Taylor Swift dropped a dramatic revenge filled music video on the 27th of August for the song, “Look What You Made Me Do”. The music video displays her retaliation against the past celebs that have wronged her in the past. She seems to have conflict with an abundance of people, but I am going to ignore that and sip on some tea. There are several events that Swift addresses in this video. For example, her dispute with Katy Perry. Before this song, Katy Perry released the song “Swish Swish,” which was a diss toward Swift. In response to that song, Swift is seen in her music video dressed as a look alike Katy Perry while holding a grammy award, which Perry had never won. It is a very interesting and symbolic music. For instance, she laid in
The lyrics can make one happy, confused, or relate to Swift’s situation. This appeal to pathos is used in different ways here. Whenever one sees the scene with Swift holding the cat, it forces them to emote and feel terrible or sad for the cat because it is adorable and by extension for the person holding it. Also, Swift sums up all that has been said about her in one climatic boy crazy video. The video’s setting resembles that of a fairy tale where all is well, but then Swift goes into a fit of anger after her supposed one true love hurts her. Throughout her video, she tries to tell young women that boys are dumb and can break their hearts to the point that they go crazy after a breakup and that is okay as long as they do not go
Taylor Swift, a pop icon and polarizing figure, is often known for her empowering music, feminist attitude, and meaningful lyrics. Many of her fans praise the feminist messages some of her songs deliver, however others say she comes from a position of privilege and only advocates for white women. Still, a common perception of Swift is that she has evolved from an innocent country singer into a more controversial and sometimes provocative pop singer. What is ignored though, is that despite this perception, themes depicted in “old” Taylor’s music still displayed highly problematic concepts about gender, just in less obvious ways. Particularly in her music video for “You Belong With Me,” the audience if presented with a fulfilling love story involving a nerdy girl getting the popular. On its surface, this concept may seem normal, but the narrative of this video unintentionally conveys significant gender issues in today’s society. Thus, through her 2008 music video for “You Belong With Me,” Taylor Swift ironically presents herself as the ideal nerdy girl next door who gets the guy when she suddenly turns beautiful while demonizing a cheerleader, revealing problematic notions of how women are supposed to look and behave in society, as well as reinforcing negative female stereotypes.
In the song ‘Blank Space’ by Taylor Swift it talks about the media's perception of a person and how they can manipulate it and turn it into something else. In the song Taylor plea’s when she say’s” I can make all the tables turn rose garden filled with thorns keep you guessing like “oh my god, who is she?” implying that with her façade she can manipulate people. An example of satire she used in her song was “Love's a game, wanna play?” showing humor in what love has become to or what it can turn into. In the end money and fame can make you or break you emotionally and socially.
Along with Taylor Swift saying this will be a new her, she is also referencing multiple other celebrities throughout the music video. Some say that when she is lying in a bathtub full of diamond jewelry she is making fun of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West when they had been robbed. Kim and Kanye were robbed in Paris while being at gunpoint. She also referenced Katy Perry multiple times. Including, when she crashed her car into a light post and had the exact same hair and an outfit style as Katy Perry would have. Which is Taylor is making fun of Katy saying that she is a drama queen and needs the attention of the paparazzi. She also references Katy by showing her walking a cheetah on a leash and Katy Perry is known for cheetah print and exotic things. Another person Taylor shows reference to be Tom Hiddleston with the black crop top t-shirts saying “I Love Taylor Swift” which is significant because Tom and Taylor dated for about three months, but Taylor broke it off because Tom wanted to go public and Taylor knew what
Recently, 24- year old country singer/popstar Taylor Swift released a music video “Shake it Off” which was I sort of introduction to her newest album 1989. The video received some backlash for it was seen by many as offensive, and stereotypical to African American Culture. In the video Swift dresses in what some may consider Hip Hop attire, attempts to “twerk” and even has a section where she partially sings as well as raps. She even uses talks about
Swift delivers this song with a vocal style that evokes her anger. Her version effectively conveys her raw emotions of frustration, regret, and betrayal. She conveys these emotions through her dynamic range and her aggressive phrasing.
