have benefits and disadvantages. The Readworks article “Time To Think” discusses both pro’s and con’s about both sides of the argument. Such as, longer school days can cut into after school activities like sports and family time. With regular school days teachers might argue they don’t have enough time to teach students the lesson. While comparing both sides of the argument it appeared that longer school days and regular school days both have the kids’ interests in mind and either way the students will still have a good education.

This would allow the instructor to better connect with his or her pupils. Also, according to the Columbia Journalism School’s Teacher Project, some of the schools who have switched “ have seen marginal increases in standardized test scores.” This is yet another piece of evidence to suggest that the four-day school week provides more adequate academic performance for our ever evolving world. Additionally, another eyewitness testimony by the Superintendent of the Lathrop school district Miami R-1 from Missouri stated “ Our ACT scores are the best they’ve been in 10 years, and our teachers love it.” Once again, the four-day school week has proven its’ ability to conduct education for young adults in an effective manner. This same Superintendent also announced that a community poll conducted approximately half way through the first year showed that 70% of the parents supported the four-day schedule. This poll helps to show that it appears that the majority of the community in small, rural districts such as Miami R-1 or even perhaps Colby where childcare is not an issue would benefit greatly from the four-day school schedule. I think the four day week will help out a lot. Most of all they will be fewer days you have to come to school. Most of all the students favor this idea of the four day week and a three day weekend. The kids get less burned out because of the four days instead of the five days and only have two days to sit back and chill and rest. The pros of four-day school are good for saving districts money. The one day off saving money on the service they pay to help the student such as transportation. The four day school week improve student and teacher attendance. On the extra day off they could schedule dentist appoint it and other appointments that need to be done, This means fewer substitute teachers. A teacher with the day off come back to school refresh and focus on the week. On the day of student and teacher can spend time with their families. They could go to a museum or go hiking and bond together.

Though some people say that four days in a school week will help students in certain classes especially in math, this test only worked on 4th and 5th graders. So it is illogical to think that a four day week will help other grade levels. My main concern is that most kids will not be able to focus by the end of the day because the school days will be longer,and so there would be no point in trying to teach at the end of the day. Only having a four day school week would give the students an extra day for the weekend. This extra day would give the students more of a childhood. The students, teachers, and even the staff would get more time to go and explore more things in and even outside their city. Students would have more quality time with their family and could bond more. Giving them the extra day off could also help the students with sports, arts, or hobbies by giving them more time

That unscheduled day can provide them time to get a tutor, and that improves their scores drastically, proving that help from outside of school can help students and their grades. Schools are so much a part of our society, so the accurate length of school days is extremely important. Public opinions on the length of the school days are different. There are a lot of parents and professors concerned that it is hard for children to go to school early in the morning and stay there the whole day. On the other side, some professors try to force students into a nine hour school day. Not so many years ago, school was a main part of my life, and the school days’ structure and length affected my social life and ability to study. From my own experience and some studies that I have seen, students benefit if school days are long.

I think students should not have an 8 hour school day. Most kids do not want to go to school longer than 8 hours. On debate.org a poll named “Should School Days be Shorter” show me that 89% of students said yes and 11% said no. My first reason is that “Students would get home much faster and they’ll have more time for homework and other activities after school.”Also, having a shorter school day would get students to have enough sleep and be energized the next day. My second reason is that the school district will save money and this is a quote from education.seattlepi.com. My third reason is that teachers would work fewer hours and therefore, would get less pay.” So I believe having a shorter school day could benefit the school district to save money and use it for field trips and sports. Students and the school district can be successful with a shorter school day.