On November 10, 2017, Taylor Swift earned her title as a legend; she is indisputably now the most changed artist who has not for a second, skipped a beat in her praise and decoration. Taylor has sung for everyone, from her early country roots, moving to her pop hits, and now Taylor has made the full circle of an artist, Taylor is singing for herself and my goodness, it can be agreed that if everything up to this point has been “old Taylor,” I don’t think the world can wait soon enough to explore Taylor’s true character authenticity. Throughout Taylor’s career, and as her story is not yet completely told, many twists have happened, evident in her music, and life as an artist, it is now, we are able to not only know, but experience, the legend that is [the new] Taylor Swift. Works Cited Acuna, Kirsten. “Everything you need to know about the bad blood between Taylor Swift and Kanye West” Insider.
Or perhaps the real artist, Taylor Swift’s purpose is to show the audience how ridiculous is the media image that has been created on her. It is a warning for both boys and girls, primarily those who are hoping to attract love from boys that love is perpetuated by its tortuousness. It is painful if boys will lose interest, that is Swift’s warning. The song revolves around a message for girls: do not be a daydream dressed like a daydream; do not be a nightmare dressed like a nightmare; do not find out what kind of a girl he wants and be like that forever, do not be heaven, do not be nice, do not be magic, never be too plain or perfect and good. You can also add torture to love and bring darkness to light, it is all about the
In Joseph Kahn's music video for Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), the music video embraces the idea that the artist Taylor Swift is exactly as she is negatively stereotyped in the media. Through the use of iconography and hegemony that displays the artist as unstable, the director is able to present Taylor Swift in a negative light with the purpose of presenting a parody of the music icon that is Taylor Swift. Overall the ideology presented in the music video presents the idea that Taylor Swift is self-aware of her self-destructive nature when it comes to relationships or what might be more accurate she is self-aware of the nature of the persona she utilizes to write and sell music. The music video utilizes shots wealth, power, and prestige.
The “plugging” aspect of Taylor Swift is her world known breaking hearts, seeking vengefulness personality. Plugging benefits Taylor Swift’s music because people try to decode her songs and figure out who it is she is throwing shade to. In “Look What You Made Me Do” listeners were able to identify right away that her first verse was about Kanye West which states, “I don’t like your little games, don’t like your tilted stage” (billboard 2017). People knew West had a tilted stage at his most recent tour, and the on-going Swift-West feud only helped her gain popularity to this song. Adorno would argue that plugging is all an “illusion” to the song’s success, making people believe that is what is popular and likable and therefore people believe that they like it (Adorno, “A Social”…215)..
Thesis statement: Taylor Swift is one of the most successful female artists in the world who portrays her personal experiences through her music.
In musical superstar Taylor Swift’s music video for her song “Blank Space,” she is portraying herself as the high maintenance and dramatic girlfriend that the media believes she is. The speaker of this text is the media’s perception of Taylor Swift and her message is about the disconnect between who Swift really is and who the media sees her as. I believe Swift has two purposes for this music video. One is for her character in the music video to warn her audience about the type of love that boys want, and the other for real life Taylor herself to poke holes into the media’s concept of her love life. The video is filled with satire and paradoxes to convince us that our idea of Taylor Swift is not an accurate opinion of her.
Taylor Swift’s “ Shake it off ” represents the importance of self confidence in one’s life. In this song, the message being portrayed is that sometimes in life, people are going to put you down or find flaws in you. However this song is telling the public that what other people say about you that insults or discourages you is not important, we should focus on our talents and not our faults. We are being told to pick ourselves back up when people try to put us down and “shake it off.” Many people had bullied Taylor Swift in school and always made her un confident , this song is her way of telling the world that having self confidence is important.
Katy Perry, a well-known American pop artist, delivers a message of social awareness in her song and music video titled,“Chained to the Rhythm.” In “Chained to the Rhythm,” the singer asserts that people in American society should not isolate themselves from, and or ignore the problems in the community. Perry encourages her audience to not sit still when an issue arises. Inspiring her onlookers to not stand idly while social injustices occur and to bring about change is the main purpose of her song and music video. Perry uses a plethora of rhetorical devices and appeals between her song and music video to successfully present her message and to get her audience to start making a change.
For my Taylor Swift assignment, I took very detailed notes on the music video to try and help me get a good idea of exactly what was going on. I then decided to have my main focus on the dark spots on Taylor Swifts career. I decided to focus on these because most of the music video focused in on her past and how it has changed her to be a new person. In the video, there was also reference to taboos which I explained in my writing. I was very confident on this paper and decided not to revise for that reason.
